STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
At the end for the lesson, students will be able to use modals to give advice on everyday personal
issues in a survey.
CLASS CONTEXT:
We work in public schools located in the Atlantic Department. Our classes are large (35 45
students) who receive three or four of English classes weekly. The classrooms arent so comfortable
or spacious enough, however we have some resources such as video beam, computer, internet
access and speakers.
According to what they can do with the language we might say their English level is A1, since they
can talk and write about familiar topics with simple sentences as well as understand listening and
reading common expressions.

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVE:


At the end for the lesson, students will be able to use modals to give advice on everyday personal
issues in a survey.
Stage of lesson
Warm up

Activity 1

Activity
Talking chips.
Objective: to brainstorm vocabulary related to problems
and solutions.
Students are organized in groups of three. Every student
is given a set of cards (chips). Chips are marked W for
Word and S for Sentence. Each time a student wants to
speak s/he tosses chip into the center of the table. Once
individuals have used all their chips, they can no longer
speak. The discussion proceeds until all members have
exhausted their chips.

Objective: To listen for specific information
Pre listening: Connecting to students lives.
Students will discuss the following questions in pairs and
then they will share their conclusions with the whole
class.
Who do you usually talk to when you have a
problem?
What % of the population in Colombia go to a
psychologist?
Have you ever been to a psychologist? Why?

Time
15 mins

During listening:
Listen to the conversation three times and say True or
False (See appendix 2)

Activity 2

After listening:
Pronunciation practice.
Students will be given the transcript of the conversation
and practice pronunciation of the most difficult words with
teachers help.
Reading: I need help!
Objective: to get specific from a reading text.
Pre - reading:
The class will be divided into 2 big groups of twenty
each. Ten students are assigned role A and ten role B
Every student is given a card. As have a problem card
and Bs a solution one.
Students will find the person to match their problem or
solution card by explaining what their card is about.
(See Appendix 1)
During reading.
Fill in the chart. (See appendix 3)
Students will fill in the chart with vocabulary and
expressions related to the following categories:
Ask for advice
Give advice
Post reading:
Students gather in groups and paste all the Problems
and Solutions cards on paper.
The posters are pasted around the classroom and
students go around the classroom to read all the problem
situations were used in the exercise.

Activity 3

Grammar and vocabulary:


Objective: identify the verb rules and vocabulary related
to ask for and give advice
In pairs, students will work on the following handout.
(See appendix 4)

Activity 4
Speaking: Speaking cards
Objective:
In this enjoyable group activity, students practice giving
advice to each other. The class is divided into groups of four
and each group is given a set of cards. Students take it in
turns to pick up a card and read out the situation to the
group. Then the student asks the question on the card. The
other group members then each give a different piece of
advice using the target language (I (dont) think you
should... / You should(n't)...). The student gives the card to

whoever he/she thinks has given the best advice. Then the
next student picks up a card and the process is repeated.
The person with the most cards at the end of the game
wins. Finally, the class gives feedback on the best advice
for each situation. See appendix 5

Final Activity

Survey:
Objective: to give advice on a specific problem
Every student is given a handout (survey see Appendix
6)
They have to go around the classroom and ask their
partner for a solution to every situation described in the
survey.
When finished, they gather in groups of four and decide
what the best response to every problem is and share it
with the whole group.
