Service Training

Whether the engine fuel system, the dual clutch gearbox, the
infotainment system or any one of a number of driver assistance
systems a modern vehicle would cease to function without
electrical and electronic equipment.
A high-performance alternator, a battery rated for the vehicle's
specication, and reliable and fast data transfer across various
data bus systems are all vital components of a stable and ecient
onboard power supply system.

The rst part of this self study programme summarises the

onboard power supply of the Audi A313 and provides information
on the functions, installation locations and specic features of
numerous control units.
The design and function of the various headlight and tail light
versions are described in "Exterior lighting".
This is a quick and direct way to obtain an in-depth knowledge of
the electrical and electronic equipment in the Audi A313.

Battery
In the Audi A313, the vehicle battery is housed in the engine bay
and protected by a battery box. Battery size and type are dependent on engine version, trim and country specication. Standard
batteries, EFB batteries and AGM batteries are used.

Vehicles with petrol engines and a start-stop system are equipped

with an EFB battery, while vehicles with diesel engines and a
start-stop system are equipped with an AGM battery.
Vehicles with an auxiliary heater generally have an AGM battery.

EFB

AGM battery

An EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) can be regarded as a heavyduty wet-cell battery. The positive plate inside the battery is coated
with an additional polyester scrim. This provides additional hold
for the active battery material. The deep-cycle resistance is higher
than that of conventional batteries. An EFB is charged in exactly
the same way as a conventional battery.

In AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries, the battery electrolyte is

held within a microporous glass matting. In addition to having
higher deep-cycle resistance than an EFB battery, the AGM battery
is noted for its leak-proof construction. When charging an AGM
battery, it is important to follow the charger's operating instructions and, where applicable, to program the charger for AGM
batteries.

The following batteries are used in the AudiA313:

The networking diagram on pages 8/9 provides a schematic overview of the communication paths of in-vehicle control units.
The equipment level dictates which control units are installed in
the vehicle. Here are just a few examples:
The headlight range control unit J431 is never tted at the
same time as the cornering light and headlight range control
unit J745.
The Headlight Assist control unit J844 is never tted at the
same time as the front camera for driver assistance systems

The seat occupancy recognition control unit J706 is only available in the North American market
The TV tuner is only available in certain markets

Optical data bus system MOST150

History
For the rst time in an Audi vehicle, an optical data bus system
known as the MOST bus (MOST25 to be precise) is tted in the
Audi A803.
This data bus system is named after the "Media Oriented Systems
Transport (MOST) Cooperation". This group is made up of various
automobile manufacturers, their components suppliers and
software companies, who joined forces to create a standardised
high-speed data transfer system.

The term "Media Oriented Systems Transport" denotes a network

with media-oriented data transport. This means that, unlike in the
CAN data bus, address-oriented messages are sent to a specic
recipient.
This technology is used in Audi vehicles to transfer data within the
infotainment system. The data transfer rate on the MOST25 bus is
approx.25Mbit/s.

MOST150
The MOST150 is used in the Audi A313 for the rst time in an
Audi vehicle.
This developmental stage in MOST technology is six times faster
than the MOST25 bus. The development process necessitated
various modications to MOST components.

For instance, the transmitter and receiver units Fiber Optical

Transmitters (FOT) had to be adapted.
Other components, such as the optical connectors, the bre optics
and the electrical connections of the control units, are identical to
those of the MOST25.

J525

System manager
Up to three control units are integrated in the MOST bus in the
Audi A313:
Information electronics control unit 1 J794
Digital sound package control unit J525

In the AudiA313 the information electronics control unit 1 J794
acts not only as the system manager for the MOST bus but also as
the diagnostic manager - a function previously performed by the
data bus diagnostic interface J533.

Diagnostics
The ring break diagnosis procedure is identical to that of the
previous MOST bus system. However, the inspection plan for the
AudiA313 must be retrieved in the vehicle diagnostic tester using
address word 5F.
Even though the ring break diagnosis procedure remains
unchanged, a modied tool the optical replacement control unit
VAS6778 must be used in the event of an optical fault in the
MOST150 bus, due to the modied transmitter and receiver units
in the control units.

The four positions of the rotary switch, button operations and the
position of the instrument lighting controller are read in by the
onboard power supply control unit J519 via the LIN line. In addition, all commands for the switch lighting and the warning lamps
of the individual functions are sent to the light switch by the
onboard power supply control unit.
The redundancy line is used to determine the plausibility of the
switch positions. In the event of a short circuit or an open circuit in
the LIN line or redundancy line, the emergency light function is
activated by the onboard power supply control unit ("dipped beam
on") and a diagnostic trouble code is entered in the fault memory
of the onboard power supply control unit.
The headlight range adjuster E102 is integrated in the light switch
housing but is a separate component. Its information is transmitted to the headlight range control servomotors via a discrete line.

Both in the case of the bi-xenon headlight with adaptive light and
the bi-xenon headlight with adaptive light and intelligent light
system, the headlight can be changed over for driving on the
opposite side of the road by rotating the roller through 180.
These headlights can be completely changed over, i.e. the roller
has all the required light proles for both left and right hand drive.
This means that only one hardware version of this headlight is
needed.

The tourist light is activated in the MMI. In the CAR menu, the
setting "Lights for driving on left" or "Lights for driving on right"
can be selected under the menu option "Exterior lighting".
In models tted with a navigation system, the headlights are
changed over automatically when crossing international borders, if

Overview of light functions

The descriptions of the individual headlights specify which light
function is available for which headlight version.

Country road light

The country road light is an asymmetric light. It is activated when
a driving speed of 50 kph is exceeded. In models equipped with a
navigation system, the country road light is active unless the
system has detected a built-up area or motorway driving. With the
country road light function, the adaptive light may additionally be
active.

610_053

Motorway light
The motorway light is an asymmetrical light which illuminates the
oncoming lane slightly better than the country road light.
The motorway light is activated if the vehicle exceeds 110 kph for
an extended period, and immediately if a speed of 130 kph is
exceeded. In models equipped with a navigation system, the
motorway light is activated when the vehicle is travelling faster
than 80 kph and the navigation system recognises motorway
driving.

610_054

Main beam
The main beam is a symmetrical light. It can be activated by
operating the main beam stalk, the main beam assist function or
the intelligent light system.
610_055

35

Adaptive light
The adaptive light adapts to the curvature of the corner depending
on vehicle speed and steering angle, thereby illuminating the
corner better. This function is active in a speed range of 10 kph to
110 kph.
610_056

Town light
The town light is a symmetrical close-range light. It is activated at
speeds of between 5 kph and 50 kph in models equipped with a
navigation system if the navigation system detects a built-up area.
The adaptive light cannot swivel when the "town light" function is
active.

610_057

Cornering light
The cornering light is produced by activating the G8 bulbs on one
side in the bi-xenon headlights with adaptive light.
The following conditions must be met in order to activate the
cornering light:
sharp steering angle and driving speed of less than 70 kph or
activated turn signal and driving speed of less than 40 kph
It is activated in addition to the country road light and the town
light.

610_058

Intersection light
The light function "Intersection light" is also available for models
equipped with a navigation system.
The intersection light is produced by switching on both cornering
lights. It helps the driver to detect hazards from the side at road
intersections and is activated ahead of the intersection.

Intersection light

36

The intersection light is always lit in combination with other lights.

It is activated in conjunction with the town light while driving in
built-up areas (see diagram below) and in conjunction with the
country road light while driving on country roads.

Headlight range control

Manual headlight range control
Models with halogen headlights are equipped with a manual
headlight range control system. Here, the driver is responsible for
correct adaptation of the headlight range to the vehicle's load
condition.

The headlight range adjuster E102 is integrated in the light switch

housing, above the instrument lighting adjuster. It is supplied by
terminal 15 and terminal 31 and activates both headlight range
control servomotors via a discrete line.

Number plate lights

The number plate lights on the Audi A313 use LED technology
irrespective of tail light version. Both number plate lights are
