CHAPTER 1

Before reading:
1. What do you know so far about your study opotion, civil engineering?
2. In what reasons do you choose civil engineering as your study?
3. What are the benefits of studying civil engeneering?
Answer:
1. Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with
the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally
built environment. Put simply, civil engineers build bridges, roads,
canals, dams, tall buildings, and other large structures.
2. Civil egineering is very interesting field and challenging, civil
engineering can be applied directly in daily life
3. Civil engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the
environment in which we live. It provides the facilities for day-to-day
life and for transport and industry to go about its work.

Reading text:
Civil engeneering is a field of engineering related to the design,
planning, construction and maintenance of buildings, dams, bridges, tunnels,
highways and other structure by the use of physical laws. Mhatematical
equations, the gowernment, by themselves as contractors or in universities
as researchwrs or lecturers. They can be surveyors, a technical report writer
or a project manager. Civil engineers must utilize their available resoutces to
complete the project, keeping in mind time, hazards environmental issues
and cost. It is civil engineers job to manage all of these.
Civil Engineering is the oldest, broadest and most useful field of
engeneering because they desugn things we use every day. Civil Engineering
is divided in these sub-catagories:
1.Structural engineering
Structural engineering is concerned with the design of
bridges, buildings, off shore oil platforms, dams, etc.Structural design and
structural analysis are components of structural engineering and a key
compenent in the structural design process. This involves computing the

stresses and forces at work within a structure. There are some structural

engineers who work in non-typical areas, designing aircraft ,spacecraft and
even biomedical devices.Major design concerns are seismic resistant
structure.
2.Geotechnical engineering
The main subject of the studies also known as soil mechanics is concerned
with oil properties, mechanies of soil particles, compression and swelling of
soils,seepage,slope,retaining walls,foundations,footings,ground and roc
anchors, use of synthetic tensile materials in soil structures,soil-structure
interaction and soil dynamics.Geotechnical engineering covers this field of
studies for application in engineering. The importance of geotechnical
engineering can hardly be overstated:buildings must be supported by
reliable foundation. In the world as overall, civil engineering plays important
role to keep people build their own building and creativities
