Delivered over to Gentiles in Jerusalem the most explicit in gospels

THE GOSPEL OF MARK

NT352 FALL 2016

The Triumphal
Entry 1-11
Mount of Olives 1-3
Why is the Mount of Olives so significant here and in Eschatology?
Jesus interactions at the Mount of Olives has special significance:
Jesus announces destruction (Titus) of Jerusalem and weeps (Lk 19:41-44)
Jesus gave apocalyptic instruction on the end times from here (Matt 24:3)
Jesus ascended to heaven from here and will return to here (Acts 1:9-11)

Why did the colt need to be one never sat on before? Four major reasons:
Custom that only unused animals were appropriate for sacred use
This is fulfillment of prophecy regarding Zions king (Zec 9:9)
Symbol of peace came in humility to offer peace with God by the cross
Second coming on white horse to make war and judge (Rev 19:11)

The Triumphal
Entry 1-11
Day of Visitation 4-11
They found it all just as Jesus had said and gave the answer He instructed
The crowd worships as Israels hope enters with royal welcome (2 Kgs 9:13)
Jesus visits the temple to inspect it before cleansing it in divine zeal

The Fig Tree and the

Temple 12-26
Jesus Curses the Fig Tree 12-14
This is problematic for some scholars = easily understood as a living parable
Jesus (God) was hungry for fruit from his fig tree (Israel) = finds only leaves
Context = Jesus just went to the temple and found only leaves (v.11-12)
Not the season for the full fig but leaves mean its edible buds are present

Jesus was seeking

fruit in April, the
month of Passover,
when fig trees
would have been
blossoming.

The Fig Tree and the

Temple 12-26
Jesus Purges the Temple 15-19
Second time in the temple in two days earlier found it lacking (Mk 11:11)
Temple business was lucrative for Scribes and Pharisees = burdened people
Cleansing temple His 2nd messianic act this week = prophetic (Mal 3:1-3)

The Fig Tree and the

Temple 12-26
The Withered Fig Tree 20-26
Disciples are surprised at the destruction and what seems to be so sudden
The lesson on faith is more incidental than connected to the tree

Authority of
Jesus Challenged 27-33
Jesus is Challenged 27-28
The components of the Sanhedrin who were hostile to Jesus and Apostles:
Chief priests represented the people before God, offered sacrifices
Scribes teachers (lawyers, experts) and transcribed Old Testament
Elders originally 70 (Moses) their traditions became superior to Torah

They challenge his authority over what He has done in Jerusalem this week

Authority of
Jesus Questioned 27-33
Religious Leaders Questioned 29-33
Is Johns baptism from heaven or from man (Gods authority or own following)?
They did not discuss what would be right or true but what was safe
These leaders did not truly lead they followed the approval of the public = Trap!

Parable of
the Vineyard 12:1-12
The Vineyard of God 1
N.B. Archeologists have found records of such disputes with this scenario
Old Testament typology that clearly refers to God and Israel (c.f. Is 5:1-7)
Land Owner the Lord who labored to plant them in the land
The vineyard Israel the people, placed in the land
Tenants Religious leaders (all of which are after Him)

Servants sent to verify and collect the fruit of the vineyard = beaten and killed:
Elijah was forced into the desert (1 Kings 19:1-10)
Isaiah sawn in two (Heb 11:37; The Martyrdom of Isaiah 5:1ff)
Zechariah stoned to death by the altar (2 Chron 24:20-22)

Vineyard
Vineyard
near the Tel
of Lachish.

WATCHTOWER
A watchtower
in the hills of
Samaria.

Parable of
the Vineyard 1-12
The Son of God 6-12
With all the mistreatment of his servants, God shows mercy by sending the Son
Destroy the tenants and give the vineyard over to Gentiles AD 70 to Rome
Knowing the parable is about them (v.12), they still try to kill the Son

Religious Leaders
Come to Trap 13-27
Paying Taxes to Caesar 13-17
Pharisees and Herodians sent to catch him off guard in his words and trap him
Note the qualities they acknowledge about Jesus - true of Him but not true of them
With the question on taxes, the Pharisees and Herodians pretend to have a dispute
Jesus makes his point with a denarius notice he didnt have a denarius to use!
They understood that the coins were property of the one whose image they bore

(top) Silver
denarius with a
portrait of the
Roman emperor
Tiberius
(A.D. 14-37).

(bottom) A coin
depicting the
emperor Nero
(A.D. 54-68).

Religious Leaders
Come to Trap 13-27
Marriage in the Resurrection 18-23
Sadducees were liberal theologians and part of Sanhedrin but only accepted Torah
They refer to the Torah for a very unique scenario - levirate law (Deut 25:5-10)
This question had stumped Pharisees for years imagine disciples interest now!

Religious Leaders
Come to Trap 13-27
God of the Living 24-27
Note two reasons for their grave error (lit. wandered far off) usually these:
They do not know the scriptures what God has said
They do not know the power of God what God has done and can or will do

Neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels in heaven what?
This does not mean angels are or we will be genderless as some assume
Marriage state does not continue after resurrection no procreation

Jesus goes to Moses and the bush (Exodus 3:6) = Sadducees only used Torah
