Questions

1. A cyclic process operates with air following the following steps:

- 2.3 g of the gas contained in a perfectly insulated chamber are reversibly
compressed from a maximum volume V1 to a volume V2, where the
compression ratio is r = 3 (r = V1 / V2).
- The insulator is then removed from the chamber and the gas is brought into
contact with a thermal reservoir at constant temperature. The system is
isobarically heated to a state 3, whose volume is equal to the initial (V1).
- Finally the air is cooled with constant volume until the temperature returns
to its initial state (T1).
The initial conditions of the system are: absolute pressure = 100 kPa. T = 17
C and a total volume of 1,900 cm3.
A) Make a complete block diagram of the thermodynamic process: include all the
information exposed in the problem.
B) Calculate the temperature and pressure in states 2 and 3 of the air system.
C) The net heat absorbed and assigned per unit mass as well as the net work done
per unit mass per cycle.
D) The variation of entropy in the system and in the universe at each step.
Consider that the heating takes place by contacting the air with a tank at constant
temperature T3 and cooling by contact with the environment at T1.
E) Entropy generated in the complete cycle.
2. A rigid tank of 0.3 m 3 is completely filled with water with quality equal to 0
and temperature equal to 150 C. At the bottom of the tank is a valve which
allows the exit of half of the mass originally contained. The tank is kept at
constant temperature thanks to the transfer of energy from a source that is at
200 C. Determine.
A) The amount of heat transferred
B) The total entropy generated in the process
