Super Pressure Mercury Lamps HBO are the result of research work and continuous
further development carried out for many years. The rnost outstanding features of these
lamps are: simple structure very small d menslons, ease of hand ing, peimanent readiness
tor operationi and by compressing the hlgh powered discharge into a m nimum space
an exceptionally high radiance and luminance could be achieved

OSRAM

Specia mention shoud be made of the intensty of radiation in the medium and long
wave ultraviolet regions, and the ease of modulating the luminous fux up to jOa cps
Desp te the hlgh concentrat on of power in a very smal enve ope H BO lam ps will operate

W2 and HBO 500 W/2 amps are exceptional y

wel suited for operation on direct current. Besides the optcal and construction;l
Among the DC,UAC lamps, the HBO 200

advantages for the installation of these lamps, operat on on direct current offers furlher
advantages as compared with AC-operation:

double amp life, mproved perlormance during stadng and warming-up, better arc
stabi ity

Super Pressure Mercury Lamps HBO are of specla impoftanoe whereveT a source of
rad auon having a hlgh umlnance (visible reglon) or a high radiance in the medium and
long wave ultravio et regons is needed Due to their srnal dimensons, the arnps can
be used at shod dlstance from any optica system with the resu lt that an opU m um utilizaUon
of the luminous or radiant flux is achieved The vanous lamp models and wattages
contained in the program of HBO amps offer therefore, a considerable selection for a

overal ength of the lamp s rna in y determined by the necessary temperature g rad ent
between the electrodes and the amp bases which governs the length of the fo ls.

The

The current-carrying foiis are designed for the maxirnurn lamp current existing during
the warming up period after stading (see section "Operation" on page B)
The shape of the diametr aa ly opposed electrodes is determ ned by the type of current
for which the padicular lamp type s suitable For therrnal emission reasons the HBO
100 W/1 and HBO I00 W,z2 lamps have a very small cathode (negative e ectrode),
whereas the anode is arge to make possib e a dissipation of heat

The electrodes of lamps a so suitable for AC operation have dentica shapes as both
of them are sublected to the same load

The bases of HBO lamps serve as suppoft and as current connecton to the lamps.

IBO lamps are equipped with sleeve bases. Types with higher wattages are additional y
provided with a threaded p n with knurled nut for current connection

The earljer amp types HBO 100 W/1, HBO 200 W, and HBO 500 W have a stafting
electrode at the side of the envelope. These lamps can be started wlth a vibrator ignition
device (See section lnqition on paoe 7)

Description

OSRAM

Light lntensity and Luminance

The ight ntensiry has been measured vertica ly to the larnp axis at the level of the
uminous arc. The values can be seen from ine I of the tab e The ight intenslty distrlbution
of HBO lamps is almost spherica ly symmetrical wlth the exception of those segments
of sol d angle wh ch are shadowed oft by the main e ectrodes, or by the stafting electrode
n lamps of older design. Consequently, aso the lur.rinous flux, the luminous efficacy
( ines 6 and 7 of table), and the radiant power of lamps without start ng electrode are
considerably greater than those of lamps with stading e ectrodes.

The va ues for the average luminance are stated on ine 9 of the tab e The reference
area for determining the light intensty in order to estabLish the average lum nance for
each individua lamp type consists of a rectangular section of the arc formed by the
he ght h (electrode spac ng of a amp in operat on) and the half wldth of luminancebof
the lum nous arc. The size of the um nous area can be found on iine 10 of the table.
The values for light intenslty as stated on line 8 of the table are valid for the entire arc
and are therefore, higher than the light lntensity derived from lumlnance and reference
area.

The spata distribution of luminance depends prmarily on the type of current. When
direct current is used, the spot of highest uminance is formed adjacent to the negative
electrode whereas a maximum is forrned adjacent to each e ectrode when the lamp ]s
operated on alternatinq current
Spectral Distribution of Radiation

The spectrum of radiation of the super pressure mercury d scharge is besldes of its
broad mercury ine pracucaly continuous and extends from the utravioet through
the vlsible nto the infrared with more or less the same intens ty. The vis b e propoftlon
ofthe radiation produces a buish-white lght. The relative spectral distributon of the
radiation of HBO lamps s shown in fig. 11

Lamp Life

The va ues for the average lamp ife as stated in the tab e ( ine 11) are based on a mean
operating time of 2 hours per starti t s important that the .ninimum operating time s
not less than 15 minutes (finished warm ng up period).

lf the nurnber of starts s greater, or if with Dcoperaton the pu sation of current

exceeds the upper lim t of 25% the life of HBO amps will be shortened.

pi

n the course of Lamp ife, a thin layer of evaporated e ectrode cnaterial deposits on the
nner wal of the envelope and causes a drop n the useful radiauon. This gradual process
can be slowed down by a ower number of starts resp. in the case of Dc-operation by a lower pulsation of current pi.

lnstallation in Devices

ol

Please, follow the lnstructions for Use which accompany each lamp

The danger of

are ultravlo et radiat on, and the high vapour pressure (only when the

lamp s operated) necess tates the instal ation of amps in housings provided with protected
vent lating vents.
HBO lamps do not requ re forced cool ng prov ded care is taken thai with a proper supply
and exhaust of coo ing air the temperature of the bases does not exceed 230'C durlng
operation. lf a cool ng by blower is provided, care should be taken that the enve ope
is not touched by the forced a r flow during warming up and subsequent operation.

IBO lamps must be fixed at one end only in order to prevent the occurrence of stTesses
in the quarlz body due to the different thermal expans on of the Lamp and its metal pads.
The current ead to the free base and possibly the starting electrode must be flexible
and free of tens le siress.
Further information about amp housings and installatlon of HBO lamps is contained
in a paper titled "Guide for the Design of Equ pment for Super Pressure Mercury
Lamps HBO lnterested parties may apply for a copy Upon request, hous ngs or equ pment can be tested and declared as suitable for operation with HBO lamps by the lamp

Ballasting Gear

Please note: The lamps are covered by a warranty only when the auxiliary equipment
used provides proper operating conditions for the lamp type concerned.
Besides an ignition device (see sect on "lgnition ), also a ballast is necessary for operating

HBO lamps.
When feeding ihe lamp from a direct current source wlth fixed output voltage (for instance
a batteg, a resistance must be inserted into the circuit. lf the current is supplied across

a rectifier, the lamp current may either be iimited wth a resistance or inductively. The
value of the padicular ohmic resistance can be ca culated from the difference betureen
the exisUng supply voltage and the lamp operating voltage.

OSRAM

The operating voltage of HBO 50 W,/3, HBO 100 W/1 and HBO 100 W,/2 increases in
the course of lamp life and makes necessary a reduction of the lamp current. Mains
operating sets approved by the lamp manufacturer stabilize the lamp power within the

determined llmits.
When using AC, the ballasting gear consists of a choke specifically adapted to the lamp
concerned. ln view of the unavo dable deviations in operating voltage, a simple, perma

nenty set choke cannot be used for HBO 50 W/AC, HBO 200 W, HBO 200 W2,

HBO 500 W, HBO 500 W2. The chokes are, therefore, provided with hvo taps (marked
Lr or Lt for the h,vo operating voltage ranges of the lamps (see line 3 of tab e). According
to its operating voltage (marking Lr or Lz on one of the knurled nuts and on the ower
base; with HBO 50 W,/AC on the upper base) the lamp shall be connected with the
correspondinq tap of the choke.
ln order not to endanger the lamp if and when a short circult to eadh occurs, the choke
shou d be wired into the phase lead and not into the neutra lead (see figs. I and 10).

Nlanufacturers

of power

supp ies

for HBO lamps are requested to apply for detailed

inforl.nation.

The amp manufacturer is prepared to test auxiliary equipment and give its approval if
all requirements for such equipment are met

The voltage required for stading HBO lamps is by far exceeding the supply votage.
The magnitude of the starting voltage depends on the starting conditions, i.e. whether
a amp shall be started only as long as it has a low interhal pressure (in cold state) or
also shortly after switching off when the internal pressure is very high (in hot state).
Decisive for selectinq a suitab e iqnition device or starter are:
type of lamp, design with or without starting eiectrode, length of ignition lead when using
superimposing gniters.

The frequency and surge votage of superimposing gnition devices Z1) are so high
that at any tirne, ie. also in a hot state, reliable starting is possible. The surge circuit is
designed for a maximum Iength of the igntion lead of 05 r.eters. The ipark gaps
incorporated in such ignition devices are subject to wear, depending on number and
duration of starts. Therefore, a spare spark gap should always be kepi on hand. Further
information is contained in the lnstructions for Use supplied with the igniter.
Vibrator ignition devices (22) serve to strike amps wth a starling electrode and may
be connected on the low vo tage end to either 220 V AC or DC. The high vo tage terminal
shall be connected with the stading electrode (see f g. 10). By brefly presslng down the
push button CD, the ignition device (Z) is activated, and the lamp will stad regardless of
whether it is in a hot or cold state. Sufficient insu ation of the ignition lead must be provided
for (stading voltage about 15 kV) in order to prevent flashovers to grounded metal parls
which generally will destroy the lamp. With ungrounded mains systems, the use of a

protective circuit with b,!o condensers Cr and

C: as shown in fig. 10 (page 4)

is

recommended also on that side of the igniter connected to the mains To start HBO 100 W/l
ln a cold state, it is sufflcient to place the ignition devlce near the base of the staning
electrode and to press down the push button.
Lamps wlthoutstarting electrode HBO 50 W/3, HBO 100 W /2,HBO 2AOW /2.HBO 350W,
and HBO 500 W,/2 may be siarted either hot or cod by means of a supermposing
ignition device. When operating HBO 2OO W/2 on AC, starting is inrpeded. ln order not

to overload the ignition device, more than three attempts to strike the lamp with a duration
of 5 6 seconds each in intervals of I minute each should not be made. These superimposing ignition devices are connected to 220 V AC by pressing down a push button
(see fig. 9 on page 4). The lamp current f ows through the output transformer whereby
the upper lamp end should be connected wth the high votage terminal. Superlmposing
igniters are also suitable for starting arnps with a stafting electrode, whereby the clrcuit
needs not to be changed. Care shou d be taken however, when using this circuit that the
free base of the stafting electrode has sufficient distance from grounded metal parts.
CENTRAo starler St 192 serves to strike HBO 50 WAC, HBO 75 W, and HBO 2OO W/4
Gee fig. B). lf the lamp should not stan at the first attempt, the starter St 192 will sw tch off
automatically after a while. ln order to get it ready for operation again, its push button

must be pressed down. A hot lamp cannot be restarted with CENTFA@ stafter St 192;

It must cool off first.

Further impodant informaUon about handiing HBO lamps s glven in the 'lnstructions
for Use suppled with each amp.

HBO lamp mode s 50 W and 100 W are fttted wtth sleeve bases without threaded pin;
t is advisable io fix one base by means of current-carrying clamping jaws. The current

of HBO 200 W and HBO 500 W is likewise fitted with

sleeve

At DC operat on, the positive po e of the lamp supply voitage must a ways be connected
with the stamped base which has to be positioned at the lower end.
When operating HBO 50 W/3, HBO 100 W/], and HBO 100 W/2, the (thicker) electrode
marked + must be pos tioned at the lower end (imprint on base to be uprighD. Reversed
po arity w I render these amps useless instantaneously.
The starl ng electrode of HBO 100 W/1, HBO 200 W, and HBO 500 W must never be
located above the luminous arc when the lamp s operated in an incllned position.
Operation
Warm ng up Period

The housing must be closed before the amp is put into operation.

After ign tion, an arc discharge takes

p ace in the bas c gas. Because of the heat ng effect

of the discharge, the accuraiely dosed quantity of mercury completely vapourizes within
a few rn nutes (warming up period) During th s process, the discharge which was wrder
at the beginning will contract to a naTrow lum nous arc of high lum nance. At the sarne
tirne, the internal vapour pressure incTeases. The inita discharge operates at a votage
of about 15 V which gradua ly increases to a constant va ue (see line 3 on table). The
ris ng voltage of the lamp reduces the lamp current from a higher initial value to ts
normal operating value. This warming up period is comp etely f nished after an operating
t me of 15 minutes (minimum operaUng tirne per stad.
