Migrating to the ANSYS, Inc. License

Manager
The information in this guide applies only to the ANSYS, Inc. License Manager, and the tools that we
provide to manage it (such as ANSLIC_ADMIN). ANSYS FLUENT, ANSYS POLYFLOW, and ANSYS Icepak
work with the ANSYS, Inc. License Manager at Release
14.5. You can continue using your legacy licensing
for these products, but we recommend upgrading to
the ANSYS, Inc. License Manager. Ansoft products
continue to use only the Ansoft License Manager at
this time.

Important Notices
The ANSYS, Inc. License Manager and its associated
processes have been updated at Release 14.5; please
carefully review the ANSYS, Inc. Licensing Guide for
more information on these updates. Because of these
updates, you must upgrade to the Release 14.5 License Manager in order to run ANSYS 14.5
products. The 14.5 ANSYS, Inc. License Manager supports prior ANSYS releases, so upgrading the license
manager will not cause problems for prior releases.
The instructions provided in this document assume
that you will be managing your licensing environment
using the tools we provide (e.g., ANSLIC_ADMIN). If
you will be using your own established processes to
manage your licensing environment, the instructions
provided here may not apply. Please thoroughly review the ANSYS, Inc. Licensing Guide to understand
the changes, and then refer to the section titled Advanced Licensing Configuration Options for detailed
instructions.

On Windows machines, you have access to both a full

server version of the ANSLIC_ADMIN utility and a
limited-functionality client version. Please refer to the
ANSLIC_ADMIN discussion in the ANSYS, Inc. Licensing
Guide for details on when you should use each version.

Overview
The intent of this Quick Start Licensing Guide is to
give you a simple overview of the steps required to
install the 14.5 ANSYS, Inc. License Manager and license keys on a license server machine.
The term ANSYS 14.5 is used throughout this guide
to refer to all ANSYS 14.5 products.
To install ANSYS 14.5 and the client licensing, follow
the instructions in the ANSYS, Inc. Installation Guide
for your platform.
If you are installing in a three-license server environment, the procedures below must be performed on
all three license servers.

I. I am an existing customer with an existing valid license key. How do I proceed?

If you are an existing customer with a valid license
key, you will not receive a new one until your existing
key expires. When you receive your ANSYS 14.5
package, follow the steps below:
1.

Install ANSYS 14.5 products following the instructions

in the ANSYS, Inc. Installation Guide for your platform.
The product installation includes the client licensing.

2.

On Windows, from the installation launcher

(setup.exe), choose Install ANSYS, Inc. License
Manager to run the license manager installation on
all license server machines.
On UNIX/Linux, run ./INSTALL.LM.

3.

Follow the on-screen instructions to specify the installation location. On Windows machines, you must install
into your <os drive> (usually C:\). On UNIX/Linux
machines, you must install relative to the product installation (i.e., at the same root level directory as the
product install).

4.

When the License Wizard runs, be sure that the default

Type of License Server option, Run the ANSYS Licensing
Interconnect with FLEXlm, is selected and click Continue.

5.

When asked to install the license file, click Skip. On

the following steps, specify this machine as a license
server and choose to start the ANSYS, Inc. License
Manager. Exit the installation screens.

You are now ready to run ANSYS 14.5.

II. I am a new customer and did not receive

a key with my ANSYS 14.5 package.
If you are a new customer, or you are an existing
customer using the ANSYS, Inc. license manager for
the first time with your product(s), and you did NOT
receive a license key with your ANSYS 14.5 package,
follow the steps below:

5.

Select Skip for each of the following three steps: install a license file, specify the local machine as a license server, and start the ANSYS, Inc. License Manager. Exit the installation screens.

6.

Start the ANSLIC_ADMIN utility:

On Windows, run: Start> Programs> ANSYS,
Inc. License Manager> Server ANSLIC_ADMIN
Utility. On Windows 7/Vista, you must Run as
Administrator.
or
On UNIX/Linux, run: /ansys_inc/shared_files/licensing/lic_admin/anslic_admin

7.

Select Register License Server Information and enter

the requested information. Select OK. The licserv-

er.info window should appear. Click on Create file

and save the file.
8.

Forward the licserver.info file to your ANSYS

sales representative so that a license key can be created for you.

9.

When you receive a key from ANSYS, Inc., save the

file to a temporary directory.

10. From the ANSLIC_ADMIN utility (use the Server ANSLIC_ADMIN utility on Windows machines), choose
the Run the License Wizard option. The wizard will
walk you through the process of installing your license, specifying the license server, and starting the
license manager.
You are now ready to run ANSYS 14.5.

Type of License Server option, Run the ANSYS Licensing
Interconnect with FLEXlm, is selected and click Continue.

5.

When asked to install the license file, click Continue.
