Magic with Science

Experiments

Experiment 1: Lemon Volcano

Items: 2 lemons, baking soda, 2-3 liquid
watercolours,
dishwashing liquid,
blade.
Description: Cut the base of lemon to make the
flat base, flip the lemon once and slice out the
core. Keep the lemon on a tray and crush it. Add
water colours, dishwashing soap and baking soda
to the crushed lemon.
Experiment 2: Rainbow (dispersion)
Items: 1 Bowl, nail polish (2 colours),black paper
, 2-3 tissues
Description: Add some drops of clear nail polish
to bowl of water. After dispersing, dip the paper
in the water quickly and dry it with tissues. Tilt
the paper in different angles to see a rainbow.
Experiment 3: fireworks
Items: Jar, oil, food colour, cup

Description: in a cup, mix oil and food colour

and then pour the mixture into a jar containing
water.
Science behind it : Food colours dissolve in water
but not in oil , oil is less dense so it floats at the
top. Coloured droplets will begin to sink because
they are heavier than oil. Once they sink in water
, they will begin dissolving in water.
Experiment 4: Combustion
Items: candle, plastic transparent cup, watch
box
Description: light the candle and cover it with a
cup, the candle stops burning after sometime
proving that oxygen required for combustion.
Experiment 5: Electric Charges
Items: Scale and paper
Description: rub the scale on your hair and then
keep it near pieces of paper. Observe that paper
gets attracted to the scale.

Experiment 5: Electric Charges

Items: Scale and paper

Description: rub the scale on your hair and then

keep it near pieces of paper. Observe that the
paper gets attracted to the scale.
Experiment 6:
Items: 2 glasses, salt, food colour, cardboard
Description: Fill 2 glasses with water. Add salt to
one glass and food colour to the other. Place the
cardboard on the glass containing salt and then
keep the cup with coloured water on the
cardboard. Then slowly move the cardboard.
Observation: the 2 liquids remain separated after
removing the cardboard.
Experiment 7: Absorption
Items: tissues, 10 plastic cups , 5 food colours.
Description: Fill all the cups with water and add
food colours to alternate cups. Dip folded tissues
between adjacent cups. After some time well
observe that the tissue gets coloured.
Experiment 8: Candle that sucks water
Items: candle, bowl, glass
Description: place the candle in the bowl and fill
the bowl with water and light the candle. Place
the glass over the candle. When the flame goes

out, water in the bowl gets sucked into the glass

because when candle burns air expands due to
heat, some of the air escapes the glass. Candle
goes out after using all the oxygen, then the air
cools. Hence the pressure drops inside the glass
and hence water moves in.

Experiment 9: Friction
Items: Balloon, empty aluminium can (juice
can) , tissue
Description: Place empty can on the floor. Blow
a balloon and tie a knot, rub the tissue on the
balloon and put the balloon near the can, the can
starts rolling towards the balloon.
Experiment 10: Making an egg float in salt
water.
Items: Eggs, water, salt, tall drinking glass
Description: Egg sinks in normal water. Put 6
spoons of salt in half cup water and stir it. When
the salt has dissolved, fill the whole glass with
water. Gently put an egg in the water. ( it floats
since density of salt water is higher than normal
water.)
