3. Course Description
Aim: To equip students with the basic concepts and tools of Statistics, Probability and their respective
application in sciences and engineering.
Description: The course covers Basic Terminologies and tools in statistics, Data sampling and Presentation,
Simple (Linear) Regression and Correlation Analyses, Basic Terminologies in probability, Conditional
probabilities and Bayes Rule, Probability distributions, Application of the Theory of Reliability in
relation with exponential Probability distribution; Application of Chi Square Probability distribution
Parameter estimation and hypotheses testing.
4. Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course students will have the following attributes:
4.1 Knowledge
4.1.1 Identify Classification of data, Types of data, Data measurement scales and the different methods of data
collection.
4.1.2 Identify classification of Statistics, the different methods of sampling and presentations of data.
4.1.3.Comparing dependent and independent variables by using the concept of simple Regression and
Correlation Analyses.
4.1.4 Define sample space, events; mutually exclusiveness and dependence of events and analyze their
applications.
4.1.5 Identify basic random variables, Discrete and Continuous, and define their respective probability
distributions.
4.1.6 Identify classifications of Point and Interval Parameter Estimations.
4.2 Intellectual and Practical Skills
4.2.1 Chose the appropriate; Statistical method of data collection, Sampling Method.
4.2.2 Presenting data in Tabular, Graphical and Numeric form.
4.2.3 Determine Expected Value, Variance and moment of a random variable.
4.2.4 Develop a technique of hypotheses Testing for making inference on the population.
4.3 Attribute and Behavior
4.3.1 Appreciate the role of Statistics and probability in Engineering decision making
4.3.2 Develop Team Spirit.
