Journal title: The importance of teaching sequencing math lessons for children

Picture

Example for sequencing lessons:

Normal subtraction then mental subtraction after that subtract by
regrouping.

Journal body
Sequencing is the process of creating the linked events, concepts, objects together to
comprehend them in logical way. That is what happens in math lessons, the gradation is the
skill that the teacher has to master and apply it on her lessons. As also it considers the efficient
strategy to deliver the new idea for the young children.
The sequential sessions, for instance, at the beginning they include the engaging part, ask
questions, motivate students thinking, give real examples. As coming next is teaching pupils
the core part of the lesson by stories, exploring, tangible materials, manipulatives games, etc.
Then the educator could practice them with many several activities that could be in groups or
individuals. As well, for the next session the lesson will be build up on the last one that
explained. For example, grade three has to start with simple addition then addition with three

digits number, then strategies to mental addition, after that addition by carryingetc. Those
lessons are all related together, thus we concluded that the initial lessons have the essential
basics that the students have to acquire and achieve them. As consequence, the learners can
build the main structure of the general meaning. According to Building a Solid Math
Foundation, (2015) A solid math foundation is vital for children to succeed. As Students with
weak basic math skills find the subject increasingly confusing and difficult (and get poor
grades).
The problem that I saw at school is that, sometimes teachers reviewing math concepts out of
sequence. The remarkable, I noticed that some students have got several misconceptions in
math lesson because that mentioned reason which is not sequential lesson for example teacher
teach addition with one digit numbers then jump to 3 digits or more. Another example that I
fell in it is that I taught a subtraction by regrouping lesson for grade three as they studied this
lesson for first time, once I demonstrated this lesson I regrouping twice in the same question.
According to that I had to regroup in subtraction question one time for first lesson then give
students more complex. As a result, some students found that lesson so hard.
The solution to overcome this issue is that the primary teachers required to instill the solid
math foundation on the students mind by giving gradual and systematic lessons and also give
lesson ordered from easy to more complicated.

Journal title: Displays are important teaching tool

Picture

There are no displays in most of classes

Journal body
The display is very beneficial teaching tool, as it considers one of the most basics teaching
aids. The teacher could use it for several targets in her classroom such as for teaching lessons
or for the students management. Furthermore, using different methods to present the parts of
display could play effectively to promote the different students understanding levels. For

example, for one part on display uses pictures for visual students while another part uses
tangible materials, such as drawing activity, or games or toys that students can be interactive
with them for the kinesthetic students. In addition, another part has story with audio CD can
the teacher play it for the auditory students.
On the other hand, the display is one of the efficient strategies, which has an essential role in
the teaching field. That to enhance learning and gives the students opportunities to share with
building the display by making them in a creative world able to:
design and generate the different ideas on their minds, and then convey them on the real life.
The Importance of Display in the Primary Classroom, (n.d).

What should display reflect?

Who can make the display?
What is the role of the display?
Any display should reflect essentially students work, particularly, in the primary classrooms.
That to be more educated, motivated, and promoted for the students skills. But it is also
developed by the teacher works as a supervisor and director to guide the students in a required
way, which achieves objectives and obtains the benefits from the subject knowledge. Because
children need to recognize the purpose of the display by participating their works on it.
Moreover, when the students share with teacher with establishing the display that makes them
more awareness about what this display illustrates. The interactive display which lets the
students work on it for a long time such as the display has management strategies, it makes the
students more organized as also manage their behaviors at the class. So, it considered as a
motivation for teaching them useful things such as be committed, clean, organized and
respectiveetc.

Teacher should take into her account when making displays:

The display should be:
1.

Included students works with care about their different levels.

2. Organized, neat, clear information.

3. Obvious objectives for this display also clear subheadings for each area.
4. More related with grades curriculum to be more educated for the students and to
obtain the benefits from it.
Using attractive, colorful, visually stimulating, engaging materials.

I agree with this statement, which says, effective classroom displays are the most powerful
and overlooked tools for teaching. (Clayton, 2001). Through my teaching practices I
observed several schools in the RAK city. However, from my experience I really saw many
classrooms are not applied any displays. For Ruffida school in my class specially there isnt
any display, the class is empty. There are many teachers are not aware about the importance
and power of displays as the tools for teaching in the classrooms. Maybe for the primary
classrooms there are more displays than the secondary and elementary classrooms. But still the
most educators think that the students do not require these displays, they are only as
complementary and design. They think that displays are only waste the time of the sessions.
They do not understand the displays could make very creative students able to be as thoughtful
thinker. Specifically, for math classrooms there have to make a display that provide students
opportunities to learn. Where the students could find helpful material to explore and make sense of
the different operations, basics of math such as comparing signs, names of shapes, units of
measurement, prime, even, and odd numbers, types of linesetc. Moreover, that display will aid
students to memorize, recognize several mathematical basics and remember them when they solve the

questions. Thus, we as teachers have to publish the importance of displays how educated they

are? How useful, stimulated, motivated for the students. The display I think is very effective
element to comprehend the subjects and obtain the knowledge. As the display is one of the
successful techniques in the classrooms environment could has a large impact on childrens
learning. Hannah, (2013).
And also the principals at schools have a big role to encourage the teachers to do the most
beautiful display by making competition between them.

Journal title: Using manipulatives and models

Picture

Journal body
Math manipulatives have been played an active role in math to increase the opportunities for
introducing the concepts and help students as well to comprehend them. Moreover, they are
used to facilitate solving problems, build the students knowledge, improve their math skills
and gain them the entertainment to learn.

As I noticed through my teaching practice and I believed on that how the games and the
concrete objects enhance the students to study and learn. Instead of students listen to the
educator and then work out with the problems on a worksheet, or read the math concept, they
will treat with manipulatives and use their physical movement to more advantageous
education.

The math concrete items could start from having blocks to give preschooler till using more
complicated items for older level such as in grade 6 where they can apply fraction models to
grasp the ideas. So, I concluded that there are no selected ages to use these items to explore
and find out the math lesson hypothesis and how it is working.

I attended to several different math classes to different students levels, and I saw how
efficient they use the manipulatives. For example, for grade 1 they have been used the blocks
to recognize the counting, addition, and subtraction. On the other hand, for grade six they have
also been used the fractions models to understand the notion of equivalent fractions.

Furthermore, I have taught a math lesson that entirely depends on exploring. Thus, I observed
that the students like there are a lamp that light on their heads, that intended to tell me they got
the concept slightly.

I supposed that the manipulates give the students a wide range to think, move, engage,
discover and grasp the knowledge smoothly. In the past and still continue until now, what
happens is that the pupils are limited their abilities by solving worksheets and all that they
have to do is only catch their pencils. Therefore, there are lots of students who dont
accomplish of using sheet and pins. Regard that; I would like to say that, the teachers have to
manipulate their students with tangible tools to get their learners full involved senses of touch
and sight.

Manipulatives make the students more pleasurable about mathematics. As many students
straggle with math works and make them get bored, but the playing and exploring with math
instruments make the problems uncomplicated to solve. According to Frost (2016) mentioned
that Even when a worksheet or written assignment is required, the manipulatives can make
the problems easier and more interesting to solve.
