ONE HOUR LESSON PLAN, NOUN CLAUSES


Proficiency level:
- Upper Intermediate EFL Class
Objectives: Students are able to
- identify noun clauses
- use noun clauses that act as compliments in writing
- use noun clauses that act as compliments in conversation
Previous lessons: Students have learned
- the concept of clauses
- adjective clauses.
Materials:
- A list of examples of noun clauses
- A handout with a list of words provided for them to practice noun clauses
- A supplement from Azar Grammar on noun clauses
- Some blank paper for students to write

Stage
Warm-Up

Procedures
T writes objectives on the board before the class.
T greets the class and takes attendance.
T shares with Ss what he/she likes to do on weekends and asks
students to share theirs. (The small talks content will be used to
practice noun clauses later).
T reviews adjective clauses

5 mins

Introduction

T informs Ss what they are going to learn, noun clauses, and what the
three objectives are for todays lesson.
T gives handout #1 and writes Noun clauses act as nouns.
T asks a rhetorical question, Does that mean noun clauses can be
subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, and objects of a proposition?
T has Ss look at those examples on handout #1.
T explains the term complements, the focus of this lesson

15 mins Presentation

T uses what Ss have shared earlier about the activities they like to do
on weekends to make statements and questions such as:
T-Ss (T writes sentences that have noun clauses in on the board)
I think that [Ss name] likes toon weekends.
[Ss name], do you remember what I like toon weekends?
Does [Ss name] like toon weekends?
I am not sure that [Ss name] like toon weekends.

15 mins Guided Practice

T gives Ss hangout #2
T explains the list of verbs that take compliments that or whether/if
T leads Ss to practice question #1
Ss are encouraged to offer a variety of answers to question #1
Ss complete the questions on their own; they are asked to write at least
2 sentences for each prompt. (5-7 minutes)
T walks around to see if Ss have any questions or are confused.
T assigns students to write their answers on the board.
T goes over what Ss have written on the board.

15 mins Communicative

T gives Ss handout #3
T explains the activity and divides the class into groups of 3-4 Ss
T demonstrates how to carry out the activity by showing the class her
own 4 statements and have Ss ask her questions, Is it really true that
you?
Ss get into their groups, write their own 4 statements and practice by
asking, Is it really true that?
Ss report to the whole class by saying, Im amazed that
T reviews noun clauses to see if they are able to identify them
T assigns HW and informs Ss that they will practice more on noun
clauses next class.

Noun clauses can be:
Subjects
Direct Objects
Indirect Objects
Objects of a Preposition
Complements There are many verbs that take complements
introduced by that or whether/if.

Examples:
Subject
Whoever thought of that idea is a genius.
Direct Object
On weekends, we can do whatever we want.
Indirect Object
Be sure to send whoever interviewed you a thank-you note.
Object of a Preposition
You may choose a gift for whomever you want.
Complement
My greatest asset is that I am a hard worker.
I dont know whether/if she will come.

Writing Exercise: Make complete sentences with noun clauses by using that or whether/if and
underline noun clauses.
Example:
Prompt: Are they up to something good?
Answer: I am not sure whether/if they are up to something good.

Prompt: Is the daughter teaching her mom how to bake cookies?


Answer:

Prompt: Is she waiting for someone picking her up?


Answer:

Prompt: Did those campers get a good night sleep?


Answer:

Prompt: Are those houses going to be all right?
