Leading with love

HMHS students spread messages
of hope, tolerance with chalk drawings
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Last week, messages of positivity and love greeted students returning from fall break at Haddonfield Memorial
High School. The walkway in front of the school was covered in chalk, encouraging students to spread love not
hate and lead with love.
About 25 students arrived before the school day began on
Monday, Nov. 14, and wrote the messages in hopes of letting
students know they are in a positive, loving and supportive
community.

Messages of love and positivity were scribed in chalk in front

of Haddonfield Memorial High School. A group of students
created the temporary artwork after seeing how some people
were negatively impacted by the presidential election.

Now starting its sixth season, the

Branch Managers meet regularly
to improve Haddonfields treelined streets by pruning small
shade trees, removing excess
mulch and ivy and trimming
girdling roots. They document the
status of borough trees and communicate with Public Works
about trees requiring additional
attention. All work is done at
street level and fully supervised.
In addition to volunteers who
want to participate in pruning,
the Branch Managers need educators for their outreach programs
on Earth Day, at the Haddonfield
Farmers Market and other events,
and organizers for the regular
work days and other activities.
To pre-register for the Tree
Pruning Short Course or for more
information on the Branch Managers or the training program,

Camden County celebrated

National Adoption Day
By Surrogate Michelle Gentek-Mayer
For thirteen years,
the Freeholder Board
and the Surrogates
Court have been connecting appreciative
children with loving
families as part of
National Adoption
Day. When Camden
County marked National Adoption Day
on November 18 this
year, 26 children had their adoptions
finalized.
The Surrogates Court and the Freeholder Board mark the yearly occasion by hosting a full day of adoption
support and awareness activities.
The day began with a luncheon we
hosted for the children and their new
families before heading to the courtroom for the formal legal proceedings.
The day brought together adoptive parents, the Surrogates Court
staff, adoption professionals, judges
and attorneys to celebrate and honor
the families who are finalizing their
adoptions. I congratulate the entire
staff of the Surrogates Court for the
important work they do in matching
a child with loving parents inside a
stable home. This is done not just on
National Adoption Day but throughout the year as they help adoptive
parents welcome new additions to
their families.
Camden is consistently among the
counties in New Jersey that finalize
the highest number of adoptions per
year. These adoptions represent the
full spectrum of cases facilitated by
the Surrogates Court throughout the
year, including domestic and international adoptions as well as adoptions
facilitated through private agencies
and the New Jersey State Department
of Children and Families.
The Camden County Surrogates
Court also finalizes the largest
number of international, or Hague
Adoption Convention, cases in the
state each year. The Hague Adop-

tion Convention established international

standards of practices
for inter-country adoptions that have been
followed in the United
States since 2008.
Recent figures indicate that over 2% of
all U.S. children are
adopted and that about
60% of Americans
know someone who has been adopted or has adopted. Informational
expos and programs such as those
hosted by the Camden County Surrogates Court are instrumental in
placing children in a stable home.
Adoption Day is a national initiative to raise awareness of the more
than 100,000 children in foster care
waiting to find permanent, loving
families. On this day every year we
celebrate these beautiful children getting their forever family and work to
ensure we can continue getting kids
out of the foster care system and into
a permanent place to live with loving
parents. This annual event has made
the dreams of thousands of children
across our country come true by finalizing the creation of adoptive
families and moving children from
foster care to their new homes.
I always consider it a distinct honor
to participate in National Adoption
Day and experience so many smiling
faces firsthand.
The Surrogates Court acts as the
Deputy Clerk of the Superior Court,
Family Part for adoptions. For more
information on adopting in Camden
County, please contact the Camden
County Surrogates Court by phone
at (856) 225-7282, or by email at
caustin@camdencounty.com. Also,

Shop and save money on taxes

Residents will soon receive Shop Haddonfield cards
for property tax discounts when shopping at local stores
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Soon, a shopping trip at a Haddonfield business could earn you
money toward your property
taxes.
In an effort to bolster the local
economy and provide property
tax relief, the Partnership for
Haddonfield and the borough announced the Shop Haddonfield
Property Tax Reward Program.
The program will provide a discount on property taxes as an incentive to shop locally at participating businesses. Haddonfield
residents will be able to swipe a
card at participating local businesses, which will generate rebates that can be applied to their
property taxes.
Not only will residents of
Haddonfield be encouraged to
give their business to local merchants, but they will also be rewarded for doing so by receiving
these property tax rebates with
every purchase at a participating
business, Mayor Jeff Kasko said.

This is a win-win for every resident and business in our community.

Were hoping to drive more
business downtown, especially
during the holiday season. This is
mutually beneficial for the residents, getting a break on their
taxes, as well as the merchants,
Remi Fortunato, retail recruiter
for the Partnership for Haddonfield, said.
The Partnership for Haddonfield will mail Shop Haddonfield property reward cards,
sponsored by Republic Bank, to
all residents. Fortunato said she
hopes the cards will be in the mail
for the first week of December,
just in time for the holiday shopping season.
It is a program were very excited to get started, Fortunato
said. We want to get (the cards)
out there to take advantage of the
holiday season.
After registering the card,
when shopping at a participating
local business, together with the
normal payment for goods and

services, the cardholder can

swipe the card through a dedicated processing machine that Fin
Credit, Inc. the managing company for the Property Tax Reward
Program will provide to each
participating merchant. So far,
Forunato said there are 15 to 20
stores signed up. Once the program launches, a list of all participating stores will be available online at www.propertytaxcard.com
/shophaddonfield.
The swiped card will result in a
rebate, which will be credited to
the shoppers Property Tax Reward Program account. Each individual business determines its
own rebate amount.
For example, someone spending $100 at a business that accepts
the card would get $10 toward
their property taxes if the business sets its rate at 10 percent,
Fortunato said. Rebates will then
be applied to the customers property tax bill. Savings can be
tracked online as well.

in our opinion

Give thanks ... and give help

There are people throughout New Jersey who could use your help
omorrow officially kicks off
the holiday season. Thanksgiving is here, and with it come
family, friends, food and football.
In elementary schools across the
country this week, children will be
taught the history of Thanksgiving.
Some will celebrate it by making pilgrim and Indian hats out of paper and
by having a feast of their own. Theyll
be asked what they are thankful for
and share it with the class.
At most of our homes on Thursday,
well be sitting around a TV or at a
dinner table or keeping a close eye on
the oven so we dont burn the turkey.
Well be welcoming relatives, near and
far, to gather for a day where we can
also give thanks for all we have.
Quickly, as if in a blink of an eye,
that theme will shift to the two most

famous winter holidays Christmas

and Hanukkah and, with it, holiday
shopping.
But before you turn the page in your
mind to buying presents and decorating your house with lights, take an
extra minute this year to remember
what youre thankful for, and help
those who might not be as lucky as
you. You might not see it in your community, but there are a lot of people in
New Jersey who need help. Legal Services of New Jersey, a group based in
Edison, recently released a report that

suggests 2.8 million people in the Garden State are living in poverty. A family of four living in this state would
have to earn $60,000 per year to be considered above the groups poverty line.
Thats because, according to its President Melville Miller, the group defines
poverty as being significantly deprived of any one particular need
after considering costs for everything
from food, clothing, health care, housing and transportation.
Its expensive to live in our state
we know that. And people are in need
throughout our state, not just in its
urban centers.
So be thankful for what you have,
and help those who arent in the same
position as you are. Do more for others
this holiday season. Itll be the best gift
you can give.

letter to the editor

Focus on volunteerism
this holiday season and beyond
The election is yesterday's news.
Protests go on. Tomorrow will bring all
kinds of pros and cons on President-Elect
Trump's choices and actions.
For this moment, I'd like to focus readers
on what really makes the country tick
volunteerism during the holiday season
and all year, and numerous organizations
and people who participate.
Take the Haddonfield Lions Club one of
many such organizations in our South Jer-

sey community devoted to good deeds for

fellow citizens.
I am a member, so I have a first hand
view of the variety of good the club does.
Whether it be contributing to help the
blind, eye screening for hundreds of very
young children, supporting food bank programs, providing scholarships for worthy
high school grads to help fund their college
educations, providing money and personal
efforts to fuel various causes in our community, the club's members represent the
heart and soul of giving to our fellow citizens.
In the past five years, the club has con-

tributed more than $150,000 to many causes.

So, congratulations to fellow volunteers
at the Haddonfield club, and numerous
other such organizations. If you are interested in joining the Haddonfield Lions
Club, for further information go to our
website www.HaddonfieldLions.org or contact club president Bob Stokes at (856) 7614117, so you can enjoy giving back to the
community.
As my beloved mother-in-law, Marion
Hosmer, used to say, "we are doing God's
work."

HMHS girls cross country shakes off

Bulldawgs win NJSIAA Group II state championship meet on Nov. 12
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Haddonfield Memorial High
School girls cross country senior
runner Briana Gess won her
third NJSIAA Group II state
championship race in four years
on Nov. 12, winning the race by 11
seconds with a time of 18:43.
Despite the accomplishment,
winning the race individually

Gess watched as fellow Haddonfield seniors Lauren Lynch

Izzy Miller all crossed the finish

line in the top-35 of the 145-runner field. Junior Lily Minors
50th-place finish minutes later officially gave Haddonfield girls
cross-country its first state championship since 2008.
The Bulldawgs won the NJSIAA Group II team state championship with 108 points, defeating
second place Voorhees High
School by 17 points.
Gess said winning a team
championship means a lot more
to her than an individual title.
It doesnt even compare, she
said.

Senior Meg Schroeter described the state championship

meet as a surreal experience.
We started crying, Schroeter
said. We didnt even mean to
start crying. We were just so
happy.
The championship meant a lot

Girls cross country team wins championship

GIRLS
Continued from page 7

tender to win. Each of those

years, they came up short with a
second-place finish in 2013 and
third-place finishes in 2014 and
2015.
It was really frustrating because we were in a position to
win each year, Gess said.
I feel like something just went
wrong every year.
This year, the senior runners
had one goal: win a state championship.
Weve been trying for so long
and wed been so close, senior
Meg Schroeter said.
This year, the Bulldawgs
changed a couple things. In the
past couple years, injuries had
helped derail Haddonfields state
championship hopes. A change in
the training schedule this year
helped keep all of the Bulldawg
runners remain healthy.

Weve taken off every 10

days, Schroeter said. Thats
kind of helped with injuries.
Haddonfield also got a boost
the weekend before the state
championship meet in the South
Jersey Group II sectional race. In
the past, the Bulldawgs had won
the sectional race by a large margin. This year, Haddonfield just
barely won its sectional, edging
Point Pleasant Boro High School
by just seven points. Having a
competitive sectional race provided extra motivation for the Bulldawgs heading into states.
That helped us get ready for
states, because in the past, wed
go in and we dont have a lot of
competition we know we have to
beat, Schroeter said.
In the state championship, a
number of Haddonfield runners
had some of the best times of
their careers. Lynch had her best
finish in a state championship, as
she crossed the finish line in 18th
place with a time of 20:31. After
struggling in states the past two

seasons, Gostovich also had a

solid time of 20:54, finishing in
33rd place.
I think we were less nervous
on the line, Lynch said. We
were experienced, and some of
the other teams werent.
Gostovich said the team mentality was a big part of Haddonfields success in the race.
We definitely feed off of one
another, Gostovich said. If
someone does well in a race, its
inspiring.
The senior class was happy to
win another title for Haddonfields prestigious cross country
program. The title is the ninth
state championship for Haddonfield girls cross country. Only
three other schools in New Jersey
have more girls cross country
state championships.
They set such a precedent of
winning and accomplishments,
Gess said of past Haddonfield
teams. We were able to set a state
championship, which is as high
as you can go.

Haddonfield public schools receive PARCC scores

Overview reveals mostly improvements, increased participation
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The
Haddonfield
Public
Schools Board of Education received an overview of the districts Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College
and Careers scores, showing
mostly areas of improvements
and a small number of areas in
need of extra work compared to
last year.
We had a much easier time
testing. The kids were used to it
and the teachers were familiar
with
the
procedure,
so
overall I feel we had smoother administration of the test, Supervisor of Curriculum Craig Ogelby said.
In the 2014-2015 academic year,
New Jersey adopted the PARCC
to replace the HSPA and previous
assessments in the elementary
and middle schools, based on the
Common Core standards. The
PARCC tests, taken online, were
split into English/language arts
and math sections and taken by
students in third to 11th grade.
The assessment system was to determine whether students were
on track for college or career
readiness.
Haddonfield saw a significant
increase in participation from
students in the 2015-2016 year,
compared to the previous school
year. In 2014-2015, 25 percent of eligible students did not take
PARCC. The percentage of students who did not take the test in
2015-2016 went down to 9 percent.

Ogelby said this was a wonderful

improvement, however the state
asks each school ensure PARCC is
taken by 95 percent of the students to achieve Adequate Yearly
Progress.
This is a state requirement
we didnt make the 95 percent, so I
will be back to talk with you in
January for another action plan
to get us to that 95 percent, Ogelby said.
PARCC used five performance
levels that delineated the knowledge, skills and practices students
are able to demonstrate. The levels were 1: did not meet expectations, 2: partially met expectations, 3: approaching expectations, 4: met expectations, and 5:
exceeded expectations. District
scores were broken down by
grade level and percentage of students receiving each level.
In English/language arts, the
students who met or exceeded expectations, receiving a 4 or 5, saw
an increase in all grades except
sixth.
For math, third, fifth, sixth and
eighth grade saw increases, while
fourth and seventh grade saw
some regression. For Algebra I,
students who met or exceeded expectations had a dramatic improvement from 32 percent to 78
percent. However, Algebra II saw
a big regression from 32 percent
to 9 percent. Geometry saw an increase in scores as well.
The course configurations
have changed at the middle
school (in Algebra classes) this
year, we increased the number of
students testing and dramatically

Boy Scouts collecting donations

Boy Scout Troop 65 is collecting
new and clean, used blankets,
comforters, sleeping bags, baby
blankets and throws this holiday
season for those less fortunate in
the area.
Blankets may be dropped off at
the 306 E. Park Ave. or the Haddonfield Information Center in Kings
Court. The Information Center is

open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and

Thursdays 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The blankets will be collected
until Dec. 15. If you have questions or would like to have your
donations picked up, please call

holiday season!

improved (in Algebra I). For that

same reason, Algebra II students
(were affected) because we are
in the middle of this transition,
we didnt do well in Algebra II for
that reason, Ogelby said.
The outcomes of the PARCC assessment saw the district greatly
exceed state percentages that met
or were greater than level 4 in
English/language arts and math
in all categories
For the most part, weve made
good progress, Ogelby said.
According to Ogelby, the district received detailed reports for
students and by school. It was
able to look at questions and standards and see where children did
well and areas in need of improvement.
Weve never had that specificity as far as information goes before. For that reason, it is a valu-

able test, Ogelby said.

The presentation is available at
the districts website, www.haddonfield.k12.nj.us.
In other news:
The board approved the 20172018 academic calendars, 7-1.
Board member Matthew Ritter
opposed and Heather Paoli was
absent from the meeting. School
will start a week later next year to
accommodate for construction
from the bond referendum projects. According to the 2017-2018
draft calendar, school will be
closed to students until Sept. 11.
School normally opens the day
after Labor Day. Major changes
include the reduction of fall
break from a week to two days
and spring break from a week to
three days. There are no days off
in October. The Thanksgiving
break and winter break will not

change. School will also be closed

on Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day and Memorial Day. Superintendent Richard Perry said
the calendars would be available
online and sent to parents via
email or newsletter so they have
plenty of time to make arrangements.
The October board meeting
saw a heated discussion on fifthgrade field trips, in particular the
safety trip to Sesame Place versus
the entire fifth-grade trip. According to Perry, after reconvening
with the elementary school principals and getting input from
other people throughout the district, it was decided to move
ahead with the Camp Ockanickon
trip, to include all fifth graders,
and the safeties will still have a
reward activity, with pizza and
bowling.

A lot of people are angry and

scared about (Donald) Trump
being our president, but anger
and negativity wont do anything, junior Chloe Fontaine
said. Trying to spread positivity
and love and make people feel
safe will do more good.
Fontaine was spurred to action
after seeing similar positive chalk
writing on the library steps while
visiting her sister at Yale University.
Instead of focusing on negativity toward Trump, they were
focusing on positivity and spreading love, strength and power. It is
a scary time for a lot of different
people, and I think a lot of people
dont feel like they have people
they can go to or people that support them, Fontaine said. I
think by making (the chalk messages) all positive, a lot of people

realized other people were feeling

similarly, or even if not feeling
the same way, that people understood and were there for them.
That is why we did this to
spread something positive.
At the end of fall break,
Fontaine texted five of her
friends about her idea, and the interest among her classmates grew
so quickly that a Facebook group
was created with more than 70
members. Although not all participated, even having more than
originally planned was a pleasant
surprise, Fontaine said.
I was nervous and worried
people didnt feel the same way.
When I saw so many people did
feel the same, it made me feel better. I think that made people feel
comfortable, Fontaine said.
It was good to see a group of
people who all felt the same way
as us so we could support each
other, fellow junior and chalk
writer Sophie Pancoast said.
The students met at 6:20 a.m.
and started writing messages
along the sidewalk, from the entrance of the school down to the
road. There were messages talking about love, hope, equality and
strength.
For the most part, students and
members of the community who
saw the chalk writing appreciated
its message, Fontaine said. There
were students who stopped to
take pictures or point out particular messages to friends.
Some messages particularly
love trumps hate and build
kindness not walls were
washed away with water at days
end. A few students fixed the
love trumps hate message.

BRIGIT BAUMA/The Sun

Top, Haddonfield Memorial High

School juniors Sophie Pancoast,
Chloe Fontaine and Taylor Bee
stand with the chalk writing to
promote positivity, love and support after the elections. Above,
one of the messages.
The message we were trying
to spread was positivity, love and
strength. Some people are taking
it as anti-Trump, as a negative
protest, Fontaine said. The
main message we were going for
was to make people feel like they
were safe and that other people
were feeling the same way.
Fontaine, fellow junior Taylor
Bee and Pancoast hope their message came across. Though they
couldnt vote on Nov. 8, they felt
doing something positive over the
negativity seen around the nation
was something they could do to
help.
The election is over, but the
presidency hasnt even started
and there are hate crimes happening all over the place, Bee said.
We cant even vote yet, Pancoast added, but doing this within our community shows we all
have voices and that we can do
something.
