APPLY FOR DOCTORAL EDUCATION


Doctoral degrees oered by the University of Helsinki are of a high quality and enjoy international
recognition. Doctoral graduates from the University of Helsinki possess excellent skills and knowledge for
research work and other demanding expert positions in both Finnish and international businesses and
organisations. Would you like to be one of them? Faculties and departments organise doctoral education
in the form of systematic and goal-oriented doctoral programmes, which oer training that can be
included in doctoral degrees completed at one or several faculties. A doctoral degree may, as decided by
the faculty, include courses and modules oered by one or several doctoral programmes and doctoral
schools. A doctoral degree awarded by the University of Helsinki consists of a doctoral dissertation and
related research as well as postgraduate studies of a scope of 6080 credits (4060 credits in degrees in
medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine). The postgraduate studies include courses and modules in
the students research Zelds as well as more general studies that enhance their expertise.

HOW TO APPLY
The right to pursue doctoral studies must be applied for from the relevant faculty. Please note that the
procedures and admissions requirements may vary from one faculty to another.
Some faculties require that you have found a research group or at least a supervisor for your thesis
before sending the application to the faculty. However, you always need to apply to the faculty even if
you would have an acceptance letter from the research group. It is the faculty that gives the right to
pursue the doctoral degree.
Please contact the administrative person in charge of doctoral students admissions before leaving your
application. The administration has the most recent information/regulations for the application process
as well as of the timetable of the admitting governing body.

An applicant for doctoral education is a student who has a higher academic degree from a higher
education institution: i.e. the student is a second cycle degree holder.
In a two-cycle system of studies, the student Zrst completes a Bachelor's degree: this takes about three
years. After the Bachelor's degree, it usually takes two years for the student to be awarded with the
Master's degree. The Masters degree must include a Masters thesis.
At the University of Helsinki, the term 'doctorate' refers to a PhD, and 'doctoral education' to
postgraduate studies towards a PhD.

DOCTORAL SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMMES

All doctoral students at the University of Helsinki belong to a doctoral programme. The doctoral
programmes oer Zeld-speciZc education and supervision for doctoral students.
The doctoral schools, for their part, oer general career skills training and develop doctoral education
in their Zelds in collaboration with the doctoral programmes and the faculties responsible for the
programmes.

ONE PLACE RULE


One place rule will be extended to cover all education leading to a university degree. This change will
aect programmes that begin on August 1, 2016 or later. This rule of one study place per term
concerns all degree programme application options.
The main points are:

In one term, you may accept only one study place at a higher education institution leading to a
university degree.

This change aects also postgraduate studies of the licentiate and the doctor.

A place of study granted through a university-to-university transfer within Finland is not governed by
this rule.

Accordingly, you may be completing several on-going degree programmes simultaneously, but only if
your admission to these programmes has been granted in dierent terms.
