Course Description
This course is a survey of modern management and supervision concepts, theory and practice. The
roles of managers, history and development of management theory, and the functional aspects of
management are stressed. A particular focus of the course is the relationship between manager and
employee. In addition to the text, students will learn about current management practice by reading
primary texts in the field, newspapers, journals and magazines, and preparing in-class reports. The
class is structured as a seminar course with emphasis on in-class discussion and collaborative
learning.

To introduce general management theory and its application to problems


in managing people and organizations.
To introduce concepts such as organizational decision-making, strategic
planning, organizational behavior, organizational change, motivation
theory, leadership concepts, and methods of monitoring and control.
The importance of diversity and ethics in organizations and management
will be integrated into management concepts introduced in this course.
Management concepts will be examined in the context of the global
environment within which business operates as well as the impact of
technology in the modern business environment.

Academic Integrity:

Any incidents of cheating or plagiarizing on exams, quizzes, papers, or projects


will be reported to the Department Chair and then forwarded to the Academic
Affairs Council. The Academic Affairs Council will recommend sanctions:
Disciplinary Probation, Information/Reflection Task, and Recommendation No
Credit for Assignment, Dismissal.
Absences
Absences will have to be made up in a manner prescribed by the professor and will consider the
circumstances of the absence. It is important to note that material may be covered in the
classroom that is not covered in the course texts. As a result, class attendance (or arranging for a
friend to take notes or record the class session) is in the best interest of the student. The grade of

incomplete (I) will be assigned by a professor to a student who has not completed the assigned
course work because of documented illness or some other emergency during the last four class
sessions. A grade of I cannot be assigned to allow a student with poor performance additional
time to raise the grade. (See college catalog for policy on incomplete grades).
Description of Examinations and Reports:
Students are expected to write at the undergraduate level and are strongly encouraged to enlist the
support of one following publications.
MLA
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fourth Edition, 1994.
All papers are to be formatted in double space, 12 point, Times New Roman. The papers are to
include a title page with the name(s) of the student (or group members) and the appropriate class
information (as well as the title of the project). Page length of assignments does not include title
page, bibliography, or appendices. Late papers will receive a penalty of one letter grade for each
week late.
A. Exams will include a combination of multiple choice, matching, true/false, and short
essay.
B. Book Review: Students will read the book Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson,
M.D. Students will submit a 1-2 page review of the book citing the managerial concepts
and theories discussed in the course.
C. Participation: Students are expected to participate in online discussions during the class
event. It is expected that you will have read the assigned readings prior to class as this
material drives the discussion. Current events and stock market project are included in
this grade. Consideration will be given to degree of preparation, in-class discussions,
and attendance.
D. Movie Review: Students are expected to pick a movie and then submit a 2-3 page paper
drawing management situations and objectives from the movie, then relating it to
management principles and concepts from the text.
