A revived SGA: 2016-2017 Strategic Plan

Vision
A revived Student Government Association that is dedicated to its purpose, active in its role, and attentive to the concerns of
the Student Body, in further making IUS the great and student focus campus it is.

Mission
SGA is the official student governance organization on campus. We represent the voice of the student body at IU Southeast.
What does SGA do for you? We voice concerns to administration; hold majority vote on parking appeals; serve on
administrative committees; and offer tutoring and daycare vouchers.

Dear SGA members, Students, Administrators, Faculty, and Staff
Theres never been a better time for SGA than now, because this is our year of revival.
In April of 2016, the members of the 53rd session passed on the torch to the members
of the 54th session to carry on the works of the Student Government Association. We
sought to put this document together for clearer SGA direction.
After consultations amongst some SGA members, this document was prepared for your
awareness purpose regarding the aspirations of the SGA. We understand that an
informed Student Body is critical to the continuation of the SGA in carrying out its
duties. We also understand that an informed school is critical to assisting us in making
our plan a reality. This document, which weve titled: A revived SGA: 2016-2017
Strategic Plan, is not a promise, rather a strategy for what we hope to accomplish. In
our first one year of the 53rd session governing, it is our goal that we will build on the
works of previous SGA members and in the process achieve many other things. Our plan is build on five pillars:
Events collaboration and Support to organizations
Recruitment to the SGA
Transparency and Engagement of the SGA
Promotion of the SGA
Working with the Chancellor and IUS offices
Please see our offices if you have any questions or concerns. Senate (UC024), Judicial (016), Executive (014). You
may email the SGA at judsga@ius.edu or email me at mjallayu@ius.edu.

Initiative 6: Senate Restructure

Work with the chancellor in restructuring the student senate as mentioned in IUS 2016-2021 strategic plan

- Work study based:

The Student Senate would work as though it is a work study based position. A limited number of senate seats
should be considered Work-study position. Each applicate must put in an application through the Human
Resource Office to be approved before applying for a Senate position, with the proof that the Human Resource
granted the student a work-study position in the senate. Said member shall attend all SGA meetings and
participate in all SGA events and serve on committees and carry out other duties assigned to him/her.

- Elective course based:

Just like the Horizon, students may choose to join the SGA, but as an elective. Student will serve for the full
semester and may not miss more than two SGA meetings or that would be an automatically fail. Student may
choose to join the SGA Senate, Judicial, or Executive, depending on their qualification and such notification shall
be written to the Register to inform them of what position the student is in, before the semester starts.

- Organizations representation based

Each organization shall nominate one member from their organization to represent them in the Student Senate.
That member shall attend all meetings and make SGA events, when possible. That member shall report to
his/her organizations leader and to the Student Body President. That member is a full fledge member of the
Senate and shall take part in the legislative process.

Student Ambassador Committee Program

The Student Ambassador Committee is in the SGA bylaw (2012), however, it has not been utilized or fully
developed. Nevertheless, the SAC is a great idea when implemented could create a thriving SGA and create a
better SGA. The Senate Chair, Senate Pro-Tempore, Senate Treasurer, Senate Press Secretary, Senate Secretary,
and Senate Treasurer should be considering At large senators, who represent all schools and students. For the
SAC, each school should nominate three (may be lower or higher than three) students to serve in the SGA Senate
as a Senator from that School. The leader chosen among those three shall be considered the Senate Majority
Leader, and along with the two other senators, work to advance their school and the student body interest.
Based on schedule, the Senate Majority Leader shall meet up a meet with his/her respective school dean to meet,
along with the two other senators to report any necessary information, findings, or data. The Senate Majority
Leader may also reserve a room to host events with students of that school and to provide a place for those
students to voice their concern. In the end, all senators represent the interest of the whole student body.
