Abstract
This final project is experimental research. The aim of the study was to describe
the effectiveness of team game tournament to improve students reading skill in report
text on the second grade at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Purworejo in the academic year
2012/2013. The researcher using team game tournament as a strategy to improve
students reading skill. The samples of this research are two classes. The first class is XI
IPA 1 as the experimental group and the second classes is XI IPA 2 as the control group.
Both of classes consist of 64 students. The researcher uses purposive sampling because
the time allocation is limited the researcher must choose the two classes that are in
balance English subject. The researcher tested the students reading skill by giving pretest and post-test. In collecting the data, the researcher used test as the instrument. This
research is a quantitative research, so it needs a data to analysis. The result of this study
showed that teaching reading using team game tournament can improve students
reading skill. Based on the result of pre-test and post-test, the mean score of pre-test
was 72.44. Meanwhile, the mean score of post-test was 75.66. The result of the
computation of t-value (t-test) is 2.59. The computation shows that t-value is higher
than t-table that is 2.59 > 2.000. So the hypothesis is accepted.

A. Introduction
English as a subject matter in school covers the four basic language
skills are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As one of language skills,
reading skill in English subject is taught in Senior High School for the English
Teaching-Learning requirement. This study observes the second graders which
are in Senior High School.
Sometimes students experience boredom in learning activities that
teachers do in their class. One of the way to make the teaching reading
effective is making the students active so they enjoy learning and they can
improve their reading skill. English teaching strategy is changeable.

A cooperative learning strategy as being able to give chance for

student to be involved in discussion. The researcher uses team game
tournament as a learning strategy to improve students reading skill. The
reason why the researcher purposes team game tournament is because it can
be a very useful learning strategy for the effective. Team game tournament is
a strategy of the learning method which demands the students to learn on
group with 5-6 students who have skills.
B. Method
This study is experimental study. There are two groups taken as the
research groups in this study. One group is for the experimental group that
will receive team game tournament in teaching reading and its treatment
while another group is for the control group that receives no treatment.
In this study test is conducted to find out whether there are effective
or not in experimental group after being given team game. In this research,
the researcher chooses MAN Purworejo as the population sampling. The
object is the eleventh grade students of MAN Purworejo especially X1 IPA 1
class and XI IPA 2 class. The population of this study is all the eleventh year of
MAN Purworejo who registered in academic year of 2012/2013. The total of
the population is (279) students. The researcher uses Purposive Sampling
because time allocation is limited and must choose the two classes that are
balance in English subject. In practice, researcher will conduct a pre-test on
the first day and post-test on the last day, while the treatment will be carried
out during one meetings prior to the holding of post-test. This research is a
quantitative research, so it needs a data analysis. This analysis is related to the
computation in answering the problem statement and hypothesis testing
presented. To analyze the data, the researcher applies an appropriate
technique to find out whether teaching reading using team game tournament
strategy is effective to improve students reading skill or not.

In the inferential analysis, hypothesis testing is done. In this testing,

the hypothesis will be analyzed through t-test. The t-test is to see the score
difference between the two variables; the students reading skill of the
experimental group and the control group. After getting the result of t-value,
then the t-value is consulted to the t-table to be interpreted.
C. Research Finding
a. The Reading Skill of Experimental Group
The highest score of pre test was 85 and the lowest one was 50.
While the highest score of post test was 95 and the lowest one was 55.
From the data computation of the pre test of the experimental group, it
was found that the Median was 75, and then the Modus was 80. Beside,
from the post test of the experimental group, it was found that the Median
was 75, and then the Modus was 75. The students who are in very good
class were 43.75 %. And then, the percentage of the students who is in
good level was 46.88 %. The percentage of the students who were in fair
level was 3.12 %. While poor level is 6.25 %.
a. The Reading Skill of Control Group
The highest score of the students of control group of the second
grade students at MAN Purworejo is described that the highest score of pre
test was 85 and the lowest one was 38. While the highest score of post test
was 85 and the lowest one was 45. From the data computation of pre test,
it was found that Median was 73, and then the Modus was 75. Beside, from
the post test of the control group, it was found that the Median was 70,
and then Modus was 75. The percentage of the students who was in very
good level is 12.5 %. And then, the percentage of the students who was in
good level is 43.75 %. The percentage of the students who were in fair level
is 28.12 %. While poor level is 15.63 %.
From the previous analysis, it shows that with the number of
samples (N1 = 32 and N2 = 32) and the level of significance is 5%, the result

of the computation of t-value is 2.59. Based on the value in the t-table for
N1 =32 and N2 = 32 and the significance level is 5%, the value of t-table is
2.000. The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table that is
2.59>2.000.
After computing t-test separated variance, and after knowing that
the hypothesis is accepted, the theory meets the fact in this case. Then,
from the computation in the previous section; the researcher concludes
that it is effective of using Team Game Tournament as a strategy in
teaching reading to improve students reading skill of the second grade
students of MAN Purworejo.
D. Conclusion
The result of the comparison of control group and experimental
group is quite significant. There is no change of score increase in control
group, while the experimental group who received treatment, there is a
change for the better. We can see from the comparison between the posttest of control group and experimental group. It shows that the mean of
post-test in the control group (67.81) was lower than the mean of post test
in experimental group (76.56). It means that it is effective of using Team
Game Tournament as a strategy in teaching reading to improve students
reading skill of the second grade students of MAN Purworejo.
