Reflection
Going into teaching the Social Skills lesson to the nine 4th/5th grade students, I was very
nervous. A number of thoughts crossed my mind, Will all of the students be in attendance?,
Would they listen to me?, Would a student have an outburst during my lesson? Would I know
how to handle it?, Will the students be engaged in the lesson? Many of these questions and
fears worried me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my worries and fears did not come to
fruition. The students were very well behaved- stayed seated, worked quietly, did not speak out
of turn, attempted to participate in the lesson, etc.
Overall, I would say my lesson was effective in that the students were silent they were
not talking or whispering to each other when I was talking and presenting the material. Only two
of the students (who I have observed actively participating in previous class periods) were not as
active in participating as I had thought they would be. I was able to present all aspects of the
lesson and had a solid beginning, middle, and ending. All students listened, completed the
worksheet, and attempted to the best of their understanding. Looking back, I think I should have
talked less in order for the students to talk more. In a perfect world, I would have wanted to have
the students lead the discussion and figure it out on their own, with my guidance. In the future,

to help reinforce the social skill presented, I would try to incorporate the idea of being mindful
into daily lessons and activities where I see fit. When an opportunity arises, I would try to
discuss with my students to think about what other classmates may be going through in order to
try and understand their actions and feelings.

Reflection
I was unable to present this lesson to my students. Based on the positive results from the
first lesson, my expectations for this lesson would be very high. I would expect the same respect
and attentiveness that I received the first time. For the second lesson, I would be aware that the
students are able to act appropriately, however, I would be cognizant of the fact that out bursts
happen and think of how I would handle those situations, too. By creating an academic lesson
related to a social skill, I was able to see how easy it is to apply the skills and find ways to
incorporate them into daily academics.
