INPUT (Teach the information. Demonstrate/model the activity, skill or strategy.)
I will review the anchor chart. I will also give the definitions of common prefixes and suffixes
that are suggested for the 2nd grade. I will use my preprinted prefix and suffix cards and root
word card to create 5 words and practice decoding skills to come up with a definition.
CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING & ENGAGEMENT
Review the definitions of the prefixes and suffixes by asking at certain intervals as well as
having them grouped visually on the word wall.
The students will write sentences using the 5 words that were constructed and defined in the
whole group lesson. They will also get more practice with prefixes, suffixes, root words and
their definition during Readers and Writers Workshop where they will rotate through the

Today, we learned how to add letters to the beginning of the word and the end of the word to
make new words that have new meaning. We now know these are called prefixes and suffixes
and we also know what some of them mean. We also practices using them in a sentence
recognizing them in a story. You have built your vocabulary today and are well on your way to
being an awesome reader and writer.
As a quick exit assessment, the students will be asked to write one prefix and one suffix on a
post it along with the definition and stick it to the post it station on their way out the door to be
dismissed for the day.
