Social Studies- Here Comes the Iron Horse

Pattern pictures in envelopes (6 groups)

Students will understand how Utah's history has been shaped by
many diverse people, events, and ideas.
o Objective 1
Describe the historical and current impact of various cultural
groups on Utah.
Wyoming common core standards:
WY.4. Content Standard: Time, Continuity and Change
Students demonstrate an understanding of the people, events,
problems, ideas, and cultures that were significant in the history of our
community, state, nation and world.
o 4.3. Benchmark:
Students describe the chronology of exploration, immigration
and settlement of Wyoming.
Essential Question:
How did the Transcontinental Railroad shape the Wyoming Territory?
What was it like to be an immigrant working on the railroad in the 1800s?
Personal Objective:
Gain understanding of what my students already know about the railroad in
Wyoming, and what I need to teach them throughout this unit.
Pre-Assessment: 2 minutes
Have students when coming to the carpet, think about what
questions were on the assessment they took yesterday.
Think about connections we can make or background knowledge
that we have to help us with the activity today.
Engage: 2 minutes

I was thinking about how we have been looking at patterns in math and I
thought we could look for patterns in social studies too with this next
activity.
Teacher role
o Spark interest in students to look for patterns in the next
activity.
Student role
o Listen to teacher to get ideas about how to look for patterns
during the activity.
Explore: 10 minutes
In your pod, I want you to sort the photos in these envelopes. I want you to
put the photos in groups that you see a pattern. There is no right or wrong
pattern you find. I want to see what your group is thinking and the
connections you see in the pictures. There has to be more than one pattern
group, and each group must have at least two pictures in them. Quietly talk

with your group and then tape the patterns on your construction paper like
my example up here.

Student role
o Work with group to find patterns
o Be able to explain what pattern you see, and how those
photos tie into each other
o Deep thinking about not just the photo, but what it means
Explain: 8 minutes
Groups did great finding patterns Now what I want to do, is have each group
present one pattern they found and explain the connections you found. Your
group has one minute to present.
Teacher role
o Ask groups questions to gain understanding of their thinking
in this activity
Student role
o Actively listen and be able to present findings from the
activity.
Extend: 5 minutes
So we all had similarities and differences in our patterns. What I want you to
do now is I am going to hand out an exit ticket. There is two questions I
want you to answer. (See attachment for questions). On your own, use the

information you learned or didnt learn from today to fill out the questions.
We will learn more about the Railroad in our next lesson.
Teacher role
o Help students with more prompting questions if they cannot
fill out exit ticket.
o Keep the environment quiet for all students to finish their
work.
Student role
o Use prior knowledge or reflect on this lesson to fill out the exit
ticket.
o Use ideas and write down their own questions, not the
thoughts of others in the classroom.
Evaluate: After lesson
Look at exit tickets and see what students thinking are. Use the exit tickets
along with assessment to better plan on upcoming lesson materials
Teacher role
o Use data from student work to help prepare for next lessons
in the unit to see if any are struggling at the beginning.
Student role
o Fill out exit ticket from the lesson to help teacher know what
information needs to be covered in upcoming lessons.
Accommodations for students with special needs
More time to complete task if necessary.
Visual Aids for those who need help.
Explain using different word choices to explain questions on the exit
ticket.
Accommodations for students of ELL
For ELL, we will try to use pictures and gestures to help students
understand the lesson and what should be accomplished during the
lesson.
Partner work will help with confusion, peers talking through what
needs to be done.

Students should be proficient, basic, or below basic with the information
covered in activity in the classroom today.
Questions will be worth 2 points each. For these two response questions, I
will be looking mainly on content and complete sentences. I will look at the
information and be able to add or remove content of my lesson for the next
day to best fit where my students are.
Data will be reviewed from this unit to see how the class did as a
whole, and how children did separately.

The exit ticket will have a total of 4 points


To be proficient (3)
Will only be able to miss 0-1 points
Fall between 80-100%
To be basic (2)
Will only be able to miss 1-2 points
Fall between 60-75%
To be below basic (1)
Will only be able to miss 3-4 points
Fall between 5-55%
Getting a 0 is impossible, unless the student misses all the questions.

For the knowledge I want to gain from students, points will be awarded for
correctly looking at what the question asks students to do. This will show me
who gained from this unit, who was consistent from the unit, and who
regressed from this unit.
Data will be reviewed from this unit to see how the class did as a
whole, and how children did separately.
