Setting the Hydraulic Valve Bank

These procedures can be followed when setting the modular hydraulic valve bank on the top
drive. Refer to Drawing M12702.

Before starting:
1. Ensure the hydraulic pump is on and there is 2350 psi system pressure at the top
drive. This can be monitored on the Hydraulic System Pressure Gauge. If there is not
2350 psi at the top drive, refer to the troubleshooting guide in section 4C of the
manual.
2. Ensure there is zero pressure on the return lines. This can be monitored on the
Hydraulic System Return Pressure Gauge.
3. Have Test Point Gauges available. They should have a range of 0 3000 psi.
4. Have the appropriate Hydraulic Schematic available for reference. This can be found
in the Parts, Service, Data and Operating Manual. Pressure settings should always
be verified against the hydraulic schematic.
5. Use caution when setting the hydraulic valves. Manually operating a directional valve
may cause movement in the equipment. If the adjustment may take repeated or
extended operation of the directional valve, the hoses can be disconnected from the
A and B port of the valve bank and the connections plugged and capped.

Setting the valves.

Link Counterbalance
The Link Counterbalance valve stack is the only stack that has a passage from Pressure
(P) to Tank (T). This is through the relief valve. This means that an improperly set or
malfunctioning relief valve can drop the entire system pressure by diverting flow from the
pressure side to tank.
1. Install test gauge on test point 1A.
2. Turn the adjustment on the pressure reducing valve 1.1 clockwise to increase the
pressure.
3. Turn the adjustment on the relief valve 1.2 (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise
to decrease) the pressure until the gauge reads 2100 psi. Lock down the adjustment.
4. Turn the adjustment on the pressure reducing valve 1.1 counterclockwise until the
gauge reads 1700 psi. Lock down the adjustment.
5. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.

Link Tilt Circuit

The Link Tilt circuit is the only circuit that has 2 valve stacks required to control the
system. One directional valve is used for the Retract/Extend function and one directional valve is
used for the Float function. They are connected together and act as one circuit.
1. Install test gauges on test points 2A and 2B.
2. Ensure the flow control valve 2.3 is not closed. Turn the adjustments
counterclockwise to open and increase flow if necessary. If you have replaced this
valve, make sure it is installed as a meter in valve.
3. Turn the adjustment on the pressure reducing valve 2.5 clockwise to increase the
pressure.
4. Manually function directional valve 2.1 to A position (extend). Adjust pressure relief
valve 2.6A to 1325 psi (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease). Lock
down the adjustment.
5. Turn the adjustment on the pressure reducing valve 2.5 counterclockwise until the
gauge reads 1200 psi. Lock down the adjustment.
6. Manually function directional valve 2.1 to B position (retract). Adjust pressure relief
valve 2.6B to 2750 psi (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease). This
can only be done if the pumps are turned up to 2750 psi. A close approximation
would be to set the relief valve to 2350 psi and turn the adjustment a half turn more.
Lock down the adjustment.
7. The counterbalance valve 2.4 can only be set by connecting a pressure source to the
A or B port and feeding back through the circuit. This is generally not practical in the
field. If it is necessary, adjust the valve to 2500 psi (counterclockwise to increase,
clockwise to decrease). Note: This is opposite to most valves. Lock down the
adjustment.
8. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.
Back-Up Wrench Positioning
1. Install test gauges on test points 3A and 3B.
2. Ensure the flow control valve 3.3 is not closed. Turn the adjustments
counterclockwise to open and increase flow if necessary. If you have replaced this
valve, make sure it is installed as a meter in valve.
3. Manually function directional valve 3.1 to A position (extend). Adjust pressure relief
valve 3.2A to 1000 psi (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease). Lock
down the adjustment.
4. Manually function directional valve 3.1 to B position (retract). Adjust pressure relief
valve 3.2B to 1200 psi (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease). Lock
down the adjustment.

5. Adjust the flow control valve 3.3 as required. Turn the adjustments counterclockwise
to open and increase flow or counterclockwise to decrease flow. Lock down the
adjustment.
6. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.
Back-Up Wrench Gripper
1. Install test gauge on test point 4A.
2. Turn the adjustment on the pressure reducing valve 4.2 (clockwise to increase,
counterclockwise to decrease) until the gauge reads 1800 psi. Lock down the
adjustment.
3. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.
Handler Rotate
1. Install test gauge on test point 5A.
2. Ensure the flow control valve 5.2 is not closed. Turn the adjustments
counterclockwise to open and increase flow if necessary. If you have replaced this
valve, make sure it is installed as a meter in valve.
3. Manually function directional valve 5.1 to A position. Turn the adjustment on the
pressure reducing valve 5.3 (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease)
until the gauge reads 1150 psi (for lock pin style) or 1800 psi (for lock dog style).
Lock down the adjustment.
4. Adjust the flow control valve 5.2 as required. Turn the adjustments counterclockwise
to open and increase flow or counterclockwise to decrease flow. Lock down the
adjustment.
5. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.
Handler Lock (Pin Style)
1. Install test gauge on test point 6A.
2. Turn the adjustment on the pressure reducing valve 6.2 (clockwise to increase,
counterclockwise to decrease) until the gauge reads 1200 psi. Lock down the
adjustment.
3. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.
Top Drive Brake
1. Install test gauge on test point 7B.
2. Manually function directional valve 7.1 to B position. Turn the adjustment on the
pressure reducing valve 7.2 (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease)
until the gauge reads 1000 psi. Lock down the adjustment.

3. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.

Torque Boost Clutch
1. Install test gauge on test point 8A.
2. Manually function directional valve 8.1 to A position. Turn the adjustment on the
pressure reducing valve 8.2 (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease)
until the gauge reads 500 psi. Lock down the adjustment.
3. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.
Torque Boost Rotate
6. Install test gauges on test points 9A and 9B.
7. The torque boost must be stalled to set the relief valves. This can be done by:
Closing the gripper on the quill. Ensure the handler is locked.
-orDisconnecting the hoses from A and B and capping the valve bank fittings.
8. Manually function directional valve 9.1 to A position (make-up). Adjust pressure relief
valve 9.2A to Make-Up pressure shown on Chart 1 (clockwise to increase,
counterclockwise to decrease). Lock down the adjustment.
9. Manually function directional valve 9.1 to B position (break-out). Adjust pressure relief
valve 9.2B to Break-Out pressure shown on Chart 1 (clockwise to increase,
counterclockwise to decrease). Lock down the adjustment.
10. Remove test gauge and install cap on the test point.
