Deans Message
I am happy to present the latest issue of our newsletter. During last few
months, besides routine academic activities, several specialized health
camps like breast and cervix cancer detection camp and routine health
check up camps were conducted from time to time.
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology conducted workshop on
Laparo-hysteroscopy and CME on Gestosis in collaboration with FOGSI.
Both were well organized and attended by our faculty and delegates from
outside.
Several health days, namely World AIDS day, Anti -obesity day, World
cancer day etc were organized to create awareness amongst students
and public in general. In several of them, students participated actively.
Delegations from ECFMG and University of Utah School of Medicine, U.S
visited this institution for collaboration. MOU was signed with Jubilant
Generics for approval of their research projects by our Institutional Ethics
Committee. Three research papers were published by our faculty
members.
Our congratulations are due for our students for excellent performance in
the University sports activities. Whatever has been achieved so far need
not be gloated over, sky is the limit.

Editors Note
We welcome the faculty, students and the wider readership of our Sharda fraternity to browse through the
current issue of e-newsletter. The endeavour has been to showcase the wide range of academic, scientific,
community-centric, patient care and student activities, going on round the clock in SMSR and Sharda hospital.
The newsletter, we hope, reflects the dynamism of our faculty and students in taking our budding school and
hospital to a higher pedestal, to rival the best. We may not have reported all the events, achievements, awards
received or papers published; for what is not received by our desk, cannot be possibly reported out of thin air.
Dean, Prof. Kariholu has been highly supportive for our efforts, since offering the editorial work, this being the
third issue since released.
We solicit support from our respected seniors and faculty, to provide guidance, valuable opinion, feedback,
suggestions for improvement.
With your support, we promise to make this newsletter a chronicle, recording the evolution of SMSR and Sharda
hospital.
World Obesity Day is observed in various parts of the world on November 26,
marking the day with activities to highlight how Obesity is a public health
problem. Department of Community medicine, SMS&R, Sharda University,
celebrated this day by organizing health check-up camps & health awareness
sessions in the community through its urban and rural health centres.
The Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC), at Bhangel, NOIDA, celebrated the
day under the theme of Health hazards of Obesity& the activities included
awareness sessions among the community and organizing health camp. It
started with a Skit performed by the interns posted at UHTC highlighting the
eating habits &lifestyle practices in children leading to childhood obesity. WHO has recognized childhood obesity
as an important predictor of obesity in adult life. They also highlighted the hazards of obesity in adult life and how
healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle can prevent it.
This was followed by a talk by Dr. Neha Tyagi (Assistant professor in charge
UHTC) discussing what is obesity and its magnitude in our country, what are
the modifiable (eating habits, physical inactivity, alcohol addiction)& non
modifiable risk factors(age, sex, genetic factors) leading to obesity, with the
community members. In continuation to the session,
Dr. Deepika Agrawal (Associate Professor In charge UHTC) discussed the
preventive measures mainly the modifiable risk factors, stressing upon the
importance of healthy eating, quantity, quality and type of food, which should
be included in healthy eating & leading a physically active life. The session was
concluded by re-emphasizing the take home messages displayed through the
charts prepared by the MBBS students of 3rd semester.
Health awareness session was followed by free health check-up of patients. Total 62 patients were seen in the
camp under the supervision of Dr Amit Singh Pawaiya, Asst Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine. Health
check up included recording of Height, weight, BMI and estimation of random blood sugar along with complete
clinical examination by the Medical Officer. Out of the examined patients, 14 patients were found to be having
high Random blood sugar levels and 20 patients classified as obese according to their BMI. Patients with high
blood sugar levels were asked to visit Sharda hospital for further evaluation and management. Patients classified
as obese were counselled for lifestyle changes and the interns posted at the centre recorded their contact details
for further follow- up.
World AIDS day was observed by the faculty and students of SMS&R and Sharda Hospital.
The day long activity included talks, poster and collage presentations, skits, road shows and an imaginative and
creative stage show by the students. The aim was to highlight and bring about awareness about the current
status of AIDS epidemic in India, risk factors, preventive aspects and the success of National AIDS Control
Programme run under the aegis of NACO.
The students activities and stage shows were highly appreciated.
FOGSIGESTOSIS CME
5th of December, 2016
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy is a major contributory factor of maternal morbidity and mortality and
accounts to 10-12 % of maternal deaths in India. To avoid this dreaded situation and to improve maternal and
fetal outcome, A FOGSI certified course, accredited by the world organization GESTOSIS (with ICOG credit points
6 and UPMC 2), was organized by professor Dr. Nimmi Chutani (HOD, Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynaecology,
SMS&R), in collaboration with Dr. Sadhna Gupta, Vice President FOGSI, North zone. The course comprised of
elaborate lectures on all the aspects of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy classification, pathophysiology,
lab diagnosis of HDP along with recent management protocols for the patients suffering from mild and severe
preeclampsia and eclampsia. The lectures were delivered by eminent obstetricians from various medical
colleges and by leading private practitioners from Delhi- NCR.
It was attended by the undergraduate students of SMS&R, postgraduates of concerned departments as well as
postgraduates from other medical colleges, along with practicing obstetricians and gynaecologist from Greater
Noida , Noida , Ghaziabad , Hapur and Delhi .
To make the program practical and more interactive, a short role-play was also organized by the senior residents
and undergraduate students of SMS&R. It highlighted the correct technique and importance of measuring blood
pressure at every antenatal visit and was well appreciated.
The occasion was graced by our Honorable Chancellor, Mr. P.K. Gupta , Dean, Dr. PL Kariholu and other senior
faculty members of Sharda Hospital. It was an educative, informative and an interactive session which was a
huge success and appreciated by all.
This day was chosen to mark the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination on 30 January 1948. In his
lifetime, Gandhiji had worked extensively caring for and supporting people with leprosy. Gandhi nursed several
affected people at the Sabarmati ashram. He was one of the first leaders to work for leprosy-affected people. To
quote Gandhi, "leprosy work is not merely medical relief; it is transforming frustration of life into joy of
dedication, personal ambition into selfless service..."
As per the latest available data from the World Health Organization, 57.8% of the new leprosy cases detected
globally in 2012 happened to be from India. Despite having been declared eliminated as a disease of public
health importance in India since December 2005, leprosy continues to retain a prevalence rate (PR) higher than
1/10,000 population in parts of the country, namely, Dadar and Nagar Haveli (3.61), Chhattisgarh (2.13), Bihar
(1.20), Maharashtra (1.09), and West Bengal (1.05).
In Sharda Hospital, we are still getting around 10 new cases of leprosy every year.
Henceforth, the present cornerstone of strategy for leprosy control emphasizes early detection and adequate
treatment of cases, so as to break the chain of infection and reduce the load of infection. Health workers at the
level of Primary Health Centre are trained to diagnose leprosy based on finding at least one of its three cardinal
signs-a skin patch with loss of sensation, enlarged peripheral nerve(s), and lepra bacilli in smears.
With this perspective in mind Department of Dermatology organized Doctors training programme on Leprosy on
30th January 2016, wherein one Doctor from each department of SMS & R is requested to participate. (Anyone
from an intern to faculty can attend, who is genuinely interested to see patients of leprosy and learn about
diagnosis and treatment of leprosy)

Artificial tear supplements, the most common treatment for dry eye provides temporary and symptomatic relief
and do not alter dry eye pathophysiology (ocular surface inflammation). The first one was a randomized, doubleblind, interventional study which shows that dietary consumption of Omega 3 fatty acids (which are antiinflammatory) improves dryness of eyes and tear film parameters in Visual Display Terminal (VDT) users as
compared to a placebo (olive oil).
Phacoemulsification, the standard modality to treat Cataracts in Fuchs Heterochromic cyclitis is not widely
available in subcontinent countries. Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) requires minimal
instrumentation and can also be performed in rural and semi-urban settings. A randomized, double-masked,
prospective, multicenter study shows that SICS is a viable cost effective alternative to phacoemulsification.
The following research paper were published in Journal of Cytology, (indexed in PubMed /Medline).
Kumar P, Bhargava R, Arora YC, Kaushal S, Kumar M. Conjunctival impression cytology versus routine tear
function tests for dry eye evaluation in contact lens wearers. J Cytol. 2015 Oct-Dec;32(4):261-7. doi:

Long term contact lens users suffer from dryness of eyes. Routine tests for assessment of tear functions are
inaccurate and unreliable. A multicentre case controls study was done to compare conjunctival impression
cytology and routine tear film tests for dry eye evaluation in contact lens users. The study shows that
Conjunctival impression cytology scores over routine tests and may well be the first line investigation.
