Works on induction motor or an energy meter principle. Metallic disc is allowed to rotate between the two electromagnets. Torque produced due to interaction of flux with eddy current These relays are preferred for protection involving AC quantities. Types o Shaded pole type o Watt hour meter type o Induction cup type
SHADED POLE TYPE INDUCTION RELAY
Consists of aluminium disc and electromagnet.
Part of pole face of each pole is shaded using copper band. Shading ring- total flux splitted into two fluxes displaced in time and space EMF induced in shaded ring due to flux leads to flow of current.
WATTHOUR METER TYPE INDUCTION RELAY
Relay has double winding structure.
Consist of two magnets, one E shaped and other U shaped. E shaped magnet carries both primary and secondary winding. Flux in secondary lags primary by an angle. Due to interaction of fluxes, torque is exerted and disc rotates.
INDUCTION CUP TYPE RELAY
The stator consists of two, four or more poles.
Stator energized by relay coils. The rotor is hollow cylindrical cup type in structure. The only difference between this relay and induction motor is that the rotor core is stationary and only rotor conductor portion is free to rotate. The current and flux produced by coils displaced by . Thus resultant flux in the air gap is rotating. Eddy current is induced in the cup type rotor. Eddy current leads to flux production. The interaction of two fluxes produces torque. A control spring and the back stop carried on an arm attached to the spindle of the cup (to prevent continuous rotation)
