SPECIFICATION
STRUCTURAL STEEL DESIGN

4.4

[R] Closed structural shapes, such as tubes, pipes and box members, are not permitted
unless approved by the Company. When such shapes are approved for use, special
precautions to prevent internal corrosion shall be taken.

4.5

[R] Special materials, coating protection or increased material thickness shall be used
where structural elements are subject to severe corrosion or wear.

4.6

Where connecting dissimilar metals will cause galvanic corrosion, a suitable insulation
material shall be provided between the metals.

4.7

[R] Use of high-strength and micro-alloy steel for structures at service temperatures less
than 0C (32F) shall be approved by the Company.

4.8

[R] Only galvanized fasteners shall be used to connect galvanized structural members.

4.9

[R] Coated fasteners shall be used for painted structural members.

4.10

[S] Where structural members, having a thickness > 12mm (0.5in), are subjected to
tensile stresses from dynamic or impact operating loads, the material impact property
requirements shall be reviewed and approved by the Company, when the minimum
service temperature can reach below -18C (0F).

DESIGN
5.1

Structural steel design shall be in accordance with AISC 360, AISC 341, and the AISC
Steel Construction Manual.

5.2

For cold-formed steel, design shall be in accordance with AISI S100.

5.3

Steel joists shall be designed in accordance with SJI standards.

5.4

Design loads and combinations including the service and performance criteria in steel
design shall be in accordance with IQWQ-FT-NSPDS-00-040103, Design Loads for
Structures, Equipment and Other Facilities.

5.5

Steel design, including steel joists and metal decking, shall be designed in accordance
with OSHA 29 CFR 1926, Subpart R, to provide structural stability during erection and
to protect employees from the hazards associated with steel erection activities.
5.5.1

All column base plates shall be designed with a minimum of four anchor bolts.
Posts (which weigh less than 136 kg [300 lb]) are distinguished from columns
and are excluded from the four anchor bolt requirement.

5.5.2

Columns, column base plates, and their foundations shall be designed to resist a
minimum eccentric gravity load of 136 kg (300 lb) located 450 mm (18 inches)
from the extreme outer face of the column in each direction at the top of the

column shaft. Column splices shall be designed to meet the same load resisting
characteristics as those of the columns.
5.5.3

Double connections through column webs or at beams that frame over the tops of
columns shall be designed so that at least one installed bolt remains in place to
support the first beam while the second beam is being erected. The Fabricator
may also supply a seat or equivalent device with a means of positive attachment
to support the first beam while the second beam is being erected.

5.5.4

Structural members of framed metal deck openings shall be turned down to allow
continuous decking, except where not allowed by design constraints or
constructability. The openings in the metal deck shall not be cut until the hole is
needed.

5.5.5

Shear stud connectors that will project vertically from or horizontally across the
top flange of the member shall not be attached to the top flanges of beams, joists,
or beam attachments until after the metal decking or other walking/working
surface has been installed.

5.6

[S] [R] All field connections to coated or galvanized structural steel shall be bolted.

5.7

Compression flanges of floor beams, not supporting equipment, may be considered

braced by decking (concrete or floor plate) if positively connected thereto.

5.8

Grating shall not be considered as lateral bracing for support beams.

5.9

[R] High Strength Bolt Assemblies and Standard Bolt Assemblies shall be as defined in
specification IQWQ-FT-NSPDS-00-0018, Structural Steel Fabrication. Bolt assembly
application shall be as follows:
5.9.1

Connections for Structural Members High Strength Bolt Assemblies

5.9.2

Connections for Railings, Ladders, Purlins, and Girts Standard Bolt Assemblies

5.10

When bolt pre-tensioning is required, the bolt pre-tension shall be achieved by use of
direct tension indicator washers. Other methods of bolt pre-tensioning (e.g. turn-of-thenut) require Company approval.

5.11

Minimum thickness of bracing gusset plates shall be 10 mm (3/8 inch).

5.12

[R] For structural elements subject to prolonged exposure to heat above 93C (200F),
allowable design stress shall be reduced in proportion to reductions in yield strength of
the steel at the design temperature. The modulus of elasticity shall also be reduced to
account for the effect of elevated temperature.

ATTACHMENT 1 : PURPOSE CODE DEFINITIONS

Code

Description

[A]

Assigned to paragraphs that require approval from the Companys Engineer before the work
may proceed or the design is finalized.

[C]

Assigned to paragraphs containing specifications whose primary purpose is reduced costs.

Reduced cost in this context refers to initial investment cost and does not include Life-Cycle
cost considerations. Life-Cycle cost considerations are captured under reliability,
maintainability, or operability purpose codes.

[E]

Assigned to paragraphs containing specifications whose primary purpose is driven by

environmental considerations. Environmental considerations typically include specifications
intended to protect against emissions/leakage to the air, water, and/or soil. Deviations from the
specifications contained in such paragraphs require formal review and approval according to
local environmental policy.

[I]

Assigned to paragraphs that provide only clarifying information such as Scope statements,
definitions of terms, etc.

[M]

Assigned to paragraphs containing specifications whose primary purpose is to provide for

maintainability of equipment or systems. Maintainability provisions are those that facilitate the
performance of maintenance on equipment/systems either during downtimes or during onstream operations.

[O]

Assigned to paragraphs containing specifications whose primary purpose is to assure

operability of equipment or systems. Operability is the ability of the equipment/system to
perform satisfactorily even though conditions are off-design, such as during start-ups, process
swings, subcomponent malfunction, etc.

[R]

Assigned to paragraphs containing specifications whose primary purpose is to improve or

assure the reliability of equipment or systems. Reliability is a measure of the ability of
equipment/systems to operate without malfunction or failure between planned maintenance
interventions.

[S]

Assigned to paragraphs containing specifications whose primary purpose is avoidance of

personnel or operational safety incidents. Any deviation from the specifications contained in
such designated paragraphs requires formal review and approval according to local safety
policy.
Personnel Safety:

Refers to the avoidance of recordable personnel injuriese.g., burns,

cuts, abrasions, inhalation, or exposure to dangerous substances, etc.,
that could result in medical treatment, restricted work, lost-time incidents,
or fatalities.

Operational
Safety:

Refers to the prevention and control of process releases, fires,
