The Posadas are

an important part of
Mexican Christmas
traditions. These
community celebrations take place on
each of the nine
nights (A Novena or
Novenario) leading
up to Christmas from
December 16th to the
24th. This celebration
is a representation
of Mary and Josephs
journey to Bethlehem
and their search for
a place to stay. The
celebration begins
with a procession
with participants
holding candles and
singing. The traditional posada song
represents the conversation between
Mary and Joseph
and the Innkeepers.
Those outside the
house sing the part
of Joseph asking for
shelter, and the family inside responds as
the innkeeper saying
there is no room. The
processions end with
a celebration with
family and friends.

DTE Energy Project Green Light Detroit

Aims To Make Program More Affordable

Eight Detroit service

station owners walked
into a meeting with
Detroit Mayor Mike
Duggan and Detroit
Police Chief James Craig
to talk about their concerns with code enforcement. They walked out
of that meeting with a
project.
Those owners became
part of a pilot called

Project Green Light

Detroit. They agreed
to install and maintain
high-definition indoor
and outdoor cameras, and
make their video stream
available to the Detroit
Police Department. All
eight agreed to upgrade
their lighting and maintain signs showing their
participation. DPD agreed
to monitor the feeds at

their real-time crime center.

Since the project
launched Jan. 1, the participating businesses have
seen a reduction in violent crime of 50 percent,
and the around program
has enrolled another 44
businesses throughout
the city. Chief Craig notes

Christmastime

Although it sometimes seems that there

are too many dollar stores on W. Vernor, the
variety of holiday supplies at the dollar stores
is vast. Gift wrap, festive bags, tissue paper,
ribbon, holiday cards, premade bows, trinkets
to attach to bows! The only limitation is ones
imagination.
For spontaneous get togethers, these store
also carry paper plates, napkins, cups, plasticware, and favors to put at each plate. One might
even need balloons for that unfortunate person whose birthday falls within the Christmas
and New Year boundaries. Make a big deal of

Transportation, represented by Mohammed

as well as demolition
and site preparation.
MDOT is letting bids as
they progress with the

Andy Doctoroff
addressed the importance of frequent and
honest communication, being clear that

indicate. He reported
on the open and honest communication that
the state, through the
Governors Office, has
established with the
Delray Community
Benefits Coalition. The

CBC has been advocating for residents inside

the plaza area, as well
as for those outside the
boundaries that will be

El Club : Have You Been There?

Since its opening in May,

El Club strives to bring something different to the community through their Latin, Pop,
Indie, and Rock concerts. Paula
Anderanin, a promoter for El
Club is inspired by the people
of Southwest Detroit. I love
the sense of community; I have
encountered a lot of people who
are willing to help out. I have
found a lot of support. When
asked the process for bringing Latin artists to Detroit,
Paula looks at how to bring the
Mexican American and South
American communities together
and to highlight artists they
used to listen to back home. We
want to provide a value to the

community, especially when you

come from a different country;
you have to let a lot of things go
to be able to come over here.
Paula stated that one of those
things people let go is the ability
to go out and have a good time
in an environment that they are
used to. For many people, the
Latin-Pop scene was a big thing
back home; we want to make
sure we are providing that kind
of service to the community.
If you havent been to El Club
yet, Paula gave a description
of what to expect. The sound
quality is outstandingI have
seen so much change in the
venue since May. Every time I
go there something is new, they

The whole idea behind (Project) Green Light
was to make neighborhoods in Detroit safe. We see
all thats going on in downtown and Midtown but we
realize that if the neighborhoods dont come back,
the city cant come back, said service station owner
Nasser Beydoun.
Making sure Detroiters know there are well-lit,
clean and secure places to shop for their daily needs
in their neighborhoods is an important part of that
comeback. The cost to complete the necessary facility
upgrades to participate in Project Green Light Detroit
can be steep, which is why the city has worked with
businesses like Comcast and DTE Energy to provide
solutions.
DTE announced that they will be offering bonus
rebates to Detroit companies who are participating in
Project Green Light. That means Detroit-based business can qualify for up to a 65 percent bonus over
standard DTE energy efficiency rebates and zero percent financing on some energy efficient lighting purchases. By making these upgrades, business are eligible to get a rebate check from DTE of up to $7000,
while also saving on their monthly energy bill.
For Trevor Lauer, president of DTE Electric, offering these incentives is another way for the company to
show support for Detroits neighborhoods.
DTE has taken great pride in supporting organizations that share our commitment to neighborhoods
by promoting safety and implementing programs to
revitalize our community and Project Green Light is
just one more great example, said Lauer. Our collaboration with the City of Detroit makes this program
affordable to businesses, and continues efforts around
keeping our neighborhoods safe and contributing to
the Citys remarkable comeback.

investment, and the importance of preserving the historical character of the
Mexicantown Business District and the
Mexicantown Brand.
A panel of local business and community leaders serves as the MHC
Main Street Program Advisory Group
and the Promotion Committee. The
working committees have been providing strategic guidance for the program.

AUTO ACCIDENTS
When a person is
involved in an automobile
accident, it is not only
physically and emotionally damaging, it can also
be financially devastating. In Michigan, we
have the No-Fault Law
which addresses some
of the financial issues.
This law provides that no
matter who caused the
accident, you may recover
your medical expenses
and lost wages from your
own insurance company.
If you have collision coverage, which is optional,
that will also cover the
damage to your vehicle.
These expenses are to be
paid by your insurance
company within thirty
days of them receiving
adequate proof of the loss.
With the No-Fault
Law, claims against the
other party who caused
the accident are only
allowed where there has
been a serious injury. If
that occurs, the injured
victim is entitled to

receive compensation for

pain and suffering arising
out of the accident. In
all cases, it is wise to seek
the advice of an experienced attorney so that
you are properly advised
of your rights.
