ON A NEW NOTE
A new year, a new beginning. So much to look forward to with
GoodHomes by my side. This year, I have been successful in
rediscovering my creative side thanks to your magazine. In fact,
all the stylish ideas, that I have incorporated in my home, be it
the bedroom, bathroom or even the kitchen, have helped lend
to it a very interesting new look and feel. As the cold weather
takes over, I immerse my days in emulating the latest trends
[Design Trends 2015] for a fresh new look indoors. From warm
colour palettes to bursts of brightness, I am incorporating a
little bit of everything, to help me relax and enjoy the season.
Among your other features, I particularly enjoy the Anatomy of
a room page, that helps with ideas of furniture that works for
every space. Even the kitchen and bathroom Decor Diary helped
me give an unfussy and debonair look both spaces. It is often
the little things that make a big impact. Breaking The Fast was
an extremely interesting story as well. Finally the little creative
touches have indeed made me a good home manager. Thank you
for everything. Happy new year!

MOOD TO REVAMP
I have been a regular subscriber of GoodHomes magazine for
years now so, Ive finally decided to write to youll. I got so
many ideas from the style story spreads in your magazine for
when I did up my house and how, with the just the right use
of accessories in the right places, it can change the entire set
up and get up of a room! In fact, my home looks so different
and transformed now. I also really like the Launch Pad section
in your magazine as it keeps me updated with all the freshest
trends and the latest and cutting edge products available in the
market. The feature stories are timely and they are the reason I
know so much about the various use of colours, the mixing and
matching of fabric and textures and the placement of furniture.
One of your articles A Trendsetting Start in your previous issue
has been a favourite. I am now shopping for new furnishings
and furniture to help my home don a brand new avatar in the
New Year.

particularly fascinated with the idea of using old carpets and

rugs reminiscent of an era gone by, and now, I cannot wait to
welcome guests to flaunt the exceptional results. The simple
idea of adorning the home with exquisite vintage pieces and
bales of fabric in traditional prints against a backdrop of
neutral walls seemed just like the kind of idea I was looking
for. So ethnic and lovely. Imagine my relief! And if that
wasnt enough, I also got to choose from trends like retro
for my home. I am convinced that no corner in my home is

NEW, NEW!
Hello team GoodHomes. To start with I am a huge fan of the
magazine. The January issue was an eye-opener in terms of
the trends to look for in the New Year. It showcased very
interesting ideas to play with and make every corner of
your home exude a very stylish look. The trend cover story
featuring the trend predictions for 2015 is an interesting
feature that I would like to talk about. Especially the
play of geometrics and blue, which were my absolute
favorites. Recently I opted a serene blue makeover for my
living area and I was so glad to see such a pretty setup. It
compelled me even more to experiment with this idea in
my house. Last but not the least, the breakfast story was
another one that caught my fancy. I never imagined such
interesting themes for a breakfast party. Organising lunch
and dinners are passe, but executing a breakfast setting
is something very interesting. I have already decided to
plan my next kitty party over late breakfast and I am sure
it is going to be the best parties I throw yet. Thank you
GoodHomes...Im always inspired when I read the latest issue.

It was wonderful going through your letter, Simran.

Walking us through the bursting-with-life

flagship store of Chumbak, Bengaluru,
Shubra Chadda the product and design
head of the brand says, Chumbak began
with a desire to design souvenirs that went
beyond the defined gifts that people used
to take back from India. This desire led to
the creation of magnets, keychains, bobble
heads and a whole lot of products that
began to define the idea of gifting. Soon our
customers began to come out of every street
corner and everyone who loved to wear
India on their sleeve and with a desire to
stand out, became our customer.
Vivek Prabhakar and his wife, Shubhra
Chadda founded the Bengaluru-based
company in March 2010. Since both
Prabhakar and Shubhra love to travel,
they realised that while other countries

have souvenirs like fridge magnets, which

are affordable and easily available, India had
almost nothing to offer except the run-ofthe-mill Taj Mahal replicas and Pashmina
shawls. So, they decided to come up with
products that captured the essence of living
in India.
The flagship store designed by 4D,
the Bengaluru-based design house, offers
products labeled under four categories:
Apparel and accessories; stationery; home
and lifestyle, and travel and souvenirs.
Walking us through the design
evolution, the Shubhra says, We have
started to create a whole new design
language. While older designs continue to
remain popular, the gradual shift in language
is something we need to communicate
without alienating the old.

South Mumbai street is Nazia Merchants
brainchild, Caravan Hands, literally
meaning, travelling hands. The store is a
melting pot of design and art, with a series
of products and designs sourced from all
over the country.
Nazia, a former lawyer, decided to step
out of her corporate shoes and discover
her true calling in life. This dynamic
entrepreneur realised art and design
made her happy and in no time she was
at it, setting up her own design and art
store, celebrating Indian design in every
imaginable way. An interesting feature about
this store is that while the space houses the
works of upcoming, young artists, it also
pays homage to the bigger and established

names that we are all familiar with. Art

lovers, this ones definitely worth a visit!
What we also love about Caravan
Hands is the choice of products on display.
Nazia we hear, pays great attention to detail
when determining the merchandise being
showcased at her store. She understands the
psyche of both homemakers and working
women and keeping that in mind, she brings
about a distinct balance with the product
assortment that Caravan Hands has on
offer. Some of the products at the store are
procured from remote villages within India
and by that the young entrepreneur also
helps provide a brilliant platform to rural
artisans. And, interestingly, some of the
designs that are commissioned to them are
Nazias own. Go see to believe!

015 is all about colour. Dreamy,

relaxing meets dramatic, cool, and
happy. Those colours that lift the
spirits of the modern care-worn heart
and taking centrestage. Its all about
the colours that take you to gardens, and aqua
seas. That allow you to dream in your bedroom
and drink a relaxing tea with a friend.
The greys, blacks and browns of Zen
quietude are not so prevalent in the New Year
that promises to be one of optimism. That
feeling spreads over the home and office. When
juxtaposed with pure white, these colours get
another personality all together.
Furniture takes on colour too, with bright
and brilliant paints and polishes on woods that
might echo the colours on furnishings.

OLIVE & AUBERGINE

When you take olive and mix it with aubergine,
rust and a pale mint to give it the pale Henri
Rousseau colours, it takes on a nearly surreal
look of tranquillity. Botanical greens and
cerulean blues splashed in warmer doses with
accents of deep aubergine, rust, plum and pale
mint augment this combination.
Blue mixed with classic green takes on a
fresh appeal. Then mix this with shades of blue
and green to take the look into the entire room
you use this combo with.

GOODEARTH

PASTELS
Pastels make a silent comeback with aubergine
entering the orange and green palette
accompanied by dashes of aquamarine. All this
in pastels.
Pale grey, nearly white when juxtaposed with
white, looks nearly like a cousin of white and sets
off the tone of calm neutral colours. The room
then forms a calming backdrop for dramatic art
and sculpture. Imagine it in your mind?
When youre going colourful in the coming
year, play with Citrus green, turquoise, peony and
rose pink and classic purple. Different areas done
in these colours, in the same room will wake up a
den, a morning room, an entertainment space, an
advertising office or even a teenagers bedroom.

COMBINING BLUE
Deep blue mixed with white is a classic
combination but is making a big comeback.
Blues of all shades and kinds that were highly
fashionable in the late 18th Century Regency
period England are making a comeback. This
atmospheric colour that can create the effect
of cool, equanimous and calming spaces from
a refreshing bathroom to a calm bedroom, a
dramatic living room and a sophisticated dining
space is the most tranquil colour that manages
to multitask as vibrant and dramatic as well.
Combine this with white and you have a
winning space. White, in striking patterns from
checks to stripes, can be mixed on fabrics, walls,
tiles, china and work brilliantly without interfering
in your blue scheme. White also makes a natural
background as is evidenced in Wedgewood,
Sevres, Chinese and Japanese porcelain that have
used classic white and blue with stunning motifs.
Permutations of blue with white in cushions,
stencilling, wall paper, flowers, woodwork,
mouldings allow so little to get tired of and are
both comfortable and comforting to look at.
A bright cheerful blue and white striped
wallpaper provides a strong, graphic background,
echoes the theme and yet, breaks the sameness
of the colours in different tones. Royal blue and
white checked or Provencal cotton fabrics for table
cloths add a soft touch. Blue and white porcelain,
while they echo the scheme, with their floral
patterns add chutzpah to the design.

An interesting mixture of cobalt blue with

turquoise forms a brilliant combination like
contrasts of light and shade, brilliance and
sobriety. You can introduce 2015s favourite
child Olive to break the monotony and see
how it fits in without shouting for attention. A
full blast of olives from trees, indoor plants and
creepers not only accentuates the calming effect
but also peps up the colour schemes.
Blue spans an amazing range of colour from
lavender to delicate duck egg blue on the one
hand to regal purple and brightest turquoise
to dramatic electric blue, and when teamed
together the possibilities of design just snowball.
You could also mix shades and relatives of blue
like azure, cobalt, teal, aubergine to create nearly
a faceted brilliance for the room.
Deep midnight blue and the palest
aquamarine also team up for a fresh lively colour
scheme. Apply a lightish blue as the main colour
theme over walls and floor so that the room
appears larger and cooler. Luminous blues and
yellows are ideal for creating a Mediterranean
splash to a room. Colour washes of golden yellow
to the wall will add a rich depth of colour to set
off the blues.
When you team blues and their cool airiness
with the warm optimism of yellow for an
upbeat colour scheme, the effect is buoyant and
infallible. You could add some black and white
pictures to break the monotony of blue.

FRIENDS OF FABRICS
Colour

Y Colour is key in coordinating fabrics. It

provides continuity and helps tie the decor
scheme together.
Y Once youve selected the main colour
for your home, coordinate the soft
furnishings with a second colour that
matches or closely-blends with the primary
shade. This will give your room a unified
contemporary appearance.
Y When choosing furnishings, remember,
the eye tends to prefer the lighter colours
closer to the ceiling in height, slightly
darker ones around the middle, and the
darkest colours lowest, closest to the floor.
You must feel free to break this rule or
any other if youre working on specfic

Y Patterns enhance themes. In fact,
the simplest way to sort your theme is to
categorise the patterns using adjectives
you can choose your furnishings accordingly
and group cohesive visual stories together.

Texture

A combination of textures have a way

of creating an eclectic interior. The
stimulating and interesting contrast of
rough with smooth (tweed and polished
cotton) and heavy with light (velvet and
sheer) has been met with great success in
design circles.
Y Smooth, refined textures grouped
together are ideal for a formal setting.
These include damasks, refined sheers,
satin, antique satin, velvet, brocade,
crepe, moir and even lace.
Y Rougher textures will give you
a more casual, earthy effect. Fabrics
such as tweed, casement, canvas,
leather, houndstooth, corduroy, velour,
flannel, jute, suede cloth and plaid.

SCALE & PROPORTION

ne of the most successful ways to

create drama in a space is to play with
scale. Dimensions of proportion and scale
are important for balance. Proportion is the
relation between sizes; and scale usually
refers to size in relation to the space it is
placed in to me, scale is visual size.
You can do this in two ways work
it with the size of the objects in the room
or figure it out with the prints, patterns or
motifs on those objects. That brings me
back, full circle, to fabrics!
Variation in scale throughout a room is
important. But, drastic differences can be
unsuccessful. Layers keep the decor from
becoming flat; and to layer successfully,

want it to come across as showy. Would love

Anuja, it is absolutely true that an

apartment should definitely look
swanky but also be liveable, comfortable
and be a place you can return to from work
and play to relax, recreate, enjoy and
recoup from the day.
Id recommend that you first work at
bubble planning, which means that you
allocate areas in the home for various
activities. Earmark rooms for areas like
living room, kitchen, dining room,
entertainment room, master bedroom,
guest bedroom, den and work space and
other areas you might like to have.
Once this is done, go about planning

the look of the space, the themes of each

area, or then the theme that the entire
home might follow. This helps you in
choosing colours, furniture, art, artefacts
and furnishings. Wall paints, colours for
furnishings, the look and feel of doors and
windows follow this broad scheme, theme
and look for the apartment.
Some pointers that ensure a beautiful,
comfortable space are thoughts that I shall
share to give you not just a place that looks
great, but feels great....
Choose furniture, not only looking
out for trend and style but importantly

SONYA SURI
Interior Designer

I want to experiment with new colour and pattern

combinations in 2015. I also want to travel and find design
inspiration from new cultures.
Sonya is deeply inspired by Indian fabrics and colours and is keen on
translating their style in decor this year. She also loves the warmth of
wood and will be using it in abundance this year. Keep things fresh,
she says. Design should live and breathe.

KARTHIK
VAIDYANATHAN
Karthik Vaidyanathan, Founder
& Principal Designer,
Varnam

With fun, functionality as

an element is something I
want to continue infusing
in my work.
Karthik believes that in
todays stressful times,
consumers are most happy
to see products that not
only bring a smile to their
faces but, are also functional. In
fact, the designer has come up
with a series of functional home
products. The Gyaani Goobe
(the wise owl in Kannada) series,
inspired by the owl, incorporates
a night lamp, a pen stand, even
tableware.

SHRUTI JAIPURIA
Founder & Creative Director, Maia Design

I would like to work with more

artisans to conceptualise, prototype and
fabricate unexpected elements in decor.
Shruti believes that designing a space is like designing an experience.
With that she also lays emphasis on intelligent layouts, lighting, void
spaces, materials, colour, music and scent. She says, I have found,
that often a hint of drama and curation of unexpected elements
within an interior can add a layer of surprise and freshness to design.
It is uplifting and engaging. Case in point, The Black Rabbit,
(facing page) a series of 16 bells that Shruti has designed using
polycarbonate. Each bell has been handcast and painted.

ANDREA CORSINI
Principal Designer,
Andrea Corsini Interiors

My resolution is to marry the

subtle colours of nature with
vintage and bring them to
play in modern spaces.
Andrea suggests experimenting
with a bunch of unusual colours.
He says, Work with dust colours
and moss green. Marry it with the
richness of velvet and watch the
space come alive and unfold into
a dramatic narrative.

LAURA HAMMETT
Director & Co-Founder, Laura Hammett Ltd.

Navy is a big trend for both traditional and

contemporary schemes and features in almost
all of my upcoming projects.
Laura feels that this colour tone is going to be the next big
thing this year. Citing an example from a project shes working
on, she says, Weve used navy blue silk wallpaper in the dining
room teamed with bronze finishes, smoked glass and dark timber
to create richness. Its a great accent colour when used against an
elegant backdrop of either warm champagne/ bronze tones or cool
greys. Another favourite combination is navy and amber, which works
in more informal rooms such as family rooms and cinematic spaces.

KALYANI GANAPATHY
Artist

Creating spaces which have my

individual stamp is something
I am keen on this year.
This year, the artist is focussing on
rediscovering herself through DIY. Since
Kalyani loves hand-woven fabric, she is
going to create new handmade cushions, curtains, bedspreads
unique to her style. She adds, Creating spaces which have my
individual stamp is something I am keen on this year.

KRSNA MEHTA
Creative Head and Owner, India Circus

This year is all about pantone

colours. Also, Im going with offbeat
and contemporary over the classics.
Krsna has a volley of interesting recommendations
for different areas of the home. He says, Shades of olive, especially
on cabinets, will be popular in 2015, which is warm, organic and
neutral for almost any other colour and design you pair it with.
Design-heavy prints including on sofa sets and chairs; coloured walls;
vibrant rich cushions; heavy design-inspired Persian rugs; mixing
colours like purples, and vivid green Ikats with aqua and turquoise, to
keep things fresh and a little more subtle for your bedroom.

Her work is innovative and few

says, My designs have been

it to its truest form. With the
new season, I want to make the
process more energy efficient
and keep my designs lean.

RAADESH SHETTY
Owner, The Purple Turtle

2015 inspires me to create and source

products made in India and also encourage
people to shop locally.
Raadesh believes that there is so much colour and craft to
work with in India that it inspires one to take risks and be
bold. He adds, I enjoy mixing vintage with contemporary,
and experimenting with colours. The idea is to embrace
your own style and be at ease.

I wish to design

a perfect balance of the
Indian craft with the
international aesthetic.
In Amritas opinion, fresh decor
is always welcome. She says,
Its all about keeping our spaces
lively yet minimalistic, to layer
with print and use colour in
accents and art. I adore neutral
bases like whites, greys and
natural colours and believe in
using a lot of handmade, Indian
handcrafted products.

LAKSHMI ARVIND
Blogger, Celebrations Decor

In 2015, I look forward to a year where I will be

travelling and exploring local markets, combining
colours, patterns, materials and creating textured
looks with textiles and finishes.
The best mantra for an instant makeover would be to paint a
wall and add some plants. Styling the dining table is going to be
an inspiration that I would like to take forward in 2015. Flowers are
an indulgence, always worth having they dont have to be expensive
arrangements. Jasmines, desi gulabs and lotuses will make the home
special in 2015. In fact Lakshmi looks forward to a year trending towards
organic and handmade products.

SANDEEP KHOSLA
Founder and Principal Architect, Khosla Associates

In home design, I am prompted to explore

more concepts of open-plan layouts, where
spaces are fluid, filled with light and air, and
are not demarcated into strict functions.
Multi-functional and open-plan spaces are quite the rage today.
We chanced upon the architects Library House project and witnessed
this trend amply demonstrated. Sandeep says, The library combines
various activities for the family and provides an anchor to the house.
It is a casual space where the family congregates, where carefully
demarcated areas for lounging, studying, listening to music, playing
the piano, and entertaining are carved out in an open-plan layout.

PROF K JAISIM
Principal and Founder, Fountainhead

I hope that 2015 will see the

re-emergence of a play with
form and structure and the
movement of spaces.
In Architect K Jaisims opinion,
It is not environmental but
intellectual pollution that has
corrupted architecture. Creation in its
purest form has been relegated to the back
burner while eyes turn to treatments and
layers of makeup that make up spaces and
facades. The architect looks forward to
change, as do we!

I am deeply inspired by the pristine splendour

of nature. From blue skies to sunny hues, even
refreshing floral shades, its all I need to transform a
dull abode into an exciting reverie.
For Raseel, nothing spells inspiration better than nature herself.
She says, Nature signifies opulence and resilience it is the
definitive resource for inspiration. Surround yourself with the living
splendour of floral profusion as the refreshingly vibrant pink and
orange accents of Casa Pop pack an edgy punch. From incidental
pieces of furniture to canvases; soft furnishings in botanical
cushions and accessories, to its depiction on breakfast trays; the
faultless beauty that is explored in the outdoors, is expressed in
interior design to tranform it beyond compare.

Gayatri Popat is

love how she elevates her work
in the realm of furnishings

Rich, decorative simplicity

is definitely going to be the

VIVEK RADHAKRISHNAN

I intend to work on entire

new approach, but an exciting one!
Vivek notices a clear shift in consumer purchase with
more and more clients wanting their homes furnished with products,
entirely from Kynkyny. Also, as someone who isnt particularly a fan of
trends, he says, I dont follow trends. I always try to create objects that
are timeless things that I love today and will still love in 20 years.

SIMRAN
DHALIWAL
Interior Stylist & Blogger

For 2015, I have

decided to experiment...
with colours, fabrics,
textures and patterns,
around the home.
Simran feels, this will be a
creatively-challenging year
and she intends to make the
most of it. Talking about her
immediate plans, she says, It
starts with painting a wall that
runs along my staircase, in
black! I want to explore colour
and pattern coordination in the
same area. So think print on
print and bright colours used in
sync. The process of setting up
or decorating a home is never
complete. So we should do one
thing at a time, one corner at a
time and bring a room together
slowly. Happy experimenting
in 2015!

SUNITA NAIR
Principal Designer, Studio Amaya

My decor resolution is to
personalise spaces.
The New Year heralds resolution. In todays digital world, too many
of our memories are stored on memory cards and Facebook walls,
says Sunita. She recommends making use of the innumerable photo
printing sites to order prints of ones favourite photos and use them
to adorn walls. She adds, Make your space warm and inviting with
a family gallery of your cherished moments. Family rooms, stairways
or dining rooms create a focal point with a group of photos
either displayed on walls or arranged over ledges. Coffee tables and
consoles also are a great way to display your photos.

TARA KHAN
Creative Director, LBOF

I resolve to dress up my coffee table. Because,

honestly, nobody deserves to be put on display
without a liberal dose of style and fun.
Tara suggests small and easy changes around the home in the
New Year. The coffee table, for now, seems to have caught her
fancy. She advises, Start with a tray. Consider it a foundation for
a chic coffee table. Buy a nice lacquered piece or simply give an
existing one a makeover by adding a preppy pattern insert. Next,
pile on the well-curated coffee table books. Remember, bold +
bright always equals beautiful. My accessorising philosophy pivots
around the principle of balancing form and function.

ART ALERT
Strong pieces of furniture with elegant stripes and pops of colour can add fun to a setting. Opt for simple straight lines in furniture and then play
with the treatments to get the desired looks. Pick a theme for the room and work with it, black is perhaps the best base for any sort of artwork.

Wall art is a great mood setter, we recommend you do some thinking before
investing in it.

Black is often considered inauspicious. It is

especially not a colour most people want on the
walls of their house, let alone the entrance. Its
the right choice of furniture and accents that can

The thought was to create a casual, open space with natural light

REAL HOME

While designing the home, we have created a concept of uninterrupted spaces. The living room glides gracefully into a small seating area created for the
family to enjoy the greenery. The verandah outside the living room was initially an open one, which we have now enclosed with glass to cut off the noise from
outside. Initially we had problems growing plants here due to the salty water, so we had to treat the water and create the garden the way it is. Plants have
also helped in cutting the noise and reducing the amount of pollution from the cars, says Alpana.

their own privacy. The house has a flow that fuses one space into
the other. Also, the whole house was done in exposed concrete, but
over the years, it was painted and plastered over, shares Alpana.
The style is classic contemporary which mixes the new and
classic. The interiors were done by my parents and since then the
design has evolved. Initially, the living room furniture was done by
Janice Croft, a German furniture designer. The furniture has been
mainly custom-built and design elements continue to be added. Lot
of pieces are from Casa Paradox and done by my sister Raseel Gujral
Ansal. All of us are involved in designing the house which makes it
special and personal. Its between my parents and me that we keep
on adding and subtracting things. The house is accessorised with
lots of antiques, small bronzes, glass paintings, Tanjore paintings,
lot of old paisley and old Belgium glass mirrors in the dining room.
Alpanas bedroom again has a distinct style. A bedroom is your
haven but not a space to spend your whole day or entertain. Its a
private space where you spend time for yourself. As my bedroom
overlooks the garden, I dont feel that I am in the heart of the city.
Also, my sensitivity towards interiors is very earthy, so my bedroom
is not ultra modern. I am an Art Deco freak and love warm colours
brown, beige, ochre. I love books and read a lot, so have placed
my books around as they make me feel comfortable.

great building must begin with the

unmeasurable, must go through
measurable means when it is being
designed and in the end must be
unmeasurable, Louis Kahn once
said. And, the Rappaport Residence in Malibu,
owned by real estate magnate, entrepreneur
and art collector Kurt Rappaport resonates his
sentiment to the T! Architect Scott Mitchell
has unleashed his design prowess to lend to this
home spread over a whopping six acres and
overlooking the magnanimous Pacific Ocean
what we call an unforgettable quality.
The homes monumental linear lines
combined with Scotts strong, humanistic
design sensibilities have created an Edenesque feel. This extraordinary composition of
elements mirrors the spirit and energy of the
incredibly young couple who reached out to
the A-list architect to design their home. Scott

Mitchell says, The juxtaposition of the mass

of the concrete monoliths and the delicate steel
and glass window and door system creates the
fundamental psychological device that drives an
emotional experience.
Floors and ceilings of white oak with antique
granite pavers in the outdoor areas lend texture
and warmth to the starkly modern scheme.
The architectural language of the 15,000sqft
residence encompasses a sweeping living room, a
master suite with a luxurious bathroom, a wing
of bedrooms for Rappaports children, a lower
level with a game room and a home theatre and
an adjacent pavilion containing two guest suites.
Outside, the 168-foot-long infinity pool is said
to be the longest residential swimming pool in
California. I thought it was important to use the
pool as a conduit to connect the Ocean beyond to
the structures. The length of the pool is a response
to the length of the horizon and the width of the

Armchairs by Denise Kuriger and vintage Ross Littell woven-leather lounge chairs flank the ceramic table by Michael
Smolcich. An interesting artwork by KAWS (facing page) hangs above the fireplace. There is a steady play of light in the
space, filtering in through the various architectural wonders created in there.

Scott Mitchell Studio was founded in

1999, when Scott was commissioned
to design his first project the
renovation of a Beverly Hills home.
Scott has since developed an
extensive architectural, interiors
and landscape design portfolio
across the U.S. and internationally,
including houses and estates,
restaurants and retail spaces. The
architect is inspired by the works
of architect Louis Kahn and aims to
create buildings with soul.

PROJECT BRIEF
This Malibu estate overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Long,
horizontal forms, tall, vertical monoliths of concrete and
an expressive use of material create a monumental, yet
unpretentious building.

86 GOODHOMES FEBRUARY 2015

Accenting the largely monochromatic palette is a collection of vivid contemporary artworks that one finds in profusion in this home. Board-formed concrete with its
finely grained surface, and distressed white oak create a robust sense of materiality appropriate to the textured cliffside landscape the home inhabits.

The 168-foot swimming pool lined in black granite tiles, offering unobstructed views of the Pacific is a sight to behold. The endless pool is an architectural marvel
and is considered to be the longest residential swimming pool in California.

property and it was very important to us to match
the colour of the pool with the Ocean, Scott says.
What is interesting is the collaborative
effort, given how Scott brought in New York
interior designer Denise Kuriger, to contribute
to the architectural design. Indoors, we love the
assortment of interesting Art Deco pieces, quirky
vintage finds furnishings with an industrial edge
and complementary 18th-century antiques
all united by their emphasis on clean lines and
understated forms.
A recurring element in the decor is the
owners homage to Jean-Michel Frank, a

1920s and 30s designer known best for

his minimalistic interiors decorated with plainlined but sumptuous furniture. Denise and
Scott have, through this project, paid a fitting
tribute to the French maestro with a parchmentand-walnut waterfall-edge desk in the study;
an oak centre table near the entryway, and, a
pool table that they outfitted with a variation
on Franks signature pineapple legs in one of
the game rooms. With a refined sense of order,
scale, material and structure, Scotts design
transcends the ordinary. The views are needless
to say spellbinding.
