BIO121 CELL BIOLOGY FALL 2016

ANDERSON

ASSIGNMENT #1

Assignment #1
Due Friday, September 16th at noon (submit as a journal entry in Moodle)
This assignment is worth 6 points
A review article entitled The New Bacterial Cell Biology: Review
Moving Parts and Subcellular Architecture has been posted to Moodle.
In this paper, the authors discuss homologs between prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cytoskeletal proteins. Please note that two genes or proteins are
homologs if they have arisen from the same ancestral gene and have related
structure and/or function.
Read the highlighted portions of the article and write a 1-paragraph
summary of the article. Please include the following in your summary:
1. Why was it previously believed bacteria did not need a cytoskeleton?
2. What are the three bacterial cytoskeletal elements and to which
eukaryotic cytoskeletal elements are they most similar?
3. What are the main functions of each bacterial cytoskeletal element?
Are these similar to or different from their counterpart in eukaryotic
cells?
Important notes:
For this assignment, you are to summarize in your own words. Do not simply
copy/paste from the article or write terms that you do not know the meaning
of. I encourage you to use additional resources, including your textbook, to
assist you in completing this assignment. If you do use outside sources,
please list them at the bottom of your response.
This assignment will be submitted as a journal entry in Moodle. Please
complete the assignment in Word and then copy/paste into Moodle.
