selling land near
Kinderberg Park

Veterans Day In Germantown

The Germantown School Board

approved taking a step Nov. 14 toward
selling property the district owns near
Kinderberg Park.
The board approved directing the
Strang and Pattterson legal services firm
to review agreements between the village
of Germantown and the school district
over property near Kinderberg Park just
north of Donges Bay Road. The review
will determine if any restrictions or
covenants on the use of the property are
in place.
The property currently owned by the
district is 15.388 acres, which was
obtained as part of a land swap with the
village in 1995 in which the district gave
the village land for Spassland Park. The
district property near Kinderberg Park is
appraised at $690,000. The board also
approved language listing a timeline for
the potential sale of the land.
The district property near Kinderberg
Park had at one time been considered as

Christmas Silver Tea & Christmas Cookie sale Dec. 4

The Miller-Davidson House at Old
Falls Village will be open on Sunday,
December 4 from 1:00 4:00 p.m. for
the annual Silver Tea featuring a festive Winter Wonderland theme of past
winter days in Menomonee Falls. A
Christmas Cookie Bake Sale will be
held in the Public House and Mr. and
Mrs. Santa will visit and read stories to
the children. The Menomonee Falls
Historical Society will offer free
admission, parking and refreshments
for this event. Old Falls Village is
located at the corner of Hwy. Q and
Pilgrim Road in Menomonee Falls. See
www.oldfallsvillage.com for more
information

Tour this lovely, restored home

which was once the summer home of
Emma Davidson of Harley-Davidson.
Ladies, gentlemen and children will
enjoy tea, coffee and homemade
Christmas cookies as they savor the
sights and smells of days gone by. The
home will be decorated by members of
the historical society and supported
by Bank of Memories & Flowers and
Shady Lane Greenhouse.
The Miller-Davidson house anchors
the 22 acre historical park at Old Falls
Village. Built in 1858 in the Greek
Revival style popular at the time, the
house is built of locally quarried limestone with mortar lime coming from

the lime kilns. The Miller-Davidson

House, original to the site, is special
in many ways beginning with an
unusual arched foundation. In 1935 it
was selected by the Federal
Government's Historic American
Building Survey. And in 1973 the
National Register of Historic Places
listed this beautiful early American
farm home among those to be preserved for future generations. The
house has not been restored to its
original state but is presented as a
house improved as lifestyles improved.
It now houses an eclectic decorative
arts collection.

Falls Patio Players will hold open

auditions for "Enchanted April" on
December 5th and 6th, 2016. They are
looking for 5 women and 3 men of varied ages to join us in this heart-felt
comedy. Performance dates are weekends February 3rd-5th, and 10th-12th,
2017. Auditions will be held at North
Middle School Auditorium, N88
W16750 Garfield Dr. Menomonee Falls.
Doors open at 6:30 pm; auditions will
begin at 7:00 p.m. Visit www.fallspatioplayers.com or contact the director,

While the Germantown School

District performed well on the state
Report cards issued by the Department
of Public Instruction (DPI) last week,
district officials made it clear they did
not agree with the emphasis on state
and national standards and assessments which was the basis for data in
the report cards.
The district received the highest
overall mark on the report cards for
2015-16 school year that were publicly
announced by the state DPI Nov. 17.
According to a statement from the
DPI, the report cards "provide a snapshot of school and district performance." The agency added that the
report cards "are not comparable to
report cards issued in prior years and
do not represent a full picture of the
important work taking place in schools
throughout the state. Local schools and
districts will have additional information about student opportunities and
performance."
The districts and specific schools
are judged on a five-rating scale, with
the Significantly Exceeds Expectations
ranking given for an 83 to 100 score,
Exceeds Expectations given for a 73 to
82.9 score, Meets Expectations given
for a 63 to 72.9 score, Meets Few
Expectations given for a 53 to 62.9
score and Fails to Meet Few
Expectations given for a 0 to 52.9
score.

President Robert Soderberg said
through the district facilities master
plan that was developed, it was determined the district no longer needed the
property near Kinderberg Park property.

arbitrary and capricious measures that

come with that. We contend that the
manner in which our curriculum is conveyed and learned is more important
than nationalized standards and state
assessment scores and that our State
scores will fluctuate over time just like
other districts," Holmes stated. "DPI
data and local research suggests that,
while incremental statistical improvement and regression can be noted both
locally and statewide, meaningful
and/or clinical improvement in student
learning is the ultimate aim and is not
occurring on a statewide basis; e.g.,
achievement gaps."
The Germantown School Board
rejected the state Common Core School
Standards in December 2014 and has
spent the past two years developing its
own approach.
"Our approach is to create opportunity for deeper, broader, and longerlasting learning of our curriculum for
all of our students without becoming a
test-prep factory in the process. Our
goal is to better prepare students for
life-success beyond their years in our
system; we do not believe in the onesize-fits-all methodology in order to
promote this," Holmes stated.
"Coincidentally, this years school
report card results, as gauged by the
state, allow us to recognize and celebrate our Districts efforts among and
with the students, parents, staff, community, and Board of Education as we
look to continually improve upon the
educational services we provide."

overall score of 83.7, which falls within

the
"Significantly
Exceeds
Expectations" category. In the four priority areas in which districts are
judged, Germantown scored an 83.4 on
student achievement, 98.2 on student
growth, 66.3 on closing gaps and 94.9
for on-track and post-secondary readiness.
"This is wonderful news and reaffirms that we have the right tools in
place that create opportunities for a
high level of learning to occur, without
our focus being on Common Core
Standards and the assessments derived
from those," School Board President
Robert Soderberg said in a statement
provided by the district.
Among specific district schools,
Kennedy Middle School and MacArthur
Elementary scored in the Significantly
Exceeds Expectations category with
scores of 84.8 and 91.0. The district's
two other elementary schools scored in
the Exceeds Expectations range, with
Amy Belle Elementary scoring at 77.4
and Rockfield Elementary scoring at
75.9. Germantown High School scored
at 72.8, in the Meets Expectations
range.
Superintendent Jeff Holmes indicated that how a local school district
curriculum is presented is "more important" than national standards and state
test scores.
"Germantown School Districts
improved scores are most likely the
result of the natural variations associated with standardized testing and the

Public use of high school track

The Building Committee is reviewing
a proposal to allow public use of the
high school track during non-school

Nov. 14 Building Committee meeting.
"There's consensus on the board
that we will be doing this. We just want
to make sure we do it the right way,"
Soderberg said later.

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born
during the third century in the village of Patara. At the time the
area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His
wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in
an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to
"sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used
his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of
Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known
throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his
love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.
Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted
Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and

imprisoned. The prisons were so full of bishops, priests, and deacons, there was no room for the real criminalsmurderers, thieves
and robbers. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of
Nicaea in AD 325. He died December 6, AD 343 in Myra and was
buried in his cathedral church, where a unique relic, called manna,
formed in his grave. This liquid substance, said to have healing
powers, fostered the growth of devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration, St. Nicholas Day,
December 6th (December 19 on the Julian Calendar).
Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of
St. Nicholas' life and deeds. These accounts help us understand his
extraordinary character and why he is so beloved and revered as
protector and helper of those in need.

County committee wary of holding board meetings at Old Courthouse

The Washington County Board
Executive Committee offered a lukewarm response to a suggestion to hold
County Board meetings at the Old
Courthouse.
"I don't think any of us want you to
waste your time on that," County
Supervisor Mark McCune told County
Administrator Joshua Schoemann during the Nov. 15 Executive Committee
meeting.
County Board Superivisor Mike
Bassill said he would support holding
meetings at the Old Courthouse since it
is within his district.
Schoemann said that after county
officials went through the budget
process in October, there were conversations about finding ways to utilize
the Old Courthose. On Nov. 11,
Schoemann met with an individual
about addressing acoustics in the
courtroom and how furniture could be
moved in an out of the room so it could
still be used by History Center, which is

located at the Old Courthouse.

Schoemann noted the county
spends $300,000 annually to maintain
the building.
"I continue to believe it's a good
idea for us to at least take a look before
we do all the upgrades to the basement
County Board room (at the current
Government Center)," Schoemann said.
Supervisor Tim Michalak said the
courtroom at the Old Courthouse is "an
echo chamber" and he would be concerned about the cost of addressing
sound issues.
"From a historic perspective I think
it's a beautiful building," MIchalak
said. He added that it would be "nice to
get some use out of it."
He said he would only support moving County Board meetings to Old
Courthouse if there would be more
room for people to view the board
meetings than at the current board
room.
Supervisor Don Kriefall said if there

was a lot of public attendance at the

Old Courthouse, there isn't enough
parking in the area.
Former County Board Chairman Herb
Tennies said the board once held a
meeting at the Courthouse room, and
confirmed the acoustics in the room are
bad. In addition, restroom facilities are
not handicapped accessible.
"It's not a very workable situation.
Beautiful building, but it's not fit for
County Board meetings," Tennies said.
Schoemann cited other restored
buildings in the area in which acoustics
have been addressed.
"It's a matter of whether or not you
have an interest in doing this. I don't
think we should waste time on this if
you don't want to do it. However, I will
remind you we are spending $300,000 a
year on this facility and there's certainly a debate as to what this investment looks like," Schoemann said.
McCune said "we all agree it's a
beautiful building, that's the consensus

there -- no one wants to get rid of it."

He suggested having the public provide
ideas on how the building could be
used while maintaining its historical
identity.
Separation agreement supported
The Executive Committee supported
a potential separation agreement with
County Attorney Kim Nass.
The committee met in closed session for more than an hour Nov. 15 to
discuss the matter.
The committee supported a motion
to support the decision by County
Administrator Joshua Schoemann to
enter into a separation agreement with
Nass and to direct Schoemann to provide a summary report to the County
Board at the Dec. 2016 meeting in
closed session.
The motion was supported without
discussion in open session.

Who can you protect this flu season?

Flu season is already upon us, and the Wisconsin
Department of Health Services (DHS) is asking everyone
to consider who you can protect by getting a flu shot
this year.
"When someone gets their flu shot theyre not only
protecting themselves, but also their family, friends,
and co-workers from serious illness," said State Health
Officer Karen McKeown. "There have already been a
number of reported cases of influenza in Wisconsin
including some hospitalizations, which underscores the
importance of going in early to get your flu shot."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Protection (CDC), flu vaccines are among the safest
medical products available, and they have been protecting people from illness for 50 years. Health officials recommend flu shots for people 6 months old and older,
and they are especially important for people ages 65
and older, young children, pregnant women, and people
with chronic conditions such as asthma, heart disease,

or diabetes.
Earlier this year, the CDC announced the nasal mist
form of the vaccine (live attenuated influenza vaccine
or LAIV) should not be used during the 2016-17 flu season after data showed poor or relatively low effectiveness of the nasal mist from 2013 through 2016.
"We understand that the absence of the flu mist is
disappointing for many people who preferred this
option over the shot, especially for their children,"
McKeown said. "If parents are worried how their children will react to getting a shot instead of the mist, the
CDC has tips (link is external) to make shots less stressful."
The absence of the nasal mist will not impact the
availability of the flu shot, which is expected to be
plentiful and is the best way to protect against the
types of influenza virus we could see this season. While
the severity of any flu season is difficult to predict, outbreaks in other parts of the country suggest that it is

wise to get the vaccine sooner rather than later so you

are protected.
In addition to vaccinations, there are other simple
steps we all can take to avoid illness which protects
ourselves and others:
Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use
an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Cover your cough or sneeze with your upper
sleeve, and try to avoid touching your face with your
hand. If you use a tissue, throw it away after one use.
Use your own drinking cups and straws.
Avoid being exposed to people who are sick with
flu-like symptoms.
Eat nutritious meals, get plenty of rest and do not
smoke.
Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces (e.g.,
doorknobs, refrigerator handle, telephone, faucets).
If youre sick, stay home, get rest, drink plenty of
liquids, and avoid using alcohol and tobacco.
