Tutorial EUM113 Chapter 1 (Concepts of Function)

1. During the economy crisis, the labour costs fall by 5% for the first year. The costs continue to
fall with a double effect from the year before. Let L(t ) = initial labour cost of year t ,
formulate the labour costs for the next two years period in mathematical formulation. If the
labour cost continues to behave the same pattern after 2 years, what is the labour cost of year
n.

[Answer]: Year : 1(0.05)(1), =1,2,3,

2. Represent the number of days for the months in a leap year in form of arrow diagram.
3. The incomplete information for the voltage based on the Ohm's law, V = IR is given in Table

4. In box manufacturing industry, two main assembly lines are the conveyor line and box
assembly line. A number of workers are placed in the first line. The number of workers
allocated in the second line is half the number of those placed in the first line. The assembly
lines run in two 8 hours shifts on daily basis. If the industry is hiring its first and second
assembly line workers on daily labour charges of RM 23 per hour and RM 19 per hour
respectively. Represent the total labour costs the industry spent on both assembly lines per
day in mathematical function for the event if 1 to 5 workers are allocated in the first line.

5. Determine whether the following are 1-1 functions.

8. A standard equation called the Scale Height is often used in metrological studies to estimate
atmospheric pressure as a function of altitude. The Scale Height equation is given by

Ph = Po e

Mgh
RT

where
M

= average molar mass of air (28.92 g/mol)

= gravitational acceleration (9.81 ms-2)

= height (m)

= gas constant (8.314 Jmol-1deg-1)

= absolute temperature (Kelvin)

Ph

= pressure at new altitude (Pa)

Po

= pressure at sea level (1.01 x 105 Pa)

Say if the relation between and is studied at fixed at = 260 K, determine if the relation

shows an onto function.

[Answer]: Onto
