INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION: Daislynn Kimball, Critical Care Paramedic
COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to provide
immediate medical care to critically ill or injured patients until personnel with
advanced training arrive to assist those personnel. Students must
successfully complete a skills proficiency record, the written examination with
a score of 70% or better and the practical examination. The program follows
the Department of Transportation, Louisiana State Bureau of Emergency
Medical Services (BEMS) guidelines and National Registry of Emergency
Medical Technicians.
PREREQUISITES: Senior status; possess a cumulative 2.0 grade point average;
completed Biology I, English III, and Algebra I with a C average or better; and
possess a valid Emergency Medical Responder state license or be considered exempt
from Emergency Medical Responder.
TECHNICAL STANDARDS: Students must demonstrate ability to meet the following
technical/performance standards while receiving the instruction as outlined in course
syllabus:
a) Read and communicate orally and in writing using the English language.
b) Hear with or without auditory aids to understand normal speaking voice
without viewing the speakers face.
c) Visually, with or without corrective lenses, observe changes in clients
condition and actively participate in learning process.
d) Utilize stamina, strength and psychomotor coordination necessary to perform
routine practical nursing procedures at floor or bed level.
e) Demonstrate use of gross and fine motor skills necessary to provide
independent, safe and effective practical nursing care.
f) Solve problems and apply critical thinking skills while providing safe and
efficient client care.
g) Interact with individuals/families/groups from various socioeconomic and
cultural backgrounds.

h) Adapt and function in a multi stressor environment while adhering to


legal/ethical guidelines of the school.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of this course with a minimum of 70%
accuracy the student will:

Applies fundamental knowledge of the EMS system, safety/well-being


of the EMT, and medical/legal and ethical issues to the provision of
emergency care.
Applies fundamental knowledge of the anatomy and function of all
human systems to the practice of EMS.
Uses foundational anatomical and medical terms and abbreviations in
written and oral communication with colleagues and other health care
professionals.
Applies fundamental knowledge of the pathophysiology of respiration
and perfusion to patient assessment and management.
Applies fundamental knowledge of life span development to patient
assessment and
management.
Uses simple knowledge of the principles of illness and injury prevention
in emergency care.
Applies fundamental knowledge of the medications that the EMT may
assist/administer to a patient during an emergency .
Applies knowledge (fundamental depth, foundational breadth) of
anatomy and physiology to patient assessment and management in
order to assure a patent airway, adequate mechanical ventilation, and
respiration for patients of all ages.
Applies scene information and patient assessment findings (scene sizeup, primary and secondary assessment, patient history, reassessment)
to guide emergency management.
Applies fundamental knowledge to provide basic emergency care and
transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely ill patient.
Applies a fundamental knowledge of the causes, pathophysiology, and
the management of shock, respiratory failure or arrest, cardiac failure
or arrest, and post-resuscitation management.
Applies a fundamental knowledge of the growth, development, aging
and assessment findings to provide basic emergency care and
transportation for a patient with special needs.
Knowledge of operational roles and responsibilities to ensure patient,
public, and personnel safety.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
All students must be officially enrolled in any course that they attend. It is expected
that students will attend scheduled classes regularly and on time. If an absence
occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to make up all missed work, if approved
by the instructor. Students who stop attending a course and do not officially drop,
may receive a grade of F for all coursework missed that may result in a punitive
final grade. An instructor may drop a student for excessive absences if the student
misses 10 percent of the class. This policy shall be superseded by any more
stringent attendance policy required by a regulatory or licensing body having
jurisdiction over program requirements. The attendance policy for each class must
be included in the course syllabus. Attendance will be tracked and maintained for
various reporting purposes.
Punctuality is a must. Make sure you arrive on time. All clinical dates and
times require your attendance. Failure to complete 24 hours of clinical
rotation will result in not being certified. Compliance is mandatory.
EVALUATION AND GRADING:
90%-100%=A
80%-89%=B
70%-79%=C
60%-69%=D (lack of progression)
59% and below =F
Classroom Policies:
Each student should enter the classroom quietly and on time.
Students will begin bell-work assignment upon arrival.
Students should be prepared to work for the entire class. Due to required
hours for certification and course material, it is imperative to be ready to
work.
Students should clean desk area and lab area prior to leaving. Must respect
our new facility.
No eating, drinking, or cell phone usage are allowed unless students have
teacher permission.
Proper behavior is expected. Excessive talking, sleeping, tardies, disrespect
for others or property, and not following directions will be handled accordingly.
If you choose to break a rule:
1st offense: Verbal warning
2nd offense: Writing assignment/Parent Signature
3rd offense: Writing assignment/Parent Signature and parental contact
effort
All subsequent offenses will be referred to the administrative office.

Evaluation Methods:
Written examinations: The student will be evaluated through daily care
reports, homework assignments, written test, unit exams, and a final
comprehensive exam.
Daily Care Reports: The daily care report will be a mandatory exiting
assignment the student will complete upon the completion of each day.
The report must contain an objective they have learned during that class
meeting. The student may not make-up daily care reports without an
excuse.
Homework assignments: Students will be given chapter homework
assignments that must be completed and turned in upon entering class on
the assigned date. Any late assignment are at risk to be lowered a grade
each day late.
Written Test: Students will take test on chapter material upon the
completion of every chapter or two. These test are to prepare each
student for the unit exams. The written test are an important assessment
on the students understanding of the present material.
Unit Exam: The unity exam is a comprehensive exam completed at the
end of each unit. The unit exam will consist of multiple chapters. The
student will be expected to pass each unit exam with 70% efficiency or
better, in order to complete the certification process. The student will be
permitted to reattempt the unity exam, if they do not obtain a 70% on the
initial attempt.
Final Comprehensive Exam: The final comprehensive exam will be an
accumulated exam that covers all material taught throughout the year.
The student must pass this exam with a 70% efficiency or better to
complete certification process. The student will be permitted to attempt
the exam on three occasions.
Psychomotor Assessment: The student will be evaluated through the proper
demonstration of learned skills. The student will be assessed using the
assigned skill check-off sheets provided.
Students must pass skills check offs with an 80% to pass this course and
100% to receive certification.
The student will be permitted to attempt the skill three times for passing.
The student will receive one grade lower for each reattempt at successful
completion of the psychomotor assessment.
***As with in-class assignments, when homework is assigned, it is to be
completed as if it were to be graded. I exercise the right to grade any
assignment at any time, including homework.***
*** All reattempt attempts are for certification process only; the initial attempt
grade will be recorded in the gradebook.***

***I reserve the right to change and rearrange the exam on any reattempt at
each exam.***
Grade Distribution:

Daily Care Reports/Homework Assignments= 10%


Written Test= 20%
Psychomotor Test= 30%
Unit Exams/Final= 40%

Makeup Policy:
An absence from school is considered excused for personal illnesses if that student
provides an excuse obtained from a doctor. Other excused absences may be for
serious illnesses in the family or for a death in the family (with obituary provided).
With an excused absence, students are allowed to make up the work missed. An
absence may be temporarily excused if a personal illness is verified in writing by a
parent or guardian, but without a doctors note. They are allowed to make up any
work missed, but the absence counts toward unexcused absences. An absence is
considered unexcused for any reason other than those mentioned about and/or is a
written excuse is not submitted in writing five (5) days from the day the student
returns to school. With an unexcused absence, a student is NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE
UP ANY WORK missed, and any tests missed will result in a grade of F. Clinical time
must be made up during allotted time at end of the year.
***If you are absent the day of a test or assignment due and the absence is excused,
the test will be made up or the assignment will be due on the day that you return to
school, with the exception of quizzes. Repeated reminders to make-up work will not
be given---it is the responsibility of the student. Absences due to school functions do
not exempt students from class work; the work must be made up. Time is a factor for
credentials.
Homework will be at the discretion of the instructor and based on the reason for the
absence.
Academic Honesty:
Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. In
addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions, which may be imposed through the
regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, your instructor
will assign a zero for the exercise or examination that evidences academic
misconduct for the first offense and assign an F for the course for repeated
offenses.
Cell Phone Policy:
Cell phones and any other type of electronic device are to be on silent mode and kept
in a purse, backpack, or locker during classroom time. These devices are not to be
kept on the desk during class. They are not allowed in the clinical setting.
Chromebook Policy:

The use of Chromebooks will be permitted during class for note taking, following
along, or inside assignments. The student is expected to display professionalism and
monitor their own actions; if any situation of misuse of the Chromebook the student
will receive the discipline actions as describe in the student handbook. Chromebooks
are a privilege and should not be abused.
