Quotation Marks with Direct Speech

I. Content and Standards:


Common Core State Standards
L.4.2b use commas and quotation marks to mark direct speech
and quotations from a text
II. Prerequisites:
Students will need:
- to be familiar a quote
- to be familiar with quotation marks
III. Instructional Objective:
Students will:
- be able to use commas and quotation marks to mark direct
speech
IV. Instructional Procedures: BDA
Before: Teacher will review the terms quote and quotation marks
for students who might not be familiar with the terms. Teacher will
discuss terms dialogue and direct speech to provide common
background knowledge to class and introduce the lesson.
During:. Teacher will display projectable 3.4 and discuss how to use
punctuation and quotation marks when writing dialogue. Teacher will
explain words such as asked, said, replied, whispered, etc. come
before or after a direct quotation to tell who is speaking. Teacher will
have students share additional words that notate someone is speaking.
Teacher will share safari montage video (approximately 3 minutes long)
titled Punctuating Dialogue. Teacher will model using quotation
marks and other punctuation with direct speech in examples. Teacher
and students will work through I do, we do, you do where #1-#4 are
teacher/student and #5-#7 are student partners. Students will
complete page 31 in their Journeys Readers Notebook on their own.

After: Teacher and students will review and discuss workbook pages.
Teacher will share how the use of quotation marks in direct speech
assists in creating writing pieces commanding dialogue.
V. Materials and Equipment:
Teacher
- Grade 4 Journeys teacher manual
- computer with internet
- Projectable
Students
- Grade 4 Journeys student notebook
- pencil and eraser
VI. Assessment/Evaluation:
Informal assessment will be monitored through student participation of
quotation marks and dialogue. Formal assessment will be conducted
through student completion of notebook page 31, Quotation Marks with
Direct Speech. Results will be used for additional instructional
planning and to determine future differentiation.
VII. Differentiation: Individualized Activities:
Small groups are selected to allow inclusive discussions between
teacher/students, students/teacher, and student/student.
Individualized activities are not included. Students who demonstrate
Readiness and/or Enrichment will engage in discussions with the group
and may be encouraged to expand explanations of strategies.
English language learners may require additional explanation of
language terminology.
VIII. Technology:
Technology will be utilized in displaying projectable and safari montage
video.
IX. Self-Assessment:
The lesson will be successful if:
- students are engaged
- students can correctly identify dialogue
- students can correctly use commas and quotation marks to
mark direct speech
