Im just another zit-faced freak with a gun. Man, I had no idea I was this evil. And then it
makes me wonder. Do evil people know theyre evil? Or do they just think theyre doing the
right thing?
I think about Justice. I think he fooled me. I think he brainwashed me. If he was so righteous,
why wasnt he in the bank with me? (38)
1) Zits says this quote after he kills a group of people in a bank, is shot and killed, and wakes
up in another mans body. He is feeling intense guilt over his actions, and is questioning if
he is evil. When he references Justice, this is in reference to not only the character, but the
actual concept of justice. At first, he perhaps felt a sense of justice when killing those
people, but now he feels that he was wrong. He feels brainwashed by a false sense of
justice. When Zits asks, why wasnt he in the bank with me, it is implied that what Zits did
was unjust; therefore, justice was not present.
2) This quote is important contextually especially as foreshadowing. This pondering is a set-up
for the life as an FBI agent he will now lead. He asks if evil people know that theyre evil or if
they believe they are doing the right thing just before he enters the world and point of view of
murderers. These people, like Zits in the bank, were mislead by a false sense of justice and
commit evil acts. This notion is emphasized at the end of the reading, when Art justifies his
actions by saying In order to fight evil, sometimes we have to do evil things. I believe that
what we did the other night was necessary. Horrible and necessary (56).
