Learning activity 1
DESIGN OF FARMSTEAD ELECTRIFICATION
I.
INTRODUCTION
Farmstead is usually use for generalizing the farm buildings and adjacent service areas in the farms.
Farmstead is composed of farmhouse, poultry houses (broiler and grower house), and greenhouses for the
vegetable and/or fruit vegetables, slaughter house, milking parlor, cattle ranch and barn, pumping house and
ancillary facility.
In our modern day, service areas and buildings in the farms are all functioning using the electricity, which
provides them with light, heat, power for functioning the machines, cooling system and for communication to
transmit some data regarding to the production to the main house. But the distribution of the electricity is not that
easy. When planning for the building a farmstead we should consider the number of buildings and services areas
in farm. We should make a layout of the farm electrification. We should know how our electricity being
distributed to our farm buildings and we should plan on the number of farm equipment in every building to know
what amount of electricity being used by that building.
II.
OBJECTIVES
The general objective of the learning activity is to design a farmstead power distribution system.
Specifically the activity aims to:
1. Know the components of typical farmstead.
2. Identify the facilities and equipment present in the different farmstead.
3. calculate the power consumption of different facilities and equipment;
4. locate center load of different farmstead components and of the farmstead; and,
5. layout the farmstead.
III.
METHODOLOGY
1. Know the components of your farmstead as listed below:
a. 1 Farm house
b. 3 Poultry houses (1 broiler house, 2 grower houses)
c. 5 Greenhouses for vegetable and/or fruit vegetables
d. 1 Slaughterhouse
e. 1 Milking Parlor
f. 1 Cattle Ranch and 1 barn
g. 1 Pumping house
h. Ancillary facility (Street lights)
2. Design the orientation and area (dimensions) of your farmstead and its components.
3. List the facilities and equipment for each component that requires electricity. Quantify and consider the
watt rating and number of hours of operation/utilization of each facility/equipment per day.
Example: One of the facilities/equipment of your farm house is artificial lighting. You chose to install
3 pieces of incandescent bulbs and 7 pieces of fluorescent bulbs with 100 and 15 watts rating,
respectively. Ten incandescent bulbs will be used for an average of 5 hours per day and fifteen
fluorescent bulbs for 7 hours per day and per month (30 days per month). To calculate for the total
watt usage of lighting per day and per month for the farm house:
Lighting = (3 pcs x 100 W/pc x 5 hrs/day) + (7 pcs x 15 W/pc x 7 hrs/day) = 1500
Whr/day + 735 Whr/day
Lighting/day = 2,235 Whr/day
Lighting/month = 67,050 Whr/month Tabulate the result per farmstead component

Conclusion
A farmstead requires a large amount of the power to facilitate and run all the equipment for every building
in the farm. The milking parlor is the biggest consumer of the power , it consumes 26.84% of the farms whole
power consumption.2nd is the greenhouse having 23.28% , 3rd is the poultry house having 14.90%,slaughter house
12.07%, pumping house 10%, farmhouse 9.49 %, cattle ranch and barn 2% and ancillary having 1.31% of the
farms power requirement.
I conclude that electricity in the farmstead is the one of the most that contributes for the productivity of
the farm. The amount of the power consumes in the farm varies on the number of equipments available in every
farm building
