The shops have small windows, and the houses have rooms under the ground floor and le gardens. quiet here but Pete and Carla can hear music. “Look,” says Pete. “That man is playing the flute. Let's go and listen.” ‘They walk across the street and watch the man. The flute player watches them but his tune, Greensleeves, doesn’t stop. The shopkeeper doesn’t answer it for a minute, then he looks at the girl and she looks me © at him. They don’t speak but Carla understands: he is telling the girl, “Watch these students.” “Excuse me,” he says, and he goes through the curtain Pete is still looking at stamps. “Como and see these stamps, Carla,” he says. “They're from South America. I'd like to start a collection with them. But Carla doesn’t like the people in this shop. They aren’t very friendly, and she wants to look at some more of the city. “They are very expensive,” she says. “Let’s go, Pet ‘The girl watches them, and then she smiles. Pete and Carla go back into the crowds of tourists. Carla is happy outside the shop, but the sun is hot and Pete wants a drink, “Lot’s go to a café," he says. “There's one near tho Abbey.” He wanted the stamps from South America, but he says nothing ‘There are tables outside the café and Pete and Carla sit down at one of them. There are a lot of people in the café and the ‘waiter doesn’t come to their table for a minute or two, ‘an we go into the Abbey?” asks Carla. She knows he wanted the stamps, but they were very expensive. “Twant a drink first,” says Pete, “OK,” says Carla, and she smiles at him. Pete smiles at her, too. They are very happy together “Hey! I want you two!” Pete and Carla look up. The shopkeeper is surprised. “Can I?” he says. “Please look... please look now,” says Carla, “We didn’t steal anything and we want you to know that.” She gives him her bag, asks the policeman, “Perhaps 10 The shopkeeper looks in their pockets and in Carla's bag. The people at the other tables watch him, Ts he going to find the coins?” they think. But he finds nothing. “What did we tell you?” says Pete. “[-I'm sorry,” says the shopkeeper. “I was wrong. But I don’t understand it. Where are the coins? Remember? The shopkeeper was on _ the phone. The girl took the coins then. “How did the flute player get the coins?” asks the policeman. “The girl dropped them out of the window,” says Carli “Didn’t people see her?” says Pete. “Yes, they saw her, But she dropped them into the flute player's hat with the other coins,” says Carla “They didn’t know the coins were valuable. ye] : Acar takes the flute player “The policeman gets the coins from the flute player. to the police station, and the girl in the shop goes with them, “Thank you,” the shopkeeper says to Carla “Those coins are valuable. Can I give you something?” Carla smiles. “Give Pete tho stamps from South America,” she says. “Then he can start his stamp collection!
