Therearemanydifferentcategoriesofsteel,andcarbonsteelsareonesuchcategorythat
contains0.12to2%carboninthem.Thesteelgainshardnessandstrengthwithheat
treatmentwhenthecarbonpercentagecontentincreaseshoweveritsductilityisreduced.
AISI1018carbonsteelisafreemachininggradethatisthemostcommonlyavailable
gradearoundtheworld.Althoughitsmechanicalpropertiesarenotveryunique,itstillcan
beeasilyformed,machined,weldedandfabricated.

thickersectionsofover4in.,Rc2830canbeobtained.

Intermediateannealinghastobeperformedtoovercomethealloystendencytowork
harden.
Annealing
Completeannealingofthisalloycanbeachievedbysoakingat899C(1650F)followed
byfurnacecooling.Processannealingcanbedoneat649C(1200F).

AISI1018carbonsteeliscommonlyusedinhighvolumescrewmachineparts
