Module 7, Lesson 2: Answer sheet
Q16) What was the very largest diameter of the eye of Hurricane Mitch?
_____18.5 miles_____________________
Q17) What was the very largest diameter of Hurricane Mitch?
780 miles
Q18) What changes in size, location, and cloud cover did you see in the
storm as it made landfall?
It got smaller the longer it was on land. It moved south
rapidly once it got to land. In the ocean there was almost no
space in between any clouds but as time went on the clouds
appeared to disperse.
__Its concentrated around the eye of the storm, but also lots of rain
outside the storm by Nicaragua and El Salvadors
coast_______________________________________________________________
_
Q20) Is this a pattern you expected to find? Why or why not?
_____I was surprised at the large amount of rain outside of the eye
because that is where things are most violent
typically.____________________________________________________________
____
Q21) What is the highest range of rainfall in the Rain4 layer?
______2429_______________________________________________________________
Q22) Which country received the majority of this heavy rain?
_____Nicaragua_____________________________________________________
___________
Q23) Describe the difference between the rainfall patterns on October 30
(Rain4 layer) and October 31 (Rain5 layer).
_Rain was a lot more spread out in the rain 4 layer. In the Rain5
layer it was much more bunched in a couple areas rather than
spread out. The storm also moved Southwest.
Q24) Estimated Damage Assessment: Look over the data you have
collected and assess where you think most of the damage occurred
in Central America during Hurricane Mitch. What kind of damage do
you expect to find with this type of storm? What regions will be
most affected? What aspects of the region (industrialization, land
use, transportation, etc.) will be most affected? Use the table in Q1
as a resource.
I think most of the damage took place in Honduras and Nicaragua.
The Hurricane passed more through Honduras than anywhere else
but there was also very heavy rain in Nicaragua. I believe in
Honduras the storm surge would have flooded many buildings and
could have drowned people close by. Nicaragua has many roads so I
believe the roads were very flooded. So, transportation in Nicaragua
would have been most affected. In Honduras, they have lots of
