Analysis

After careful analysis of the Strategies for Librarians evaluation reports, it is quite
apparent that there are many areas for growth. However, Standard III, Principle 3:B, I
believe needs immediate attention before another year goes by and nothing is done in
regarding the inventory of the library collection. Prior to me getting hired, Miller Jordan
Middle School went without a librarian for a little more than a year and a half. The
library program and collection were under the direction of the library aide. The library
aide was only responsible for checking in/checking out books and shelving. Prior to not
having a certified librarian, the previous librarians left the library to pursue other
opportunities at the end of the school year and did not begin and/or complete the end of
the year inventory of the collection. According to the most recent Collection Analysis by
Mackin Educational Resources, our collection has an average date of publication of
1995, or 21 years. Once the inventory is completed, then the next step will be to weed
out printed material that is not up to date and only printed material that is current and
relevant in the collection will remain.
After weeding, then I will be able to complete Standard II Principle 4AB and
Standard VI: Principle 3B. At the same time, I will get and develop my budget and
allocate funds appropriately for the year. This is Standard II: Principle 3A.
Standard III: Principle 2BC, I plan to work on right away. I will create signs until I
can get plaques made and place them where all the copy abled equipment is located. I
will teach a lesson on copyright to students and teachers.

In the spring, I will focus on Standard II Principle 1C. I will begin a junior
librarian program. I will have two periods with three students in each period who will
assist in some of the daily tasks. I will develop a syllabus so that the students will know
the objectives, expectations, and evaluation system.
Throughout the semester, I will encourage and try to maintain my flexible
schedule which is Standard I Principle 3C. I know that I cant control my library
assistant being pulled away to cover classes, but I will work to ensure that a flexible
schedule is in place which will meet the needs of the students.
I understand that this is a great undertaking, but I will focus on maintaining the
collection by performing inventory and weeding. The other standards will be completed
when time permits. These are projects that may not be completed in the fall semester
but should be completed in the spring. My inventory project is the one that I really want
to complete before the end of the semester.
