EDITORIAL
At the end of last year, we took a look at some of the most interesting research
projects going on, and predicted that each of them would have a breakout moment in
2011. LightPeak, now known as Thunderbolt, has found considerable success even in the
niche Macintosh market to which it is currently confined2012 will see a mainstream
breakout. We looked at research into many-core parallel processors, and as predicted,
Intel has made huge strides with its Knights Corner 50-core processor which is already
headed to a new generation of supercomputers. Memristors are an exciting new kind of
storage component, but while significant progress has been made on developing them,
it might be another year or more before they will become commercial products. We
examined hybrid display panel technology that would not require power to maintain a
static image on screen. While these arent commercial yet either, theyve been
demonstrated in action and panel self-refresh should become quite the buzzword
next year (along with massively improved battery life in portable devices). Finally, we
looked at gesture-based input and 3D without glasses. Microsofts Kinect effort has
paid off in unimaginably diverse waysapplications for everything from robot-assisted
surgery to virtual clothes fittings have been created. Motion wont replace our
keyboards and mice anytime soon, but its going to be a huge part of our
interactions with machines in the near future.
In this issue, we bring you another kind of look into the futurethe status
of artificial intelligence. While robots today can register sensory inputs just as
well as humans, it's the way our brain processes them that still sets us apart.
We've also got expert views on the future of humancompute interaction,
and an examination of what lies in store for CPUs, the most fundamental
building blocks of all our computers and gadgets.
Here's wishing everyone a happy new year!

Getting down to actual business, between all the
tablets, my first choice would be to pick the
Samsung Galaxy tab P750. The reasonawesome
looks, slim body, light weight and sheer
performance. If you take a look at the scores in the
tables, you can see that it also tops the battery test
and is also the best tablet in sheer performance.

t isnt surprising to nd people
replacing their phones twice or
more each year. With the amazing
pace at which new models are being
released all the time, yesterdays
phones are becoming outdated all
too quickly. If, on the other hand, you
intend for your phone to last you
several years, there are a number
of factors you need to decide upon.
First, as always, is the budget.
Even phones priced at under Rs
5,000 now come with cameras and
multimedia playback. If youre buying
a phone in this price band, youll
have to choose between established
brands and the newer so-called
Chinese import brands of which a
countless number have sprung up.
Make sure youre comfortable with
phones

affordable and
exible, at the risk of being
a bit inconsistent and difficult to use.
BlackBerrys give users the popular
BBM messenger, so the choice will
also be inuenced by what your
friends use.
Software should also play a big
part in your choice of a smartphone.
iOS and Android have the best app
stores, with iOS being safer and
easier to use, while Android offers
much more choice at the cost of
adding complexity. iOS also has the
best selection of games at present.

CPUs
t might seem like there are only
two major choices when it comes
to CPUsIntel and AMDbut in
reality, your choice should really be
about which company has the best
product in your price range. The
choice of CPU will determine the
motherboard you need to buy (and
vice versa), so consider the price of
both CPU and motherboard when
comparing the prices of models
across company lines.
At the highest end, there really
isnt much choice. Weve been
waiting nearly a year to test AMDs
high-performance comeback chip,
formerly codenamed Zambezi, but
its performance has disappointed
BETTER HEATSINKS: All CPUs come with heatsinkfan units, but you might want to spend a little
money on a high quality third-party cooler if youre
concerned about high temperatures or want to
reduce noise. Choose coolers with copper bases and
heatpipes, which are more effective than aluminum.

ike many other PC components
these days, motherboard
manufacturers such as Asus,
Gigabyte and MSI are dependent
on the chipsets that come from
Intel and AMD. It is the chipset that
really determines a motherboards
features and the kind of CPUs it will
work with. Intel currently offers the
6-series chipsets (P67, H67 and Z68)
for its second-gen Core CPUs, and
AMD offers the 900 series (990FX,
990X, 970) for current FX and
Phenoms, and A75/A55 for the lower
end A-series integrated APUs.
Once youve decided which
CPU/chipset combination you
want to buy on the basis of price
and performance, you can start

some types of work such as design

Verdict
Robots are just at the beginning of their evolution and they
already have two advantages over human beings: they do not
have muscles which get tired, and their worn out parts can
be replaced easily. The self-proclaimed goal of RoboCups
organizers is to beat every world champion team by 2050.
Experts do not rule out this possibility. Robots still cannot move
like living beings, but tremendous progress has been made in the
last 15 years. We still have 39 years till 2050. However, even the
researchers at RoboCup have a joke about whether the robots
will actually be able to compete against humans they cannot
imagine that anybody would like to insure the human footballers

interested in thinking about what the

are thinking about the next generation

more interesting to ask about the next
generation of relationships. At the
moment we have a set of relationships
between devices and people that require
people to do a lot of work. We spend a
lot of time looking after our deviceswe
have to plug them in, give them power,
give them content, passwords and
drivers and network keys blah blah
blah! They dont work half the time, we
have to reboot themtheyre incredibly
demanding. If ones partners behave
the way our devices do, we would have
dumped them years ago. Theyd be
totally one-way relationships which
would be utterly unsatisfactory. If we
think about the current generation of

new humancompute input, new IO:
