Learning Objectives
Content Area Objectives: Students will be able to name the five major world religions:
Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Students will be able to define the following vocabulary terms: religion, monotheism, polytheism,
atheism, and deity.
Students will begin to recognize the symbols of the five major world religions and their
significance to their respective religions.
Technology Objectives: Students will utilize the website http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/
to learn more about the five major world religions.
Students will be introduced to and interact with the presentation platform in the form of
Mentimeter at https://www.menti.com/. The students will use their personal devices (phones,
tablets, computers, etc.) to interact with Mentimeter, and their responses will help dictate the
course that the class takes for the rest of the unit.
Methods of Assessment

Students will be assessed based on their level of participation in the various activities during the
class. If the students ask questions when they are confused and/or need clarification, and present
responses when prompted, they will get full credit.
Introduce the Learning Activity
I will greet the class and ask everyone to name something good that happened to them over the
weekend.
I will then ask students to get out their devices (phones, tablets, computers, etc.) to go to the
website https://www.menti.com/. I will provide the students with the code (85 98 1) to access the
first question that I have prepared for the class.
Which religion(s) do you know about already?
After the students have submitted their responses, I will save their responses and use them later
on in the class period.
Provide Information
1. I will present the five vocabulary terms to the class by writing them on the board (religion,
monotheism, polytheism, atheism, and deity). The students can work in pairs to come up with
their own definitions of the vocabulary terms. I will walk around the classroom as the students
are working, and after a few minutes I will ask each pair to give their response for one of the
terms. I will correct the students (if necessary) by providing them with the definitions from the
Merriam-Webster dictionary.
Religion: the belief in a god or in a group of gods; an organized system of beliefs,
ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods; an interest, a belief, or an
activity that is very important to a person or group
Monotheism: the doctrine or belief that there is but one God
Polytheism: belief in or worship of more than one god
Atheism: a disbelief in the existence of deity; the doctrine that there is no deity
Deity: one exalted or revered as supremely good or powerful, like a god or goddess

Provide Practice
2. Once the students have access to the vocabulary, I will tell the students to go to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/, and have them spend some time looking through the
information that is provided about the five major religions. While they look through the website,
students will write down at least one new fact that they learned about each religion (total: 5 (five)
minimum). After each student has found their new facts, I will ask them to share at least one of

the new facts that they learned (the number of facts that I will ask them to share will vary,
depending on class size and how much time is left in the class).

Final/End of Class Activity

After the students have done some of their own investigating into the five major religions, I will
have the students return to their devices for the second question presented on Mentimeter,
Which religion(s) would you like to learn more about? and then ask the students why they
chose these religions.
Provide Knowledge of Results
As the unit progresses, students will fill out a graphic organizer with information that they should
know about the five major world religions. At the end of each day where a specific religion is
covered, I will make sure that the students have all of the parts of the graphic organizer
pertaining to that religion filled in correctly.
