Overview

Mathematics-Fractions

Students will participate in a mathematics lesson with a specific focus on Mixed Fractions. Students have previously participated in a
short introductory lesson prior to this lesson. After an IWB revision and warm up students will play a Roll, Say, Keep mixed
fractions game with their desk partners. Students will then complete a Mixed Numerals activity entitled; Cookies Galore from the
Mathletics student booklet.

Body of Learning experience and procedures:

Roll, Say, Keep-Mixed Fraction Game
Explain that we are now going to practice our Mixed fractions
knowledge in small groups. Reminders of working in a team and
helping others. Way we speak to each other. Appropriate game
behavior and noise levels. Game consists of students rolling a dice,
choosing a card, if the can correctly Say the mixed fraction represented
on the card they get to keep it. If they incorrectly identify the mixed
fraction the group determines the correct answer card is returned to the
pile.
Types of Fractions-Mixed Numerals Activity.
Real World Example of Mixed Fractions
After game, introduction of activity that entails students divinding up
cookies into even pieces and then representing the mixed fraction.
Reminder that cutting and pasting needs to happen quickly and
efficiently. Make connections to similar real world problems as discussed
in the activity.

Consolidation and Extension.

Task have been set with particular reference to consolidation of

concept and extension activities.

Personal Reflections:
Use a framework for Critical Reflection e.g. The Productive Pedagogies; school specific pedagogical framework; Blooms Cognitive Taxonomy; Habits of Mind; What?/So What?/Now What?;

At completion of lesion my mentor and I discussed the importance of after using my ZIP ZIP ZIP ZAP ZAP ZAP call and response, of waiting for all children to Stop, Look and
Listen rather than just the majority as some children missed cues and instructions.

Personally I feel the lesson went very well, the students were engaged and the success they were able to achieve during the hands on activity allowed them to gain a greater
understanding of the concept. The cookie cutting activity whilst worksheet based, gave real world examples of the use of fractions and incidental discussion amongst the students included
other examples that the students had experienced where Fractions and Mixed fractions were used. At the party mum said I could only have half a cup of lemonade

Some of the Mathletics consolidation tasks were too difficult for my adjusted students and as such extra time was spent with them directly working through these tasks. The importance
of adjusting these tasks before the lesson was reinforced.

This was the first time I had used the setup of desk partners turning around to make a group of four. It worked well and gave the students a break from their usual desk grouping.
The students enjoyed the small change and I will utilise this way of grouping for future learning experiences.
