Updating the Switch Software Image


TheswitchsoftwareimageistheexecutablecoderunningontheG8052.Aversion
oftheimagecomespreinstalledonthedevice.Asnewversionsoftheimageare
released,youcanupgradethesoftwarerunningonyourswitch.Togetthelatest
versionofsoftwaresupportedforyourG8052,gotothefollowingwebsite:
http://www.support.lenovo.com/
Todeterminethesoftwareversioncurrentlyusedontheswitch,usethefollowing
switchcommand:
RS G8052#

showversion

Thetypicalupgradeprocessforthesoftwareimageconsistsofthefollowingsteps:

LoadanewsoftwareimageandbootimageontoanFTPorTFTPserveronyour
network.

Transferthenewimagestoyourswitch.

Updating VLAG Switches with Lenovo Networking OS 8.x


Followingarethestepsforupdatingthesoftwareimageandbootimagefor
switchesconfiguredwithVLAG:
1. Savetheconfigurationonbothswitchesusingthefollowingcommand:
RS G8052(config)#copyrunningconfigurationstartupconfiguration

2. UseTFTPorFTPtocopythenewOSimageandbootimageontobothvLAG
switches.
3. ShutdownallportsexcepttheISLportsandthehealthcheckportontheprimary
switch(Switch1).
Note: Donotsavethisconfiguration.
4. ReloadSwitch1,Switch2willassumethevLAGprimaryrole
5. OnceSwitch1hasrebooted,Switch1willtakethesecondaryrole.
6. ShutdownallportsexcepttheISLportsandthehealthcheckportonSwitch2.
Note: Donotsavethisconfiguration.
7. ReloadSwitch2,Switch1willreassumethevLAGprimaryswitchrole.

Loading New Software to Your Switch


TheG8052canstoreuptotwodifferentswitchsoftwareimages(calledimage1
andimage2)aswellasspecialbootsoftware(calledboot).Whenyouloadnew
software,youmustspecifywhereitshouldbeplaced:eitherintoimage1,image2,
orboot.
Forexample,ifyouractiveimageiscurrentlyloadedintoimage1,youwould
probablyloadthenewimagesoftwareintoimage2.Thisletsyoutestthenew
softwareandreloadtheoriginalactiveimage(storedinimage1),ifneeded.
Attention:Whenyouupgradetheswitchsoftwareimage,alwaysloadthenew
bootimageandthenewsoftwareimagebeforeyouresettheswitch.Ifyoudonot
loadanewbootimage,yourswitchmightnotbootproperly(Torecover,see
RecoveringfromaFailedSoftwareUpgradeonpage 10).
Toloadanewsoftwareimagetoyourswitch,youwillneedthefollowing:

TheimageandbootsoftwareloadedonanFTPorTFTPserveronyournetwork.
Note: Besuretodownloadboththenewbootfileandthenewimagefile.

Whenthesoftwarerequirementsaremet,usethefollowingproceduresto
downloadthenewsoftwaretoyourswitch.
1. InPrivilegedEXECmode,enterthefollowingcommand:
RS G8052(config)# copy{sftp|tftp|ftp}{image1|image2|bootimage}

2. EnterthehostnameorIPaddressoftheFTPorTFTPserver.
Addressornameofremotehost:<nameorIPaddress>

3. Enterthenameofthenewsoftwarefileontheserver.
Sourcefilename:<filename>

Theexactformofthenamewillvarybyserver.However,thefilelocationis
normallyrelativetotheFTPorTFTPdirectory(forexample,tftpboot).
4. IfrequiredbytheFTPorTFTPserver,entertheappropriateusernameand
password.
5. Theswitchwillpromptyoutoconfirmyourrequest.

Onceconfirmed,thesoftwarewillbeginloadingintotheswitch.
6. Whenloadingiscomplete,usethefollowingcommandstoenterGlobal
Configurationmodetoselectwhichsoftwareimage(image1orimage2)youwant
toruninswitchmemoryforthenextreboot:
RS G8052# configureterminal
RS G8052(config)# bootimage{image1|image2}

Thesystemwillthenverifywhichimageissettobeloadedatthenextreset:

7. Reboottheswitchtorunthenewsoftware:

BGP Pre Append AS path


ThisenhancementfacilitatestheprocessofroutingmapsbyinfluencingtheBGP
routeselectionsothatonepathispreferredoveranother.Thisisespeciallyuseful
whencustomersaredualhometotwodifferentInternetServiceProviders(ISPs)
andtheywanttohaveaprimarypathtooneISPandusetheotherISPasabackup
path.

Dynamic ARP Inspection


ThisenhancementenablesthedevicetointerceptandexamineallARPrequests
andresponsepacketsinasubnet.Thefeaturediscardsthosepacketswithinvalid
IPtoMACaddressbindings.Thiscapabilityprotectsthenetworkfromsome
maninthemiddleattacks.
