Studentswillhavepreviousexperienceusingrulerstomeasurecentimeters.Studentswill
haveconstructedbargraphstocompareunrelatedvariables,butnotnecessarily
continuousdata.Studentswillcompleteapreassessment,answeringthefollowquestions
toassesstheirabilitytoaccuratelymeasurewitharulerormeterstick:
1. Howlongisthewidthofyourdeskincm(tothenearestcm)?
2. Whatisthelengthofyourpencil(tothenearestcm)?
LessonBeginning:
Theteacherwillaskthestudentstocompletethepreassessmentdetailedabove.Teacher
willusetheinformationobtainedatthistimetoassessstudentspriorknowledge.
TeacherwillthendistributeputtyorPlayDohtostudents,andallowthemtoplaywithit
andobserveitsphysicalcharacteristics(15minutes).

Teacherwillputstudentsintopairsbypullingtheirnamesoutofacup.Teacher
willexplainactivitytostudents:
o Studentswillrotatebetweenthreecenterswiththeirpartnerstomeasure
threedifferentattributesoftheirputty:mass,heightofbounce,andlength
whenrolled.
o Whenmeasuringmass,studentswillturnthescaleon,placetheirputtyon
thescale,andrecordthedigitalvaluetothenearest1/10ofagram.
o Whenmeasuringheightofbounce,onepartnerwillholdameterstick
upright,withoneendrestingontheground.Hewilldroptheputtyfrom
thetopofthemeterstick,takingcarenottothrowitandthatitisdropped
fromthesameplace(thetopofthestick)eachtime.Theotherpartnerwill
getateyelevelwiththeheightofthebounce,approximately35cmfrom
theground.Studentswillrecordtheheightofthreetrials(bounces).

o Whenmeasuringlengthwhenrolled,studentswillrolltheirputtyoutto
thelongestpossiblelengthuntilitbreaks.Oncetheputtybreaks,students
willreattachthetwobrokenpiecesandmeasurethetotallengthin
centimeterstothenearestcm.
