ABSTRACT
Enhancing employment opportunities for people with disabilities is one of the main concerns of
the disability sector in India. For disabled people to have better and more realistic opportunities
for progressing into further or higher education or gaining access to progressive employment
opportunities, their experience of primary and secondary education and the level to which they
are supported can have a significant impact on their future prospects. There is increased
awareness amongst Corporates and people with disabilities. There has been pressure on the
Government to implement The Disability Act, 1995. Even though there was no law mandating
the private sector to employ disabled people, some companies have taken proactive measures to
employ disabled people. There is a wide gap between the employment rate of people with and
without disabilities in the country.
Most NGOs have vocational/placement units, which train and employ people in various jobs.
Studies have shown that trainings provided in most NGOs do not match the needs of the industry
and they do not have good training faculty, due to lack of resources. There are a few
organizations that have come up more recently, which are working exclusively in promoting
employment of disabled people. There is also little awareness about the fact that the disabled can
work efficiently in a variety of functions with the help of simple technology and other assistive
aids.
This brief project undertaken by me will assist the organization, EnAble India which is an
organization focused on empowering disabled people and helping them gain employment.
EnAble India trains and counsels persons with disability and prepares them to join the
mainstream workforce as confident individuals. They are linking up with companies and placing
disabled people. They work based on companys need. They are training disabled people and
placing them in jobs. Organizations in the private and public sector, barring a few, are unaware
that persons with disability too possess the talent and commitment to be part of a productive
workforce. EnAble India works towards making people with disabilities a part of every corporate
hiring plan.
