Introduction

Introduction

1.1 OPC Overview

Traditionally, each application developer has had to present a custom interface or
driver in order to communicate with hardware field devices. With OPC, automation
applications, field systems and office applications can exchange data efficiently, using
a standard interface. The OPC technology offers great benefits to vendors and users.
Vendors can concentrate on developing one competent OPC server instead of various
drivers, which leads to lower costs and enhanced customer products. End users can
connect automation software and hardware to more complex control and business
systems, such as HMI (Human Machine Interface), SCADA (Supervisory Control
And Data Acquisition), and other applications that support OPC. The connections
can be made in a quick plug-and-play manner.
OPC (OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) for Process Control) is a nonproprietary technical specification that defines a set of standard interfaces based on
Microsofts OLE/COM technology. The technologies behind OPC are presented
briefly below. For further information please visit www.opcfoundation.org.

COM - Component Object Model

COM is the core of the DCOM, ActiveX and OLE technologies. It allows an application to use features of any other application object or operating system, and can be
used to create customized solutions.

OLE - Object Linking and Embedding

OLE provides integration among applications, and is used to develop reusable plugand-play objects. Software components can be written in any language. OLE Automation was developed for the process control industry.

DCOM - Distributed Component Object Model

DCOM is developed from COM, used in a network environment, and allows remote
objects to appear as local.

ActiveX
ActiveX is a revision of OLE, and is object-based rather than object-oriented. It is
used by web producers to create portable applications, which are supported on Mac,
Windows and Unix operating systems.

The Program Functionality

Status Tool
The Status Tool displays the server time, the number of connected clients, the current status of the OPC server, the number of tags and the number of active tags.

The state of the OPC server is either Running or Stopped. A tag is active while the
OPC server reads from it, or has ordered reading of it. When a client is connected to
a tag via an OPC item, and the item is active, the tag will be activated and scanned
for values. When Monitor is active and the server is running while tags are visible in
the tag view, these tags will be active and scanned.
Note:
The program is not case-sensitive, which means that a tag named Digital1 cannot coexist with a tag named digital1.
Names of controllers, groups and tags may not contain comma or period characters. Use
of national characters can be selected under Tools/Options/Name check.

The Program Functionality

2.7 Beijer Electronics OPC Server as a

Windows Service
Beijer Electronics OPC Server supports running as a Windows NT/2000/XP service.
The ability to run as an Windows service is crucial for many applications where the
server must provide data to OPC clients via DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model). For these applications, the loss of a DCOM connection cannot be tolerated. Normally, an OPC server that supports stand-alone program operation only,
is forced to shut down when its host machine experiences a user login or logout.
While running as a service, Beijer Electronics OPC Server can continue to supply
OPC data across user login sessions. As a service, Beijer Electronics OPC Server can
be configured to run with no visible presence.
The OPC server can also be configured to interact with the desktop, which allows
making changes to the server project. The Beijer Electronics OPC Server icon is then
displayed on the system task bar, and changes may be made to the OPC server project
even though it is running as a service.

Configuring the OPC Server to Run as a Service

The description below applies to Windows XP. For Windows NT/2000, the procedure varies slightly. For further information, see the Windows documentation.
1. Start the Beijer Electronics OPC Server application. Select Tools/Options and
click on the Windows Service tab.

Beijer Electronics, MAEN641C

15

The Program Functionality

2. Check the Automatically start as a Windows service check box. The following
message is then displayed:

To immediately make the OPC server a service, the application has to be terminated.
The server can then be restarted either by selecting Administrative Tools/Services
from the Control Panel, or by allowing your OPC client to invoke the server when
it connects.

Note:
The Windows service option of the OPC server can be accessed by a Windows NT/2000/
XP administrator only. If you are currently logged in as a normal user the option will be
disabled.

Once the Beijer Electronics OPC Server service option is configured, you may also
need to modify the Windows Services options for Beijer Electronics OPC Server to
setup the server for your specific application. The properties for the OPC server as a
Windows Service are displayed by selecting Administrative Tools/Services from the
Control Panel or by selecting Tools/DCOM Config from the OPC server application.

16

Beijer Electronics, MAEN641C

The Program Functionality

3. Select BeijerElectronicsOPCServer from the list and click the Properties button
at the top to display the following dialog:

By default Beijer Electronics OPC Server is configured for automatic startup and interaction with the desktop. Interaction with the desktop means that the Beijer Electronics OPC Server icon is displayed on the system task bar, and that changes may
be made to the OPC server project even though it is running as a service.
However, the OPC server cannot be shut down from any of the normal menu commands or close functions. In the OPC server application, select Tools/Options, click
on the Windows Service tab, and check the Show Close Option in Tray menu box
to allow the user to close the application by right-clicking on the Beijer Electronics
OPC Server icon.
Allowing the OPC server to interact with the desktop has no effect on its ability to
supply OPC data across user logins.
Once the OPC server project is completely configured, you may want to consider
disabling the servers interaction with the desktop. This will prevent users from viewing the application icon on the task bar and further reduce unauthorized access to the
OPC server.
To prevent the OPC server from interacting with the desktop, uncheck Allow Service
to Interact with Desktop under the Log On tab in the Service manager in the Control panel.

Beijer Electronics, MAEN641C

17

The Program Functionality

After disabling desktop interaction, the OPC Server has to be restarted for the icon
to be removed from the system taskbar.

Note:
While running Beijer Electronics OPC Server in a demo or evaluation mode, it is strongly
recommended to continue to allow the OPC server to interact with the desktop. This
will allow any error messages that the server may generate, such as The demo time
has expired, to be displayed. If this occurs, the server service can be stopped from the
Service manager according to the following section.

Once the OPC server is configured to run as a service, it can be started and stopped
manually using the Service manager. Select the BeijerElectronicsOPCServer service
and either start or stop the service using the buttons at the top, or by clicking Start,
Stop or Restart when the Extended tab has been selected.

18

Beijer Electronics, MAEN641C

The Program Functionality

Returning to Normal Program Mode

To return the OPC server to normal stand-alone program operation, you must first
be able to interact with the server project. This requires that the OPC server is able
to interact with the desktop.
Perform the following steps if the OPC server is not configured to interact with the
desktop:
1. Use the Windows Service manager to enable desktop interaction, and then stop
the BeijerElectronicsOPCServer service.
2. After stopping the OPC server, restart it using the Start button in the Service
manager. The Beijer Electronics OPC Server icon is now displayed on the system
task bar, and changes may be made to the project.
3. Open the Beijer Electronics OPC Server application.
4. Select Tools/Options, and click on the Windows Service tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically start as a Windows service checkbox.
6. Stop the OPC server using the Service manager Stop button. Beijer Electronics
OPC Server can now be run from a normal desktop icon or Start menu selection.
If the OPC server is configured to run as a service, and you attempt to run it from a
desktop icon or the Start menu, the following message is displayed:

The Program Functionality

Problems when Running the OPC Server as a

Service?
Under most circumstances it is possible to seamlessly switch between service mode
and stand-alone mode. However, a DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model)
security issue may prevent the OPC client from being able to connect to the server
when it is running as a service.

Note:
It is recommended to contact the network administrator prior to changing any DCOM
settings.

If the OPC client has problems to connect to Beijer Electronics OPC Server running
as service, first take the server out of service mode and confirm the OPC connection
in stand-alone mode.
Once the OPC client connection is confirmed under normal circumstances, the
DCOM settings may have to be changed using the following steps:
1. Configure the OPC server to run as a service.

2.8 DDE Support

Dynamic Data Exchange, DDE, is a server-client method of exchanging data between applications. It can perform one-time data transfers or keep a client informed
of changes to a data item. In addition, the client application can give commands and
data to the server, using Windows messages and shared memory. Most applications
do not send Windows messages directly or manage the shared memory themselves.
Instead, like Beijer Electronics OPC Server, they use a dynamic linked library,
DDEML (DDE Management Library), that provides an application programming
interface to manage shared data among the DDE applications.
The DDE server in Beijer Electronics OPC Server allows applications such as
Microsoft Excel to act as clients.
Using drag-and-drop as well as Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V is supported when copying items
from Beijer Electronics OPC Server to Microsoft Excel.

Note:
Using national characters is not supported when using DDE.

Matrix Links
It is possible to read/write several I/Os with one DDE link, a matrix link. Normally
the requested I/O is selected by only referring to its name in the item position in the
DDE formula (application, topic, item), e.g. D0.
To enable a matrix link, the syntax I/O,column*line,format in the item position is
used. Column and line sets the size of the matrix, and format may be specified according to the table below.

Specifier

Format

Description

Decimal

+/- decimal value

Unsigned

Positive decimal value

Octal

Positive octal value

Hexadecimal

Positive hexadecimal value

Float

32-bit +/- floating point value

String

Text string (automatic conversion between ANSI and OEM)

In front of all format specifiers, except f and s, an l (long) may be typed, which means
that two 16-bit registers will be shown as one 32-bit value. Each cell in the matrix
then displays the value formed by the combined contents of two registers.
In front of the format specifier s, the number of registers that will be interpreted as a
text string must be typed.
Timer/counters, coil, preset main and preset sub are not supported by Beijer
Electronics OPC Server.

Beijer Electronics, MAEN641C

23

The Program Functionality

Typing =BeDDE|Controller1!D0,4*2,u in Excel will read register D0-D7, put
them in a matrix of 4 columns by 2 lines and show each cell as a positive decimal
value. The components in the DDE-formula above is service (BeDDE), topic
(Controller1) and item (D0,4*2,u). Excel requires the apostrophes around the item
position.
The matrix that is defined as column*line normally handles values line by line, i.e.
first the value in column 1, line 1 is handled, then column 2, line 1 etc. This order
may be changed by instead typing column/line. In this case values are handled
column by column instead, i.e. first the value in column 1, line 1 is handled, then
column 1, line 2 etc.
Note that the corresponding spreadsheet area must be selected before the formula is
entered, and that Ctrl-Shift-Enter instead of just Enter must be clicked to finish.

The Program Functionality

2.9 Modem Support

Some drivers support using a modem instead of, or as a complement to a serial cable.
The OPC server automatically recognizes modem support, and properly adds
modem tags to the SystemVariables group in the OPC server.
For information about connecting a modem to the controller we refer to the manual
for the current controller.

Note:
Modem settings are saved in a file with file extension .dat located in the same directory
as the OPC server project file. If the OPC server project is moved, the *.dat file has to
be moved to the destination as well.

Users Guide

The Users Guide is intended as a help for users to get started easily with common
functions in the program.
One way to perform a certain action is described, but usually there are several possible procedures.
The program is not case sensitive, which, for example, means that a tag named
MyTag cannot coexist with a tag called mytag. Spaces are not allowed in names
of controllers, groups or tags.

4.2 Installing New or Updated Drivers

A new or updated driver can be added either with the programming tool using an
Internet connection or from disk. After updating an existing driver or installing a
new driver, the OPC server has to be restarted.

Installation of Driver Using Internet

New drivers can be installed and available drivers can be updated to the latest version
via Internet. The computer must be able to connect to Internet, but a browser is not
required.

To Install or Update Drivers via Internet:

1. Select File/Update drivers/from Internet.
When the connection is established all drivers that can be downloaded to the computer from Internet are listed. The list states the version number of available and installed drivers.
The function Mark Newer will mark all drivers available in a newer version than the
ones installed, and the drivers not installed.
2. Select which drivers to install, and click Download.
Each driver is approximately 500 kB, and ready to use when the download is finished.
3. Restart the OPC server to get the new driver.

Installation of Driver from Disk

Drivers can also be installed and updated from a file in the PC environment.

To Install or Update Drivers from Disk:

1. Select File/Update drivers/from Disk.
2. Select the folder with the new drivers and open the mpd-file.
All drivers that can be installed are listed, and the version number of available drivers
and the version number of installed drivers are stated.
The function Mark Newer will mark all drivers available in a newer version than the
ones installed, and the drivers not installed.
3. Select which drivers to install, and click Install.
4. Restart the OPC server to get the new driver.

Driver Help File

The help file for each driver can be accessed from the property dialog of the driver.
Expand the tree view to display the help topics.

4.3 Arranging the Desktop

The different toolbars can be viewed or hidden, and moved around on the desktop.
A good way to get acquainted with the program is to view all toolbars at first, by selecting View and checking all the toolbars. Later on you can hide the ones not used
regularly. Some toolbars are dockable, and all of them can be dragged and dropped
on the desktop. Move the toolbars around in order to create a desktop that you are
comfortable with. Perhaps you prefer to place a toolbar on the right-hand side of the
desktop instead of at the top?
