Walmart Professionalism

Professionalism is the act of a company holding itself in high esteem while being ethical and
giving of a sense of community with the company. Walmart has a certain company culture that
prides itself on having a professional environment in its workforce. Not only by having their
employees dress alike and professional but also by having them all act and behave the same.
Walmart has four key beliefs when it comes to professionalism, service customers, respect for
individuals, striving for excellence, and acting with integrity. Servicing the customers Walmart
makes customers their number one priority they also give back to the local communities in which
they have a location. Respecting the individual means value and recognize the contributions of
every associate, own what they do with a sense of urgency, and empower each other to do
the same, communicate by listening to all associates and sharing ideas and information. Their
mission for striving for excellence is about modeling a positive example for others to follow.
Lastly they have a mission to act with integrity is for employees be honest, fair and objective
with their peers.

Academics
Walmart Helps several students by offering scholarships. Some of their scholarships are
Sam Walton Community Scholarships, Associate Scholarships, Higher REACH
Scholarship. In previous years Walmart has provided up to $67 million in educational
initiatives, including teacher recognition programs, scholarships, educational
programs and support for local schools and universities. The company also supports
programs that improve graduation rates and adolescent literacy.

Application requirements vary depending on the career area you are viewing. The minimum age
required to work is 16 years of age. The higher positions within company depend on the college
level of education the person has received.

Character means having the strength and conviction to both lead and work with teams
made up of diverse social, cultural and economic viewpoints (Character). Wal-mart is a
company that understands the importance and benefit of diversity. All of this diversity helps
unlock a creative environment. New and different ideas can be shared to help drive innovation
and business growth (Opportunity). This innovation is what allows Wal-mart to remain a
powerhouse in the economy. They are continuously working toward a more diverse company
culture. Each year Wal-mart releases a Culture, Diversity, and Inclusion Report, regarding their
companies efforts at diversifying their work environment (Opportunity). Wal-marts workforce
consists of nearly 1.5 million associates, including more than 784,000 female associates; more
than 279,000 African-American associates; more than 185,000 Hispanic associates; more than
48,000 Asian associates. 56% of their associates in the U.S. are women (Opportunity). Ethnic
diversity is not the only goal though. Wal-mart also strongly focuses on more jobs for the
disabled, veterans, and women. On Memorial Day 2013, Wal-Mart introduced a new program for
all previous veterans who had been honorably discharged since the start of the commitment.
Since the start of this program, they have hired over 130,000 veterans (Opportunity). On top of
providing veterans with jobs, Wal-mart has done an incredible job hiring more disabled
employees. In 2016 Wal-mart earned a 100 on a Disability Equality Index survey (Opportunity).
Providing equal opportunity for for disabled workers shows strong character by Wal-mart. Walmarts work environment forces people to engage in diverse work groups. This is similar to the

philosophy the business school wants to instill within their students. Wal-mart was recognized
with prestigious awards in regards to their efforts in diversifying their company. A few of these
awards are 25 Noteworthy Companies by DiversityInc Magazine, Americas #1 Company for
Multicultural Business by DiversityBusiness.com, Top Companies for Executive
Women by the National Association for Executive Women, and many more (Opportunity).

Engagement
Walmart aims to develop communities through associates, customer, company engagement.
Walmart accomplishes through empowering associates to engage in their community. They have
associates whom spend their time, expertise and money towards local causes including education
health and wellness and hunger relief. The Walmart foundation has a long tradition of supporting
the communities where they operate by providing the community and regional grants to
organizations. In 2015 Walmart donated more than 56.5 Million dollars in community grants
within the U.S supporting hunger and eating healthy along with many other causes that help
strengthen the community. Walmart also works with non-profit organizations such as Pyxera
Global and Taproot to more systematically engage Walmart associates with particular technology
and leadership skills in disaster and technology related charitable effort in the United Stated and
India. All of these factors demonstrate how Walmart displays an expertise in engagement not
only in the united stated but in foreign areas as well not to mention the work they do locally in
areas where their stores are located.
