Russia

The Soviet flag


Russians believe that white stands for generosity, blue for loyalty and
red for courage.

Poland
The Polish flag
Red and white have long been associated with Poland and its coat of
arms. On the modern flag, white is said to represent the hope for
peace by all of Poland's people, while red still recalls the symbolic
reference to socialism from days gone by.

Hungary

The red stripe symbolizes strength; the white stripe represents
faithfulness and fidelity; and the green stands for hope.

Romania

The Moldovan flag

golden eagle holding an Orthodox Christian cross in its beak. The olive
branch is said to symbolize peace.

Croatia

The colors represent the three symbols of Croatian history and people the red represents the blood of Croatian martyrs; the white symbolizes
Croatia's peaceful lamb like nature; and the blue represents Croatian
devotion to God.

Lithuania

Yellow is symbolic of the country's wheat fields; green symbolic of the
forests, and red symbolizes patriotism.

Latvia

Long a part of the former Soviet Union, the modern flag is symbolic of
a revered time-honored legend. It is told that the deep red color is
representative of the blood shed by a wounded Latvian leader, and the
white represents the cloth used to wrap his wounds.

Estonia

The blue band represents the clear blue skies and the vast coastal
areas of the country; it also stands for the hope and aspirations of the
people of Estonia Black symbolizes the dark past and the suffering that
the people went through; it also refers to the traditional black jacket
worn by the peasants of the country. White is the traditional color of
peace and represents the yearning of the countrymen for unity,
solidarity, enlightenment, and noble qualities of freedom and
commitment to work.

Slovenia
Slovenian flag
Red, white and blue are traditional Pan-Slavic colors. The Slovenian
coat of arms features three gold stars, said to be symbolic of
the Duchy of Celjearms. The mountains shown in white are
representative of the Alps, and the wavy blue lines across the bottom
indicate Slovenia's valuable access to the sea.

Slovakia

The colors stand for Slavic unity and independence and can be seen in
the flags of most Slavic nations.

Bulgaria

The red and white colors of the flag were taken from the Pan
Slavic colors. The green replaced the blue of the Russian Tricolor, and
before 1990, the white stripe contained the Bulgarian coat of arms.

Ukraine
Ukrainian flag
The top strip is blue while the bottom band is yellow. The ratio between
the height and width of the Ukrainian flag is 2:3. The color blue of
the Ukraine Flag represents the colors of the sky, streams, and
mountains of Ukraine. Yellow symbolizes the lush golden wheat fields
of this country.

Belarus

The green stripe symbolizes the future. Green is the color of hope,
spring and revival and the color of Belarus' lands forests and fields. The
red represents Belarus' past and the blood of the country's defenders.
The Belarusian flag's decorative pattern symbolizes Belarus' rich
cultural heritage, its spiritual continuity, and the unity of its people.

Serbia

Serbia became a republic within the Socialist Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia and a communist star was added to the middle, was
officially dropped in 1992.

Montenegro

Montenegro's coat of arms consists of a golden, double-headed eagle
which represents the unity of church and state. Protecting the eagle is
a shield adorned with the Lion of Judah, symbolizing the Biblical theme
of resurrection.

Bosnia
Bosnian Flag
The stars represent Europe and are meant to be continuous (thus the
half stars at top and bottom); the colors (white, blue, and yellow) are
often associated with neutrality and peace, and traditionally are linked
with Bosnia.

Albania

The red stands for bravery, strength and valor, while the doubleheaded eagle represents the sovereign state of Albania located in the
Balkans.

Kosovo

The flag of Kosovo features the geographical shape of Kosovo centered


on a dark blue field in a gold color surmounted by six white, fivepointed stars arrayed in a slight arc; each star represents one of the
major ethnic groups of Kosovo: Albanians, Serbs, Turks, Gorani, Roma,
and Bosniaks

Macedonia
Macedonian Flag
The sun design is a simplified version of the Star of Virginia, which
appeared on Macedonia's former national flag. Red has been a
significant color throughout the history of Macedonian flags. The sun
also represents "the new sun of liberty", which is mentioned in the
country's national anthem.
