HFO, also known as residual fuel oil, is based on the high viscosity, tar-like mass, which remains after

the distillation
and subsequent cracking of crude oil in order to produce lighter hydrocarbon products, such as petrol , distillate
diesel fuels and heating oil or feedstocks for lubricants.
The main components are alkanes, cycloalkanes and different carbon hydrides. The boiling range is between 300C
and ~700C.
Due to its semi-fluid consistence, HFO has to be preheated to make it combustible in engines.
RMA, RMB, RMD, RME, RMG or RMK are the international trade names.

Cheap, but challenging

As a residual product, HFO is a relatively inexpensive fuel it typically costs 30% less than distillate fuels
(MDO/MGO) (Verlinkung). It thus became the standard fuel for large marine diesel engines during the oil crisis in the
1970s and 1980s, and it required extensive adaptation of the injection system and other components of low and
medium speed engines which are still the only reciprocating engines capable of running on HFO.
Most of our MAN medium speed liquid fuel engines can burn heavy fuel oil (HFO). Of course, our medium speed
dual fuel engines are capable of burning HFO in liquid fuel mode as well.

Heavy fuel oil Diesel generator sets (HFO diesel generator), mostly in low-speed generator, the main
operating costs are low, long-term continuous operation and reliable operation, long life expectancy, fast
quick return on investment and low noise advantages. The disadvantage is the high investment for the
construction.
The hfo diesel generator sets can be the best choice for power generation of uninterrupted power plants,
large industrial and mining enterprises and regional power plants, large industrial and mining enterprises
and the regional electricity.
Heavy machine advantages and disadvantages:
when compared the heavy fuel oil with diesel oil, the hfo prices is much lower, more economical for use in
continuous power generation.
Heavy fuel oil diesel generator machine durability, it has a long overhaul period, the shortest overhaul time is
more than 10,000 hours before overhaul, the longest up to more than 40,000 hours before to be overhauled,
and a longer service life, while the diesel engine at 7,000 hours is generally would need a major overhaul.
Heavy fuel oil diesel generators noise is low, but hfo diesel generator power plant need more site area for
installation, and construction period is longer than diesel oil power plant
Heavy fuel oil diesel generator fuel consumption is low,but it's a one-time investment is large.
Heavy fuel oil diesel generator can bear heavy load and can continuous run at 90% or rate capacity, but
requirement for O&M staffs skills are higher.
Heavy fuel oil diesel generator can run reliably and continuously with high availability, and can take full
advantage of application of exhausted hot gas to generate power or use for cooling/heating, resulting in

considerable economic benefits.

Heavy fuel oil and light oil power generation cost comparison:
1, oil prices: according to current market price of oil, 180 # heavy oil: 3000 yuan / ton; 0 # diesel oil: 4.05 yuan
/ liter.
2, fuel oil consumption: According to the Diesel Engine Performance exact statistics, burning heavy fuel per
kilowatt of about 240 g; burning of diesel fuel per kWh 0.28 liters. (if for our MAN or Hyundai HFO set, the oil
consumption is about 180g/kwh)
3, can be seen from the table on the right than the use of heavy fuel oil diesel power generation cost per
kilowatt of about 0.418 Yuan.
