LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

Abstract
This qualitative case study investigates and addresses the leadership tools and factors that
effectively influence, lead and strengthen the growth of CrossPointe Church a Christian
organization in the 21st century. Additionally it also determines what strategies successful church
leaders have used to adapt to the many changes of the world today. With its base in the intrinsic
case study theory approach and the characteristics of organizational and servant leadership, this
study utilized comparison analysis and connection strategies with detailed holistic descriptions.
Development of themes, coding, triangulations, and member checking will be used in the
analysis of data gathered from face-to-face interviews, group interviews, participant
observations, questionnaires and analysis of various types of documentation. CrossPointe Church
was purposefully chosen as the determined site for this study and having as the primary source of
data from the pastor, ten leadership members, and fifteen selected current and previous church
members.
This study attempts to answer five questions: What factors describe church leadership in
the 21st century? What strategies and tools did successful leaders employ to adapt to the rapid
changes in society at CrossPointe Church while reporting growth within the community? How
the organizational leadership strategy of Cross Pointe Church seeks community growth in the 21st
century? How does the pastor at CrossPointe seek growth through the leadership team and
members of this organization? How does the leadership team perceive the importance of the
growth within their community at CrossPointe and how are they dealing with it? There are two
main parts for this study; the first focuses on determining the main factors that describe effective
leadership in the 21st century while studying organizational leadership and the characteristics of
servant leadership. The latter focus on the success story of CrossPoint, its leadership strategies

and what has leaded this organization to growth and success in the 21st century.

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

Introduction
Changes in the world have directly impacted and influenced leadership in church
communities in the past decades. Globalization, technology, and marketing are some of the
aspects that have played a role in the growth of church. Many church organizations have
suffered a decrease in participation, forcing them to rethink what leadership tools and factors
influence the church organization to growth in the 21st century. According to Roozen, D. (2016),
American Congregations 2015: Thriving and Surviving a study from Hartford Institute for
Religion Research, less then 35% of Congregations in America have grown more than 2% in the
years of 2010 to 2015 (p.4). Earls (2016) summarize the same study in the article 7 Statistics
That Predict Church Grown with an analysis of the seven statistics that played a role in the
growth of churches in the five years, categorizing as: growing location, younger congregation,
innovative worship, lack of serious conflict, involves church members, unique identity and
specialized program (p.1-2).
Because there are so many factors that have influenced the evolution and change of
churches in the past decades, understanding organizational leadership and the characteristics of
servant leadership in these communities is essential. According to Nye (2015) in the article
Leading the 21st Century Church: Pining for the days of the early church can distract us from
leading faithfully today, he states As pastors we cannot dismiss technology or ignore the
complex questions of our day regarding nuclear weapons, Wall Street, global poverty, or science
all things the 1st century church never dealt with. We must also not shame churches that spend
money on videos, social media, or brandingall things that were not available to the 1st century
church, but can (in many ways) support and help the 21st century church reach more people
(para. 8). While there are many studies about organizational leadership in church, attendance

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

decline and suggested strategies to allow growth in church communities, this study is based on a
success story of a church community that has grown in the past decade.
Conceptual Framework
Based on the intrinsic case study theory, for this study of the nonprofit CrossPointe
Church organization, the primary concept is organizational leadership and servant leadership,
with the focus of how their organization leads to community growth while adapting to the
changes in the world.
All categories of the conceptual framework are linked and must work together as well in
parallel in order to create growth for the organization. The pastor as the main leader, his
leadership team, and the members constitutes the leadership aspect of the organization itself.
The pastor attributes and competencies as a leader are fundamental in the leadership style and
strategies he uses in order to lead this team and consequently all members. There are aspects to
be considered under each of the attributes such as character, presence, intellect and availability as
well as under the competencies such as his ability to lead, achieve the goals established, ability to
build trust, develop, create, advice, guide and influence his members and team.
The leadership team must receive constant training and develop in education. Team
buildings and meetings, are also important in developing a team that is prepared for conflict
management, counseling, nurturing and fellowship building. Because the pastor is only one
person, the leadership team plays a great role in passing forward and maintaining the common
goals in order to constantly produce and keep the growth of the organization. Members are
categorized in different groups, from children, youth, couples & adults, families, men & woman,
college and recovery adults.

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

The institution provides many programs that tackle each particular group in order to
achieve the goals. Members can also be categorized in their discipleship and level, as spiritual
infant, maturing believer, multiplying leaders and co-laborer. These are almost like ranks that are
obtained as members evolve in their Christianity developing a higher probability of adding to the
organization as a whole. Each member has attributes, which play a role in the growth of the
community such as values, beliefs, attendance, loyalty, ownership and sense of belonging. This
will be directly related to the main programs available, to the vision, mission, values and goals
shared in the organization, and the influences on the monetary fund of the organization. Some of
the influential factors that are developed by the leaders and members are the programs available.
The vision, mission, values and goals of the organization, all implicate with the congregational
governance guidance, the strategies aliened, the ministry leadership and the authenticity of the
spiritual direction. Those factors in parallel with the programs, the location and monetary fund
play a role in the church growth.
A non-profit organization such as a church bases its operation in religion, this is the focus
and the core of the organization, and however an organization does not function without good
leadership and program development, which affect the growth and expansion of the organization.
Fundraising, members buy-in, donations and investments must be clearly developed and
considered by the leaders of the organization in order to continue the commitment of the
membership. The location along with its size, culture and environment as well as technology
available also plays a role in the 21st century as it influences the growth in many directions.
Although the pastor plays a major leadership role in the organization, all characteristics of the
framework must operate together in order to lead the 21st century church to growth.

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

Proposed Research
Research Goals
The goal of this research is to study and determine the leadership tools and factors that
effectively influenced, lead and strengthen the growth of a Christian church organization in the
21st century, as well as what strategies successful church leaders have used to adapt to the many
changes of the world today. While many organizations have suffered a significant decrease in
membership, I have learned about the success story of CrossPointe Church, in Valdosta, Georgia.
For this reason I become interested in learning what has influenced this organization to grow, and
learning about their organizational leadership style, tools and strategies. In addition, I am
interested in studying the particular story of the pastor as the most significant leader figure of this
particular organization as well as the main characteristics of organizational leadership and
servant leadership he possesses.
Research Questions
The goal of any church organization is to grow in membership attendance as to continue to
expand and develops its faith and organization. Considering the big problem as determining the
leadership tools and factors that strengthen a church organization to growth in the 21st century, I
have considered the research questions below. The first research question in a broad question
that would lead me to understanding the trends and factors that directly related to effective
organizational leadership in a church organization in todays world. The second research
question is directly related to the successful story of a particular church community that has
developed and grown in the past decade in order to analyze how they have adapted to the
evolving changes of society and what leadership tools and skills have been key factors to the
success. These questions would further my understanding on the phenomena of study and

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

10

increase my understanding of organizational leadership in church communities.

Research question 1

What factors describe church leadership in the 21st century?

Research question 2

What strategies and tools did successful leaders employ to adapt to the rapid changes in
society at CrossPointe Church while reporting growth within the community?

Additional possible questions:

How the organizational leadership strategy of Cross Pointe Church seeks community

growth in the 21st century?

How does the pastor at CrossPointe seek growth through the leadership team and

members of this organization?

How does the leadership team perceive the importance of the growth within their
community at CrossPointe and how are they dealing with it?
Research Site
I plan to present the endeavor of studying the success story of CrossPointe as a

partnership project along with the pastor and the leadership team, where they could be benefit
from it. I will focus on explaining the importance of analyzing the leadership aspects of the
organization and the benefits to the organization. As a researcher, I am aware this process will
take time and I must start by having an informal conversation about my research topic and listen
to what the pastor would be comfortable with, as well as his ideas and how he could influence
the study in order to gain something back. Once that partnership is confirmed, I plan to develop
a relationship with his leadership team as well as obtaining contact information from participants
that have worked with him in the past within the organization or in his previous career to obtain
more validity. All participants will be purposefully selected. Another small sample I tend to

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

11

gather information is from is members of the church. I can randomly select them, or
purposefully select them using some criterias such as years of membership in the same church
community, gender, age group, and others. This could lead research to involve some sort of
quantitative method, which I am not sure if I would like to add to the research. Hopefully I will
be able to add members insight in a qualitative manner providing validity to the study.
I will be extremely careful and critical in analyzing the information gathered, and I
consider this will be a complex process. I understand every step must be critically thought
through and analyzed so not to affect the study of the phenomena.
Building trust and transparency is what I consider to be fundamental for the information
to be as raw and real as possible. Furthermore, it is crucial the participants understand the
purpose of the study so they can truly provide quality information. I personally do not think
status and power differences in between participants and I will play a role in this particular
environment. Nonetheless, I will be perceptive and try to always make the participants feel
comfortable and in agreement with the processes, ethical and confidential issues. I will explain
the research project, the purpose and allow them to review the material for authorization.
Furthermore while building the relationships, I will try to offer my services and time in
exchange for theirs as well. With the pastor, I will express my desire of working in this project
as partners and show the benefits this study could provide not only for myself, but also most
importantly for him and others. I will express my desire to present the findings in an
international conference extending him an invitation as a symbol of appreciation. We can
present it together and bring more audience to the success story of this particular organization.

Methods of Data Collection

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

12

Due to the nature of this study, the use of a purposeful sampling is very clear as for most
of the research questions I will be interviewing mainly the pastor, ten members of the leadership
team of CrossPointe, and fifteen current as well as previous members in order to find how each
are influenced by the leadership style of this organization and how they perceive the changes in
the 21st century as related to growth. In addition, I plan to interview experts on organization
leadership in the area of Church leadership to further validate the findings as well as past coworkers of the pastor. The methods used in this research, considering a case study, will be
various from observations of services, programs, committee meeting, to personal taped face-to
face interviews, taped open-ended group interviews, previous research, archived documents and
videos about the organization, members questionnaires, field notes, and statistical reports.
Sidemans three-interview technique will be used allowing for consistency in the collection of
data. This will provide me with data that can help me in connecting the strategies, theories, and
better understanding of the phenomena being studied. Studying this particular case, of success in
an era where church attendance has declined in many congregations, can provide great insight on
leadership skills, tools and strategies that can be useful for many.
Methods of Analysis
The qualitative data for this research will be analyzed and reviewed during the process of
this study based on the case study theory. The use of observation transcripts, audio and video
transcripts, and memos will allow for a holistic description of findings. Face-to-face interviews
with open-ended questions, group interviews and questionnaires will also be used to determine
themes and code the information. As Seidman (2013) recommended, a great way to present and
analyze interview data is by organizing it and developing categories or themes (p.127).

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

13

Furthermore, I plan the use of CAQDAS for developing consistency in data coding,
integrating memos and data, and developing the categories while connecting strategies.
Emergent themes will be followed up with additional interviews. Additional documents and
materials, as well as statistical data will allow for comparison and contrast in findings. Member
checking and triangulation will be an important and ongoing part of the process to reassure the
validity of data collected. By deep and extensive data analysis, comparison and contrast, and
strategy connection, I hope to deepen the knowledge obtained from the data gathered to better
understand the phenomena being studied and answer the research questions previous stated.
Validity Issues
In every study, validity threats exist, and research biases, as well as reactivity, are two
specific validity threats that must be addressed. Furthermore, the main idea is how the research
can rule out specific threats to the interpretation and conclusion of the phenomena being studied.
According to Maxwell (2013), validity is a fairly straightforward, commonsense way, to refer
to the correctness or credibility of a description, conclusion, explanation, interpretation, or other
sort of account (p.122). This study proposes a few validity threats such as personal biases;
Deep culture of faith might influencing on the accuracy of participants true opinion; Group
interviews might limit the full expression of self; Potential for lack of variability in feedback of
group interviews; And pastor and leadership team reactivity to researcher.
In order to warrant validity, I plan on using the following methods:

Intense review of theories, documents and expert material to assure the correct design and
methodology is being used in order to understand the phenomena being studied and

answer the research questions.

Intense and constant self-critique of personal biases.
Use of open ended script minimizing research bias

Development of ongoing relationships to better understand the culture and participants

natural and real points of view

Critical analysis of data provided by participants
Multiple face-to-face interviews with member check review and follow up questions.
Group interviews with open ended questions
Multiple observations with external member that can review recordings and provide

feedback
Participants review and authorization of data provided
Member questionnaires
Past, present and future documented experiences from participants
Triangulation of data

Ethical Issues
Patton (2002) states protection of human subjects properly insists on informed consent
(p.412). Because this is an intrinsic case study, the use of informed consent authorized by the
institutional review board will be required. In the relationships built, I plan to thoroughly
explain the purpose of the research, provide the data gathered for participants review and
consent, and develop a risk assessment. Furthermore, I will inform and maintain the
confidentiality that can be assured. One example will be the use of pseudo-names. Any
qualitative research allows for some level of risk, therefore participants that are concerned can
deny participation at any time. Nonetheless, due to the nature of this study, I do not consider
participants declining to participate bringing a significant threat to the research.
Preliminary Findings
Considering this is an ongoing study, and that it is in the early developmental stages, only
one interview has been accomplished with a member of the leadership team. For confidentiality
and ethical reasons the participants name will not be provided. Furthermore one church service

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

15

has been observed and transcribed, in addition to two videos that were also presented during the
same service. With the information gathered, I was able to identify and code some of the themes,
structure and main components of the research proposal. Additionally observations were helpful
to connect the themes and analyze the conceptual framework and help me in understanding the
connectivity and the importance of each. By developing this process, I was able to discover
emergent themes and areas which can be further developed in order to best provide the
information that would answer the research questions and fundamentally contribute to
understand the phenomena being studied.
This study seeks to determine what are the factors that have influenced the leadership of a
Christian church in the 21st century as well as what strategies successful church leaders have
used to adapt to the many changes of the world today. The findings of this study may impact
many church leaders in the community and elsewhere. Furthermore other institutions nationally
and internationally may benefit from the tools and strategies as well as leadership styles
discovered from the findings in order to develop successful leadership implementation in the 21st
century.

please be sure you have full right to stop the interview at any moment shall you feel is necessary.
You can also choose not to answer a question and you can simply inform me that you dont wish
to answer that particular question. I am hopeful that with this interview I can gain a better
insight on the leadership style and success story of CrossPointe Church. This assignment is for
class purpose only and might be shared with my instructor and class discussion only. Before I
submit this assignment, please know that this interview will be transcribed and I will provide you
with a copy for your review to make sure all is expressed as you intended to. This is our
informed consent; please let me know if you have any questions at this time.
Jason: I have no questions at this time and I understand the process and purpose of your
study.
Karin: With that said, lets begin.
Karin: How long have you been a member of CrossPointe Church? Can you provide from your
knowledge a brief history of this organization and its main focus?
Jason: Ive been a member of CrossPointe Church for almost exactly 6 years. It started
about 11 years ago in our pastors livingroom with just a few people. It grew to meet at
the Baptist Student Union on Valdosta States campus, then it moved into a warehouse in
Remerton. When it outgrew that facility, it moved to its current location on Northside
Drive. The founding pastor is still our pastor & we have launched a second campus in
Quitman a couple of years ago.
Karin: Have you always attended this particular church community? If not, how long did you
attend the previous organization and what are the factors that influenced you in stopping
attending the previous organization? (If you agree, please name the institution you attended
previous to CrossPointe).

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

20

Jason: We have not always attended CrossPointe. We attended church in Moultrie the
first year we were married, where I was a youth pastor. After leaving that position, due to
living in Valdosta and desiring to go to church in our town, we began attending Northside
Baptist Church. We stayed there for 18 months, then we moved to Crossroads Baptist,
where we served for 7 years. When we decided to leave Crossroads, we went directly to
CrossPointe and never tried any other church. We had 2 small children at the time &
didnt want to move them around from place to place, and we also knew of David
Rogers, the pastor, from when I grew up in Moultrie. I knew enough about him to trust
his heart and his character, and I knew we could trust him as our pastor as we left a
difficult situation at our previous church.
Karin: Did you try other organizations before joining CrossPointe? How many? Briefly discuss
some of the reasons why you decided that they were not of your interest. What factors influenced
your decision in choosing CrossPointe?
Jason: A church, like and other organization, is only as effective as the mission and vision
communicated by chief executive. David is a clear communicator of the mission and
vision of CrossPointe Church and summarizes the mission almost on a weekly basis
when he reminds congregants that CrossPointes mission is to Connect, Grow, Serve, and
Send. These 4 words remind us of the greater purpose that we gather together each week.
We had been involved in other churched and left our previous church where there was no
clear mission and vision of the church. Matter of fact, when I was serving in a layleadership position, I asked the senior pastor for the mission and vision of the church and
his reply was that they were implied and that such things were overrated. This lack
of effective leadership impacted all areas of the church because none of the staff or

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

21

congregants was unified around a common mission and vision. This led to other conflicts
within the different ministries within the church that I will not go into because I feel that
they would detract from the focus of this interview. But the ensuing strife made my wife
and I realize that we needed to invest our time and talent within a church that had a very
clear-cut mission and vision. CrossPointe fit the bill for us.
Karin: How long have you hold a leadership role at CrossPointe? Did you ever want to have a
leadership role in your Church organization?
Jason: I have been on leadership in some capacity for about 5 years. I started a
LifeGroup in my home within our first year at CrossPointe, and we have maintained that
for the past 5 years. Im also on the Servant Leadership Team, which helps fulfill the
vision for the church.
I did want a leadership role at CrossPointe. I have been in leadership in churches before,
and I wanted to make a difference using my personal strengths.
Karin: Can you briefly describe your role at CrossPointe organization?
Jason: As a LifeGroup leader, I am tasked with upholding and communicating the
mission and vision of CrossPointe Church to our LifeGroup members. I am tasked with
encouraging spiritual growth and formation among the members as well. I am also a
member of the Servant Leadership Team. Essentially, the servant leadership team serves
in various capacities around the church from serving communion to greeting church
attendees on Sunday mornings. We are also available for short-notice projects like when
CrossPointe served as a Red Cross shelter during Hurricane Matthew. I was able to
serve those who were forced from their homes as Matthew meandered up the East Coast
of the US.

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

22

Karin: What are the main characteristics of the organization that you have seen change in the past
years?
Jason: The church has grown a great deal. It has planted a small campus in Quitman,
testing out our vision to be a multi-site church with the same values but in different
communities. In the past few years, we have changed our missions statement from
Connect, Grow, Serve to Connect, Grow, Serve, Sendrecognizing that we dont
just need to serve here in our own churchwe need to be sending out missionaries &
leaders into the world to make a difference there as well.
Karin: Who is the person that you consider have the most influence in your church organization
and why?
Jason: Pastor David, without doubt, is the most influential person in our church. He sets
the vision, leads the church, and continually reminds us of our purpose. But in the same
capacity, he also empowers others to lead. When we added a second campus, David
reminded us that the church isnt about himhe didnt want to build a huge stadium in
Valdosta to have people from all over coming to himhe wanted to plant churches in
other small communities around the area, each with their own pastoral staffs.
Karin: Please describe the most important characteristics / leadership of the Pastor of your
organization and the leadership team as a whole.
Jason: Our pastor is HUMBLE. He isnt out to make a name for himself, but rather to
make Jesus name known. He listens to othershe isnt just there to be a talking head &
draw a paycheck. He has sacrificed so much of his life to plant this church, and he is
passionate about it continuing to follow Gods lead for the future. For example, when our
church began the process of buying land for a new building, every single step was

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

23

covered in prayer and David was very clear that God had led the Shepherding Team to
that point. He wasnt just telling the church that he had made a decision & that was the
end of ithe was making that decision in conjunction with others.
Karin: What do you consider are the most important challenges and difficulties your Church
organization face in the 21st century in order to continue to grow?
Jason: It is typical to measure a churchs success by the number of seats it has & how
many church members it has, but Pastor David often says, We do not measure our
success by the number we SEAT, but by the number we SEND. Sending out church
planters, missionaries, and church members into other communities is actually a way for
us to measure our growth. So our new church wont seat thousands upon thousands of
peoplebut we will instead be praying for new sites to open in surrounding
communities. That makes CrossPointe different, and that in itself is a challenge.
Karin: What internal and external factors, do you consider, influence church leadership in the 21st
century?
Jason: A huge external factor is that the culture is always changing. Its difficult for the
church to be relevant without compromising the message.
An internal factor that has influenced church leadership would include technological
advancesif a church is resistant to technology, for example, it will limit itself in the
type of church member it will attract. In this example, CrossPointe chooses to utilize a
wide variety of technology to help engage people, rather than being afraid that
technology will distract people.
Karin: What strategies and tools you consider are the most important to employ in order to
achieve organizational growth, considering the rapid changes in society today?

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

24

Jason: While society may change, we continue to love people the same and stay faithful
to the mission and vision that Pastor David provides to us.
Karin: What is your vision of the future for CrossPointe?
Jason: CrossPointe Church will continue to grow and will one day have multiple
campuses all over South GA and North FL. We will continue to serve in the future as we
have in the past.
Thank you so much for your time and for sharing your great insight about your experience at
CrossPointe.

church that had a very clear-cut vision and mission
Member has been in a leadership position in CrossPointe for about 5 years
Member started a LifeGroup in his house one year in attendance at CrossPoitnte
Member is also part of the Servant Leadership Team which helps fulfill the vision for the
church
Member desired a leadership role at CrossPointe
Member wanted to make a difference using personal strengths
As a LifeGroup leader the member has the task to uphold and communicate the mission
and vision to the group members.
As a leader, the member has the task of encouraging spiritual growth and formation
among the members
The Servant Leadership team serves in various capacities within the church such as
serving communion to greeting church attendees during services
The Servant Leadership team is also available for short notice project such as when
CrossPointe served as a shelter during Hurricane Matthew
Church has grown and has a small campus in Quitman testing the vision to be a multi-site
church with the same values but in different communities
In the past few years the Mission Statement has changed to Connect, Grow, Serve to
Connect, Grow, Serve, Send
The mission change is related to the belief of sending missionaries and leaders into the
world to make a difference in other areas as well
Member considers Pastor to be the most influential person in the church
Pastor sets the vision, leads the church, and continually remind members of the purpose
Pastor also empowers other to lead

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

26

When added the second campus Pastor explained the church was not about him, but
planting other churchs in other small communities around the area with their own
pastoral staff
Pastor is humble He is not to make a name for himself but to make Jesus name known
Pastor listen to others
Pastor has sacrificed a lot to plant this church and he is passionate about continuing to
follow Gods lead for the future
Pastor was clear that God had led the Shepherding Team while buying land for a new
building
Pastor was making the decision with others
Pastor measures success by not by the number of SEAT, but by the numbers we SEND
Sending out church planters, missionaries, and church members into other communities is
actually a way for them to measure growth. That is what makes CrossPointe different and
in itself is a challenge
They pray for new sites to open in surrounding communities
A huge external factor is that the culture is always changing
It is difficult for the church to be relevant without compromising the message
Technological advances has influenced the church leadership as an internal factor
Not resistant to technology so that it does not limit the type of church member it will
attract
CrossPointe utilize a wide variety of technology to engage people
While society may change, member believes that they continue to love people the same
and stay faithful to the mission and vision of the Pastor
Members vision of the future is that CrossPointe will have multiple campuses all over
South GA and North FL
Member believe that they will continue to serve in the future as they have in the past

Synergy: Send! Pastor David Rogers
0:00 good morning faith family has their by
0:01 doing this morning
0:04 good to see you here today I don't have
0:07 to ask if you're excited i heard that
0:08 during the baptisms so that was awesome
0:11 how many be excited to be here this
0:14 morning
0:15 hey guys over there yeah i think mr.
0:19 just to reassure that you are excited
0:21 about being here I tell you that was a
0:22 one of the most vocal baptisms I think
0:25 we've ever had but it was good it is
0:27 nothing greater than just seeing someone
0:28 follow through in obedience to what god
0:32 has done already in their hearts through
0:34 believers baptism and I think it's just
0:37 really special time for us as a church
0:39 and there's absolutely nothing wrong
0:41 with celebrating the way we celebrate
0:43 baptisms amen
0:44 and so it's just something I think we
0:46 should be very excited about it's good
0:48 to see here this morning I missed you

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

0:50 last week but I heard that there and did
0:52 a great job filling in for me and I
0:54 appreciate him doing that while i was
0:56 away spending some time with my dad i'm
0:58 looking forward to diving in this
0:59 morning and continuing our series today
1:01 we actually wrap up our series that
1:03 we've been going through for nine weeks
1:05 now today's tonight we called synergy
1:07 and we're going to wrap this series up
1:09 next week we're going to start a new
1:11 series called share the season and we're
1:13 going to look at it it really Jesus all
1:15 the way through to the new year and it's
1:18 not that we don't look at Jesus all the
1:20 time but I mean we'll be looking in
1:22 depth sort of a doctrinal study on Jesus
1:24 through the holidays and so I'm very
1:26 excited about that as well but this
1:29 morning we wrap up this series and we've
1:31 been looking about how how Jesus calls
1:33 his church to come together to be a part
1:37 of something greater than we could ever
1:38 be as individuals and as we think about
1:41 our role in and and and who we are as a
1:45 believer in Christ Jesus a follower of
1:48 Christ or a just a child of God just
1:51 knowing who we are as a believer is is
1:55 awesome enough but knowing that God
1:57 calls us together to belong to the body
2:00 and to be a part of something even
2:02 greater than ourselves is really
2:04 encouraging and so I'm looking forward
2:06 to diving into this message today and
2:08 and and today we're going to be talking
2:09 about what it means to send and i'll get
2:12 into that
2:13 that as soon as we dive into the message
2:15 let's pray then we're going to dive in
2:17 to the truth of God's Word pray with me
2:19 if you will your heavenly Father Lord

28

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

2:21 Jesus Holy Spirit of God Lord we are
2:23 thankful for this time together as a
2:27 church and we are thankful for God just
2:29 the the remarkable things that you're
2:31 doing in the lives of so many here
2:33 god it's just so wonderful to see
2:35 baptisms like we saw this morning and to
2:38 even celebrate that God knowing that
2:40 baptism is a beautiful image of more
2:44 than just salvation it's it's the death
2:46 burial and resurrection our identity
2:48 with you and so father i'm thankful to
2:52 see those that come forth and obedience
2:54 for that and God just knowing all the
2:57 great things you're doing is we're
2:58 praying here in the children guys just
3:00 so amazing to think about the life
3:02 change that's taking place here in this
3:05 place and father i pray that as we dive
3:07 into your word today God that as we
3:09 begin to get a glimpse of of how
3:13 collectively we can come together as a
3:16 body and be a part of something that is
3:18 even beyond our own community father is
3:21 just so encouraging to see that you
3:23 allow us to do that so father as we dive
3:25 into your word i pray that you would
3:27 speak deeply into our hearts and guy
3:29 that we would be encouraged and we would
3:30 be just moved by the presence of of who
3:35 you are and also God just by diving into
3:38 your work together the truth of your
3:40 word
3:40 we love you and we thank you in Jesus
3:43 name Amen
3:44 this morning we started off with a
3:47 bumper video that I thought was very
3:50 creative that JT had had done for us
3:54 here this morning it was a it was a
3:57 video that illustrates the the
4:00 discipleship pathway of the spiritual

29

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

4:02 pathway of an individual it starts with
4:05 taking a look at at a an infant in
4:08 Christ someone who has just been through
4:11 a time of just a life change in and and
4:14 salvation is now part of their life but
4:17seeing the growth that comes with being
4:20 sanctified by the Holy Spirit of God and
4:22 growing in
4:24 relationship with the Lord but also
4:25 growing and maturing as a believer in
4:27 Christ and as we grow recognizing that
4:30 growth will bring about opportunities
4:33 for us to also share our faith share our
4:37 story share the gospel ultimately see
4:40 people come to Christ and ultimately as
4:42 a believer in Christ Jesus begin to make
4:45 disciples and so that's what it's really
4:47 all about but you see the story doesn't
4:49 end there because that's what we
4:51 typically see around here
4:54 the story continues as we look at the
4:57 gospel and what God has called us as a
5:00 church to do in to be is to be not only
5:02 those who are making disciples but as we
5:05 mature the saints as the Saints grow up
5:08 in their faith as they they get to a
5:10 place where you know maybe God decides
5:13 he wants to use them we see oftentimes
5:15 that God would call believers or
5:18 children of God followers of Christ to
5:21 carry out a specific task we often see
5:25 this in the way of missionaries who
5:27 respond in faith and say I believe God's
5:30 calling me to go to a foreign country
5:32 into to plant my life there in to take
5:36 with me the gospel message of Jesus that
5:38 people in Africa or honduras would come
5:41 to know christ as well and so we often
5:43 see this sort of thing happening with
5:45 missionaries we also know that there are
5:47 many others that would respond to just

30

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

5:50 ministry opportunities we have sent from
5:52 this place those whom we have raised up
5:54 his co Labor's out to be a youth pastors
5:57 and other churches do or to go out and
5:59 be worship leaders or even pastures of
6:03 other churches but one of the things
6:05 that we recognize as we look at the
6:07 spiritual pathway is that our
6:08 responsibility as a church is to measure
6:11 not our effectiveness but how many we
6:13 can seat on sunday morning we don't we
6:16 don't measure our attendance so to speak
6:18 what we do is is we look at how
6:20 effective we are for the kingdom of God
6:22 by examining how many were sending out
6:25 because that is what really the biblical
6:28 mandate is for us as a church
6:30 collectively it's a beautiful thing when
6:32 you think about it and I'll of the video
6:35 that we saw a while ago is it sort of
6:36 point
6:37 to this idea but the video fell right at
6:41 the end of where we talk about sending
6:43 co-laborers out so today the message is
6:45 really to help us understand a little
6:48 better what it means to be a sending
6:51 body or ascending church and that's what
6:54 we're going to be diving in here in just
6:57 a moment as we dive into the passage
6:59 that we're going to be looking at you
7:00 you may be saying what's that got to do
7:02 with me i'm not a church planter i'm not
7:04 a missionary I you know what has a lot
7:06 to do with you because this is what God
7:08 brings us together for this is what God
7:11 brings us together for that we would all
7:13 be doing our part that ultimately we
7:15 could send out those coal avers so let's
7:18 dive into the text this morning and take
7:21 a look we're looking at Philippians
7:22 chapter to Philippians chapter 2 verses

31

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

7:24 19 through 24 and the message is titled
7:28 sinned because that's what we're talking
7:30 about is sending its a Philippians
7:32 chapter 2 verses 19 to 24 nepal you know
7:36 he if you know anything about Paul in
7:38 Philippians you you know that that they
7:40 had this very unique relationship that
7:43 there is no doubts and reading the works
7:45 of Paul not just his letter to them but
7:48 to other churches as well that Paul
7:50 truly has an affection for the
7:52 Philippians and they have an affection
7:54 for him you you can tell right away and
7:57 is reading in the writings that that you
7:59 know he cares deeply for them and they
8:01 have they have been very supportive of
8:03 Paul and his ministry and so this
8:06 morning we're looking at this text in
8:07 Philippians chapter two we see something
8:09 very unique is Paul identifies who he is
8:13 often referred to as Paul son in the
8:16 ministry he identifies Timothy and and
8:18 we see something really remarkable that
8:20 Paul is teaching us about being a body
8:23 that sins a church that sins so I want
8:27 to look at that this morning starting
8:29 with verse 19 read this with me if you
8:32 will
8:33 Paul says this he says I hope in the
8:36 Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon
8:39 so that I too may be cheered by good
8:43 news or by news of you for I have no one
8:46 like him who will be genuinely concerned
8:49 for your welfare
8:51 for they all seek their own interests
8:54 not those of Christ but you know
8:55 Timothy's proven worth how as a son with
8:59 the father he has served me in the
9:02 gospel
9:03 I hope therefore to send him just as
9:06 soon as I see how it will go with me and

32

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

9:09 I trust in the lord that shortly i'm
9:11 myself i myself will come also now in
9:16 our passage here Paul starts off by
9:18 making this statement that is really a
9:20 kind of a cool statement and this is
9:22 where we get the the idea of it being
9:25 something that we do where we send out
9:29 those who god has raised up Paul no
9:33 doubt could use Timothy in his ministry
9:35 Paul no doubt could use a man like
9:38 Timothy to to continue to stick around
9:41 to invest in the ministry in which he's
9:44 gotten if Paul has the ability to go
9:45 then Timothy could certainly go with him
9:47 but here we see that Paul says something
9:50 that that really reveals a kingdom
9:52 mindset as the Apostle Paul says these
9:55 words he says I hope in the Lord Jesus
9:58 to send Timothy in other words Paul is
10:03 saying I'm hoping I'm praying that
10:06 Timothy will be able to go out before me
10:09 and Paul even said he said I hope that
10:11 one day I could come as well but that's
10:13 not a guarantee
10:14 Paul is saying here he said I'm sending
10:16 this young man and there's a lot that he
10:19 says about Timothy in the the remainder
10:22 of the verse but it's really important
10:23 that we understand that there's this
10:25 concept of of sending him you know in
10:28 the early church we see God doing some
10:30 incredible things I we see God raising
10:34up people we see we see God transforming
10:36lives through through the the works of
10:39the Apostles in the the disciples of
10:42Jesus as they go out and they preach the
10:44gospel we see lives change we see people
10:47being baptized we see people growing in
10:50their faith as we read through the book
10:52of Acts it and we begin to see other
10:53names pop up is as other people are

33

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

10:56discipled and and cold to ministry so to
10:59speak and and so we see
11:00this remarkable movement of God taking
11:04place in the new testament in the early
11:06church and they would raise up these
11:08co-laborers and then they would send out
11:10no doubt Timothy was one of those young
11:12men that came to know Christ Jesus was
11:15discipled and have been mentored by Paul
11:17and now he's at a place where Paul feels
11:20very confident in sending this young man
11:23out to continue the work
11:25where's where he can't go Timothy can
11:28and so it's really a remarkable concept
11:31to think about our responsibility or our
11:33role as a body of Christ to be a sending
11:37church to be ascending body and so we
11:40see this sort of played out now why did
11:42they do this why was it that they were
11:45sending people out why was it that
11:47people were going out away from
11:48Jerusalem we're really all of this sort
11:51of began its the disciples went back in
11:52the upper room and and we see the the
11:55coming of the Holy Spirit we see God
11:57just doing incredible things but now
11:59we're beginning to see people go out and
12:02they're they're really expanding their
12:05their boundaries as as missionaries or
12:08disciples of christ jesus
12:10well the answer that question is because
12:12there are lost people out there there
12:14are people that don't know Jesus there
12:16are people that haven't heard the gospel
12:19and believe it or not there are still
12:21people even in our own country here in
12:24the United States of America that
12:26haven't heard the gospel there are
12:27people that have maybe heard of the
12:30historical Jesus I mean they've they've
12:31heard about Jesus somewhere but they

34

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

12:33don't know the the the Gospel story of
12:36Jesus they don't know who Jesus really
12:38is and so as we as we look at this we
12:41begin to realize that there was the
12:43sending of missionaries that were going
12:45out and people who were rooting their
12:48lives into other places besides
12:50Jerusalem all for the sake of the
12:53kingdom of God all for the sake of
12:54people coming to know Jesus all for the
12:57name of Jesus and all for the glory of
12:59God so we see this happening in the
13:03early church and we look at this and we
13:05try to understand this you know here in
13:09our own country and even in Canada there
13:11it is said
13:13that there are 269 million people that
13:18don't know Jesus now hope that doesn't
13:23include one of you here today but but
13:26the reality is that there's a lot of
13:27people in our country and in Canada and
13:30North America if you will that just
13:32don't know Jesus and as we think about
13:35how this relates to us we begin to
13:37realize that that it's just important
13:39for us to be ascending church is it was
13:42for the early church right after Jesus
13:45had ascended into heaven
13:47it's just as equally important that we
13:49continue this great task of being a body
13:54that makes disciples and equip the
13:59Saints for the work of ministry and the
14:02raising of that we would see the raising
14:04of coal laborers who God himself would
14:06call and that we as a body of believers
14:09would send out to continue the great
14:12work for the kingdom of god it's
14:14important just as important today as it
14:17was then this is what we see taking
14:20place but i want to narrow down for just
14:22a moment I want to really understand why

35

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

14:24we should be a sending church i want to
14:27take it to one city specifically a city
14:30that I've gone to over the last couple
14:31of months a multiple times had
14:33opportunity to go and work with some
14:35people there as we as we have been sort
14:38of enlightened to some great things that
14:41God is doing in that city in that city
14:43is boston massachusetts on my first trip
14:46there i was talking to some of the
14:48missionaries and one of the things that
14:49they they brought to my attention was
14:52this reality that Boston was a very
14:55influential city in fact is the hub of
14:58technology is the hub of the medical
15:01industry is the hub of intellectual
15:03community if you will with schools like
15:06Harvard and MIT being there in fact
15:09Boston itself has 81 universities in
15:11that one city and so it's a hub it's a
15:15very influential city to in fact the
15:18entire world and yet it's one of the
15:20darkest cities in our nation
15:23it's one of the is one of this
15:25cities where there are fewer Christians
15:28in any other city in America in fact the
15:30number is this that less than three
15:33percent less than three percent of those
15:36living in the Boston area are born again
15:40if you're evangelical Christians now let
15:43me put that into perspective for you for
15:44just a moment
15:45saudi arabia which is a very Muslim
15:52country has four percent born-again
15:55evangelical believers so thought Saudi
16:00Arabia has more Christians than Boston
16:04our most influential city in the United
16:07States if you never thought there was a
16:11need for us to send missionaries and
16:14church planters out into the world i
16:17hope that gets your attention

36

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

16:19whereas we as a country believe that
16:22politics is the answer for life change
16:25what we come to realize his disciples of
16:27christ jesus is it really jesus is the
16:30answer to the problems that our country
16:32faces and so we have to be obedient
16:37we must be faithful in making disciples
16:41here in our own community and trusting
16:45God that he would mature those disciples
16:47as we disciple them and seeing them rise
16:51up and and equipped by the Holy Spirit
16:54of God and knowing that some of those
16:57disciples will be called out and set
16:59apart for a work that doesn't exist here
17:02but exists somewhere else for them to go
17:05and that our responsibility at that time
17:08becomes one where we are faithful to
17:12send we must be ascending church and so
17:17Paul he's he's talking to the
17:20Philippians here and he says I i'm
17:22praying I'm hoping that real soon I'll
17:25be able to send Timothy to you because
17:27he knows that the Timothy is a guy who
17:30is who is is very capable of taking the
17:33gospel message and doing ministry there
17:35we see something in here that I want us
17:38to look at
17:39as we look at our passage we begin to
17:42notice several realities about sending
17:46about being a church that is faithful to
17:50send we begin to see these as paul is
17:53writing this letter and he he sort of
17:56reveals these things whether or not he
17:57was really intentionally revealing these
17:59things about sending or not I don't know
18:01but he he reveals these truths to us
18:04that we're with as we look at this we
18:06begin to see man this is this is really
18:09is God's plan for us to to identify
18:12those people who are called and set
18:14apart for missionary work to go away

37

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

18:17from these walls and then for us to get
18:18behind that movement and to push them
18:21out if you will to send them out to
18:23equip them to send them out so that the
18:25gospel would advance beyond our own
18:28communities in which we live so I want
18:31us to look at these one of the things
18:33that we notice about sending is that
18:36passion always precedes sending passion
18:41always precedes sending one of the
18:44things that we notice about Timothy as
18:46we begin to study his life is that
18:48Timothy was a man who very much was
18:50passionate about Jesus and passionate
18:53about others we begin to see this and
18:55all the different writings that we have
18:56in scripture about Timothy he was a
18:59young man who love Jesus he was a young
19:01man who who love people he loved the
19:03fact that God was using him in
19:05remarkable ways to advance the kingdom
19:07of God some Timothy was this guy just a
19:10normal guy like you and I or you know
19:13not a girl like you i guess but a guy
19:15like me but but the reality is guys
19:18using men and women just like Timothy
19:21just normal people who are who are
19:24living their life and suddenly God
19:26transforms their heart and he does
19:28something really remarkable in their
19:30life and they grow in their their faith
19:32that grow in their their understanding
19:34they grow in their knowledge they grow
19:36in the fullness of god and god suddenly
19:38calls
19:39i'm out to do something remarkably
19:42larger than they could ever be on their
19:44own and it's such a beautiful picture
19:46but we always see in these callings is
19:50that that passion as we think about
19:52sending passion always precedes sending

38

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

19:56Paul when he was writing to Timothy
19:59specifically in his first letter he
20:01wrote this he says i'm reminded of your
20:03sincere faith you see there was nothing
20:07fake about Timothy was he was a man who
20:10loved Jesus he says i'm reminded of your
20:13sincere faith a faith that dwelt first
20:16in your grandmother Lois and your mother
20:18Eunice and now i am sure dwells in you
20:21as well Paul says to Timothy in this
20:23letter he says I see Jesus in you I see
20:28God working in you because Timothy is so
20:32passionate about Jesus and now in this
20:36letter to the Philippians he writes this
20:38he says I hope the sensitivity to you
20:40for I have no one like him who will be
20:44genuinely concerned for your welfare
20:46i love this i have no one like you i
20:51want to send you the best you know it's
20:55remarkable to think about because i
20:57think for so so often in ministry as as
21:01pastors when we have somebody that
21:02really rises up and you see God all over
21:05the mandate they begin to have this
21:06conversation about talking I mean about
21:09missionary being a missionary being a
21:11church planner one of the things that
21:12you always sort of cringe as like what
21:14you want to leave that such a selfish
21:17thought isn't it
21:18why would we want God's plan for for
21:22everyone's in individual life and not
21:24only that but why would we want to be a
21:26part of even the sending that that's
21:29what God has in store for them and I
21:32love what we see here is Paul is writing
21:34to the Philippians he says I don't have
21:36anyone like him he it for me personally
21:39he's the best I got
21:41and yet his prayer is I hope to send him
21:45no doubt Paul could use Timothy no doubt

39

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

21:50he could have continued to use it
21:51in remarkable ways and what I began to
21:54realize that i read this passage in so
21:56many others is that without passion for
21:58jesus we will never raise up the labors
22:00nor see the need to see in without a
22:05passion for jesus you see if the passion
22:09of christ doesn't burn deeply in our
22:11hearts we won't value discipleship and
22:16if we don't decide if we don't value
22:18discipleship then we will probably never
22:20see co-laborers rise up and if we never
22:24see co-laborers roundup rise up we will
22:27probably never have the opportunity to
22:29be a sending church be sending always is
22:35preceded by a passion for jesus in his
22:39kingdom his will for our life that's
22:45where it begins
22:46that's where it begins a few months ago
22:49I had an opportunity to go up to Boston
22:51with several local pastor from our
22:53church
22:54I mean from our community we you know I
22:56came back from one of the trips and I
22:57was just so intrigued by what God was
22:59doing in these in this area that I i
23:02begin to talk to several of the other
23:03pastors in our community because I
23:05realized you know we can't we can't do
23:08it all from valdosta mean there's just
23:10so many opportunities up there for other
23:12churches to get involved and so I began
23:14talking with a bunch of the pastor's
23:16around here and we decided to go back to
23:18Boston and let them have a look for
23:20themselves because it you know they
23:21didn't believe what i was saying so they
23:22want to go and have you know see for
23:24themselves not really they believe me
23:25but anyway we went up there together and
23:28we begin to go around and visit the

40

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

23:30different church planters and in here
23:32from the missionaries that are working
23:34in that boston area and they came to the
23:36same conclusions that I did that that
23:38God is doing something really remarkable
23:40in this place and one of the things that
23:42we noticed in the church planters and I
23:45mean it was with every one of them is
23:47this great passion that they had for
23:49Jesus and this great passion that they
23:52had for their City remember as we were
23:57sort of debriefing in one in the hotel
23:59that night one of the local pastors he
24:02says you know
24:03he says seeing their passion for jesus
24:06has reminded me of how easily we lose
24:11our passion for jesus when we get
24:14comfortable in our Christianity you see
24:18we live our life in the south where just
24:20about everybody has heard of Jesus and
24:23not saying they follow Jesus I'm just
24:26saying they've heard of him so its it
24:27gets real easy for us to sort of live
24:29out our life here in our own community
24:31just the sort of casual Christianity but
24:35up there up there where there's less
24:38than three percent of the population who
24:41believes in Jesus those church planters
24:44and their wives and their children are
24:46very lonely but they're passionate about
24:51Jesus and they believe in the calling
24:54that God has placed on their life and so
24:57every day they share the gospel and they
24:59lean on each other and they just
25:00continue to do the work that God has
25:02called them to do because they have been
25:05sent to a city to reach city for Jesus I
25:13remember hearing the in a video that i
25:15want to show you here I don't think
25:17we've we showed you the video yet every
25:18I may have skipped over that i want to

41

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

25:20show you a video here now that we made
25:24we had an opportunity to go up there and
25:26and and really just meet with David
25:29Butler he's a North American Mission
25:30Board missionary up there but then also
25:32a lot of the church planters that are
25:35working right now there's currently
25:36about about 60 church planters that
25:38we've identified and we've had that
25:40awesome privilege to meet most of them
25:42but they're doing some incredible work
25:44so i want to roll that video here this
25:46morning i want to show you this before
25:47we continue to look at this but as you
25:49see this video just think about the
25:50passion that we must have for Jesus to
25:54proceed sending
25:59one of the most incredible things that
26:02Jesus ever told his disciples was he
26:04said this he said you shall be my
26:06witnesses in Jerusalem Judea Samaria and
26:09to the ends of the earth
26:10you know today I'm standing and what is
26:13known as boston common and it's the
26:15first part first city park in America
26:18but there's a lot of history here
26:19because also what took place here was
26:22the first Great Awakening and I tell you
26:24as I think about all this going on in
26:26our country today in the in the need for
26:29spiritual awakening to take place
26:31I think about the opportunities we have
26:33to go to other places than just our own
26:37hometown our own community and just like
26:39for you to hear from some of the people
26:40that are already living in Boston who
26:41are already committing their lives to
26:43reaching that city for Christ's one of
26:45the most influential cities in America
26:47and seeing how we could come along
26:49beside them and help them and partner

42

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

26:51with them to reach our Judea Samaria and
26:53ultimately the engineer crosspoint
26:57church family I want to thank you so
26:58much for the way you've already made
27:00such a big difference for us here in
27:03Boston
27:04my name is david butler and i have the
27:05privilege of serving as the North
27:07American Mission Board Sin City
27:09missionary that's a mouthful but what it
27:11basically means is i have the privilege
27:13of serving over 60 church planters being
27:16a part of a greater vision someday that
27:19will hopefully result in a hundred
27:20life-giving churches all throughout the
27:23Greater Boston region of 5.8 million
27:25people the meteor is perhaps unmatched
27:29by any other place in all of North
27:30America only about three percent of the
27:32people in our world class City
27:36have ever heard a gospel witness enough
27:38to say yes or no to the life-saving
27:40message of Christ so I just want to
27:43thank you for already being such a big
27:44partner your pastor david rogers and the
27:47team of elders who have common to meet
27:49some of the people on your staff we just
27:51want to say thank you and we look
27:52forward to sharing more more the vision
27:55with you and look forward to being able
27:57to be a part of what God's doing in
27:58amazing ways they're in valdosta through
28:01you
28:01hi I'm Alan birth IAM i am a church

43

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

28:19defined to me that God send me and our
28:22team to one of the greatest cities on
28:24the planet to represent Jesus phenomenal
28:26city where people are driven they're
28:28talented they're here for a purpose and
28:32our dream is to help them find a true
28:34purpose their ultimate purpose
28:37OMG surprised to get a vibrant community
28:38life we just really have a heart to be
28:41the kind of church so we believe Jesus
28:43intended his church that he never really
28:45our first the churches of building
28:47churches of people we believe that the
28:48Bible is one large true defining story
28:53that makes sense of all our personal
28:56story every morning there's thousands of
28:58commuters who jump on the train and
28:59belmont these our culture shapers and so
29:02we as a church desire to influence
29:04influencers by the power of the gospel
29:06we believe we have a unique opportunity
29:08to impact those town to no apologies
29:12even grace exist to see the gospel
29:15transform people into a community
29:18on mission for the worship and
29:20exaltation of Jesus Christ in ancient
29:23vessel and I can accent teen we see that
29:26the people there in that city said that
29:29the people that were following Christ
29:31had turned the world upside down and so
29:34our hope is that the power and presence
29:37of Jesus with so pervade our city that
29:41we would hear that same accusation our
29:43neighborhoods our schools our hospitals
29:45our government our workplaces are
29:48different and transform because of the
29:51power and presence of Jesus are
29:53providing our city what is it worth it's
29:55worth our lives
29:56it's worth leaving our jobs and
29:58investing in the communities you know
30:00you can really point a finger on the map

44

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

30:02of Boston and say there needs to be a
30:05church there really phone love
30:07with this city we have this vision to
30:10saturate the city of warfare with the
30:12gospel so that every man
30:15woman and child would have a daily
30:17encounter with the goodness the truth
30:20and the beauty of Jesus Christ crisis
30:23called us to be erratically diverse
30:24community
30:26community where people come together we
30:28shouldn't be together
30:29according to the rest of the city we
30:31need to churches to come alongside us to
30:33do three things to pray to provide and
30:36to participate and we're simply grateful
30:38for partners like crosspoint church like
30:41other people who are just investing
30:43prayer and resources in the work here so
30:45how will God use you to become part of
30:48our story to help see this vision a
30:51reality we can't wait to see you join us
30:53to see it happen
30:55let's go can we just thank you save in
31:00thank goodness for what he's doing
31:03that's just one of many cities that we
31:06have an opportunity to go to and to be a
31:08part of and and even to send out those
31:12who would feel called to that City to be
31:15a part of a mighty movement of God where
31:17God is taking the most influential city
31:20in America and he's transforming lives
31:22through those missionaries and many more
31:24to come and to follow in their footsteps
31:26but it all begins with a passion for
31:28jesus and one of the things that we've
31:30recognized is it with these planners are
31:32certainly a passion for jesus you know
31:35Timothy he stood above the rest when it
31:38came to that those who Paul with
31:41recycling and mentoring but but his
31:44passion preceded his sending the second
31:46thing I want to mention here we've got
31:48to hurry because this is about a
31:49five-hour sermon and we've got just a
31:51few more minutes to go but but the

45

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

31:53second thing that we see here and i
31:55think this is so good for us to look at
31:57is this reality that capability proceed
32:00sending capability proceed sending i
32:04love what we see here
32:05note that that Timothy capability in
32:08verse 22 when Paul says this he says in
32:11verse 22 he says but you know and
32:14remember he speaking to the Philippians
32:15he says but you know Timothy's and he
32:18uses these two words it gives me chill
32:20bumps just thinking about his proven
32:22worth I love that he says he said this
32:25is a man who has not just been talking
32:28the talk but he's been living the walk
32:31he's been he's been living out his
32:33cruciate his passion for jesus it just
32:36spills out and in here
32:37his capabilities as a as a minister of
32:41the gospel is someone who can be used by
32:43God our are not just seen by Paul but
32:46others have recognized this in Timothy
32:50as well as appalled he uses this
32:52terminology he says you know Timothy's
32:55proven worse is worth it so not only is
32:58Timothy very passionate about Jesus but
33:01he is also capable as a spiritual leader
33:04and what does that mean for us i think
33:06that means for us is that training and
33:08equipping becomes so important for us in
33:11the life of the churches we begin to
33:12raise up co-laborers we've got to place
33:15an emphasis on equipping the saints to
33:18do the work of ministry in Ephesians 4
33:20it teaches us that the leadership of the
33:22church and those those who are already
33:24serving as co labors of the gospel that
33:27they have a huge responsibility
33:29it says in Scripture to equip the Saints
33:32to do the work of ministry and so what
33:35we need to do is we make disciples and
33:38as we raise up a maturing multiplying
33:42leaders is to continue training and
33:44equipping and coaching and deciding the
33:47those that they would become capable ko
33:49Labor's Timothy when I mean Paul when he

46

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

33:51was writing to Timothy and a second
33:53letter he said this he says you then my
33:56child talking to Timothy he says be
33:58strengthened by the grace that is in
34:00Christ Jesus and what you have heard
34:02from me in the presence of many
34:04witnesses entrust to faithful men who
34:07will be able to teach others also do you
34:09see what he's saying here Paul is saying
34:11to Timothy says man i've been teaching
34:13you
34:14I've been coaching you have been
34:15equipping you and now i'm getting ready
34:17to send you what he says
34:19just as you go make sure that you also
34:23continue this process of raising up
34:26co-laborers faithful man of God whom you
34:29were pouring into that are also capable
34:32of being sit out and so this is a
34:35remarkable thing that we see unfolding
34:37here and it's just a really a beautiful
34:39picture of how the kingdom of God is
34:41working in such remarkable ways and how
34:44he gives us an opportunity to be a part
34:46of that the last thing that I want to
34:48mention here is this
34:50that compatibility also proceed Cindy
34:57compatibility sending sending is about
35:01partnering sending is about partnerships
35:04with those who go out you see the
35:06difference and thinking going which day
35:08Darren was talking about last week when
35:10I think of going I think of us as a as a
35:13as a body going out on a shirt short
35:15term mission trip or something like that
35:17and then coming back and settling back
35:19and going out maybe next summer and
35:21doing something else when I think of
35:23going which i think is hugely important
35:25for the body of Christ I think of it
35:27being sort of a a temporary thing but
35:29when I think of sending I think about
35:31those who would go out and literally
35:33plant their lives in another place
35:35without any intentions really of ever
35:38coming back unless God were to call them

47

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

35:40back or somewhere else but they are
35:42going for the purpose of being planted
35:45and ultimately routing taking root in
35:48that city so that they can have a
35:50greater impact for the sake of the
35:52gospel and so here we begin to see as we
35:55think about partnering with with people
35:57that we send out or even partner with
35:59those who may be already been sent out
36:01and in need of partnerships we start
36:04thinking about this we begin to realize
36:06that chemistry that good chemistry
36:08between us and our partners is hugely
36:11important we actually see this in the
36:13text here is Paul writes these words in
36:15verse 22 and 23 he says this but you
36:19know Timothy's proven worth how as a son
36:22with the father he has served with me in
36:25the gospel I hope therefore to send him
36:28i love that like a son to a father like
36:33a son to a father there's a true
36:34relationship here so as we think about
36:37what it means to be a sending church
36:39compatibility good chemistry is huge for
36:44the life of the church and those who we
36:46partner with so what should be our
36:48biblical response and this is where I
36:50want to wrap up here I've only got three
36:52more points i want to give you but some
36:55of your like John now getting ready
36:56that's good but here's here's what I
36:58want to wrap up with ok this is really
37:00important for us because I know that
37:02we sit here the tendency for all of us
37:05is to think well that's what our church
37:07is doing but that we don't have a part
37:09in it that somehow this message is not
37:13for me personally but we as a church oh
37:16I guess a portion of our money may go to
37:18do this kind of work or you know
37:20whatever and that is true but i believe
37:23that for every one of us sitting here
37:25today as we look at this biblical
37:27mandate to be ascending churches we
37:29think about what christ is calling us to
37:31do to go out and to preach the gospel

48

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

37:33that people would come to know Jesus and
37:36that they would grow and mature in their
37:38faith becoming multiplying leaders and
37:40ultimately co-laborers that we together
37:43have this responsibility to send and so
37:47what is our individual responsibility
37:50well here's one that you could write
37:51down one to participate to participate
37:54we can go to these places where we have
37:58partnered we can go to Boston we go to
38:00Honduras we can go to all the different
38:02places that we are partnering with and
38:04there's going to be more of that to come
38:06real soon as we talked about the
38:08different missional opportunities that
38:10we're going to have here in the church
38:12and so we must think about the reality
38:15that we are called to go here's another
38:17one we can provide one of the greatest
38:19needs of all missionaries and church
38:21planters is financial resources
38:24oh it is really important for us to know
38:26this is that when we give of our
38:29financial resources through our
38:30generosity as individuals in his church
38:33that a large portion of that money's
38:37goes to missionary endeavors and church
38:40planting and supporting those that are
38:43in need of starting new works in
38:46different places
38:47it's really important for us to
38:49understand that i love with Paul said to
38:51the Philippians in chapter 4 verses 15
38:54and 16 Paul says this he said and you
38:59philippians yourselves know that in the
39:03beginning of the gospel when I left
39:05macedonia no church entered into
39:07partnership with me and giving and
39:09receiving except you only even in
39:11Thessalonians you sent me help for my
39:15needs once and then again one of the
39:19things I love about the relationship

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

39:35to provide the financial resources that
39:38Paul needed now here's the last one
39:41here's the last this is one that
39:45everyone in this room can do the last
39:50one is to pray to pray
39:55one of the greatest needs that church
40:01planters all over this country
40:02Commissioner is all over this world one
40:06of the greatest needs that they have is
40:08our prayers because you see they are
40:11fighting spiritual battles every day
40:13many of them living off of just the bare
40:17necessities everything that they can
40:18scrap up 442 to feed their children
40:22there they're living in in in just a
40:24place of poverty as they commit their
40:26lives for the sake of the gospel but the
40:30planners that I've talked to the
40:32missionaries that I've encountered you
40:34know what they don't usually bring that
40:35up what they bring up is the spiritual
40:38warfare that they face in going to dark
40:40places and the only thing that can help
40:44them is really the the interaction of
40:47the the intervention of the Holy Spirit
40:50of God so one of the things that we can
40:53do as individuals here this morning is
40:56to lift up those who are serving in the
41:00capacity of coal Labor's in the cities
41:03and missionaries in these foreign lands
41:08is by committing to pray for them church
41:15family they need our prayers they won't
41:18our prayers we must be a church that is
41:23not just faithful and sending but that
41:28sending is preceded by prayer one last
41:32passage acts 13 2 and 3 it says this and
41:37while they were worshiping the Lord and
41:38fasting the Holy Spirit said set apart
41:42for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to
41:45which I have called them and then after
41:48fasting and praying they laid hands on
41:51them and set them off
41:58this morning we have a remarkable
42:00opportunity to pray for those church
42:03planters that we saw in the video to
42:06pray for the North American Mission

50

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

42:08Board sending missionary who is coaching
42:13and disciple in those planners to pray
42:17for many people just like those guys on
42:19the video who are living in Denver and
42:21Detroit seattle in dallas la all over
42:25this country there's a mighty movement
42:28of God taking place where church
42:30planters are going out into our into our
42:33country and taking with them the gospel
42:38message of Jesus Christ believing that
42:41Jesus is the hope for everyone that they
42:47meet their missionary serving on the
42:50fields in places like Africa and
42:55honduras that are in desperate need of
42:58our prayers and so this morning the
43:01thing that we can do in response to the
43:04reading and the preaching of God's Word
43:06of God speaking into our hearts about
43:09being a cindy Turk is to pray it's the
43:16least we can do for them it's the very
43:21least we can do for them
43:23you want some names to specifically pray
43:26for let me give you a few take them home
43:28put them on your refrigerator whatever
43:30you do wherever you pray maybe you're
43:32not pray in front of your refrigerator
43:33but your nightstand or wherever
43:43here's a couple of names for you
43:46Tanner and his wife Marcia tenders the

44:39for David Butler and his wife Gail David
44:44is in a remarkable position to be a Paul
44:47to a lot of Timothy's and one thing I
44:51know is that David is a man who has a
44:53real shepherding heart but in the same
44:56ways many of us struggle they struggle
44:59to live and survive in a place that they
45:03know they've been called to and they've
45:04been sent to but where the work is hard
45:06and it's difficult
45:08let us pray for David gale let us pray
45:11for Pam c'mon who is in Honduras right
45:14now committed her life to ministering to
45:18the many of the children that are
45:20brought to her under a system of really
45:23foster care
45:24let us pray for Pam de menthe let us
45:27pray for those whom we don't even know
45:29the Faith Family let us be must be faith
45:38to God to pray we have that opportunity
45:42this morning i'm going to close with
45:47prayer our pastors will be down front if
45:49you want to have some continued
45:50conversation with them will be in the
45:52the connection room right after the
45:53service i'll pray and then you respond
45:56let us as a church let us continue to
45:58pray father we thank you for this day
46:02father we thank you for this time

46:07where we have seen you do tremendous
46:09things in this place

46:15that happens all around us on a daily
46:17basis we celebrate the spiritual

0:21but there's a lot of history here
0:22because also what took place here was
0:25the first Great Awakening and I tell you
0:27as I think about all that's going on in
0:29our country today in the in the need for
0:32spiritual awakening to take place
0:35I think about the opportunity we have to
0:37go to other places than just our own
0:40hometown our own community just like for
0:42you to hear from some of the people that
0:43are already living in Boston who are
0:45committing their lives to reaching that
0:47city for Christ's one of the most
0:48influential cities in America and seeing
0:51how we could come along beside them and
0:53help them and partner with them to reach
0:55argyus mirror and ultimately the

1:05us here in Boston
1:07my name is David butler and i have the
1:08privilege of serving as the North
1:10American Mission Board Sin City
1:12missionary that's a mouthful but what it
1:14basically means is i have the privilege
1:16of serving over 60 church planters and
1:19being a part of a greater vision someday
1:21that will hopefully result in a hundred
1:23life-giving churches all throughout the
1:26Greater Boston region of 5.8 million
1:28people the meteor is perhaps unmatched
1:32by any other place in all of North
1:33America only about three percent of
1:35people in our world class City
1:39have ever heard a gospel witness enough
1:41to say yes or no to the life-saving
1:43message of Christ so I just want to
1:46thank you for already being such a big
1:48partner your pastor david rogers and the
1:50team of elders who have common to meet
1:52some of the people on your staff we just
1:54want to say thank you and we look
1:56forward to sharing more and more the

LEADING THE 21ST CENTURY CHURCH TO GROWTH

2:35and our dream is to help them find a
2:37true purpose their ultimate purpose in
2:40Jesus Christ and a vibrant community
2:42life we just really have a heart to be
2:44the kind of church that we believe Jesus
2:46intended his church he never really
2:48refers to the church is a building
2:50churches of people we believe that the
2:52Bible is one large true defining story
2:56that makes sense of all our personal
2:59stories every morning there's thousands
3:01of commuters who jump on the train and
3:02belmont these our culture shapers and so
3:05we as a church desire to influence
3:07influencers by the power of the gospel
3:09we believe we have a unique opportunity
3:11to impact those town to no apology
3:16even grace exist to see the gospel
3:18transform people
3:21on mission for the worship and
3:23exaltation Jesus Christ in ancient
3:26vessel and I can accent teen we see that
3:29the people there in that city said that
3:32the people that were following Christ
3:34had turned the world upside down and so
3:38our hope is that the power and presence
3:40of Jesus with so pervade our city that
3:44we would hear that same accusation our
3:46neighborhoods our schools our hospitals
3:48our government our workplaces are
3:51different and transform because of the
3:54power and presence of Jesus are
3:56pervading our city what is it worth it's
3:58worth our lives
3:59it's worth leaving our jobs and
4:01investing in the communities you know
4:03you can really point a finger on the map
4:05of Boston and say that there needs to be
4:07a church there really fell in love
4:11with this city you have this vision to
4:13saturate the city of wall

4:18woman and child would have a daily

0:24discipleship and partnership with the

0:30believers grow in their faith they soon
0:32discover and embrace the need to belong
0:35and the need to not simply go to church
0:37but to be the church they begin to see
0:40the importance of things like attendance
0:42generosity giving belonging to a small
