Inquiry Based Lesson Plan

Teachers: Ms. Lehman

Subject: United States History

Standard:

Standard #2: Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

Objective (Explicit):

The student will be able to create an outline of the features they want to incorporate into their
app.

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):

Students will be able to list 3 common learning tools/features found within apps used for education with at least 80%
accuracy.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

Students will be able to understand what a creative tool is

Students will be able to engage with their content level and material they want to learn about within it
Students will be able to implement ideas analyzed in the group discussions into their overall design
Students will be able to have a better understanding of the beginning process of app design

Engage (Make content and learning relevant to real life and connect to student interest)
Students will investigate apps that they already use to gain ideas of features that they would like to include in their app.
After brief research, students will create a mind map of those ideas and potential features.

Give the students tablets and monitor the level of

interaction by the students

Use the tablets provided to explore apps that relate to

education. They will find apps that address the
content level and area that they want to base their
project around, then they will find features within
those apps, discuss ones they like and dislike with
their peers, and chose ones they think would be
beneficial to their app design.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
Students are placed in groups and will have an opportunity to individually talk about ideas with their groups
and not be pressured into talking within a large group situation.

Student Will:

Teacher will talk with students about what they

found in their app research and provide a guided
discussion for the students about what they found in
their research

Students will come together as a class and explain

tools and features that they found interesting or
necessary. Students will answer guided questions
form the teacher such as what did the feature offer
the user? how useful would the feature be within
your app? or what makes the feature useful?
Here, students will gather notes/information from the
discussion to evaluate their findings and decide what
tools to use

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
There needs to be a balance between individual and student work. Students that didnt get ideas or are
having trouble with research can be guided and instructed by their peers to help stimulate their creativity.
Also, students have a chance to share what they found as individuals and as teams in their research in an
open atmosphere.

The teacher will pass out the mind map outline

Students will complete the mind map outline for

their app design idea. They will add specific
tools/features to the map and provide examples form
the discussion and their notes to describe how they
believe the tools would be useful to potential future
users of their app

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
Using the mind map as a formative assessment, the teacher will develop a better understanding of what the

groups need as far as information, in order to move forward with the project.

Evaluate
Criteria for mind map:
Does the student have an idea of what the app should look like?
Did the student collaborate effectively with other students to create the app?
Is the outline a solid foundation to begin to build off of further in the project?
Criteria for tools involved:
Do the tools align with content standards set by the department of education?
Level of creativity to the design/idea of the learning tool
Has the student analyzed aspects of app making through their research such as cost, software, necessity etc?
