magazine we pride ourselves on
reflecting current design trends
in both classic and contemporary
kitchens. Over the years weve
been lucky enough to take a look around some
fabulous readers kitchens and as this is our 50th
issue it seems only right that we should take a
look back at some of these stunning designs.
While we cant feature them all, these are a few
that have stood out either for being reflective of

their time or just simply an example of excellent

craftsmanship and creativity.
The kitchen has come a long way since our
first few issues, with advances in technology,
appliances, storage, materials and, of course, styles
from in-frame designs to pared-back handleless.
Weve seen changes from the classic country
oak kitchen to cream handpainted and the use
of walnut, through to specialist paint, high gloss
and matt finishes.
The kitchen has developed from a purely

functional room, hidden away to the centre

of our homes and so we want it not only to
function well but to look great.
Each kitchen is ultimately a reflection of the
homeowners personal taste whether informal
and relaxing or more grand in style, subdued
colours or a strong statement. Since the first
issue Irish Kitchens has reflected different
projects, classic and contemporary, upcoming
trends and innovations and the only thing that
is sure is that things will continue to evolve.

The home: A detached home in Newry

Who lives here? Brenda, Peter and their
two sons

hen Brenda and Peter moved

into their home the kitchen
was one of the first rooms
they renovated. Now, nearly
20 years on it was ready for a
facelift. A very small extension was added but
inside the renovation work was extensive. Walls
were knocked through and internal doors were
moved. In its entirety the project took about
six months and during this time the family
relocated the existing kitchen downstairs into
the basement garage.
Commenting on the work Brenda said:
Peters father built this house about 45 years
ago so we did some work when we first moved
in but were ready for a change.
Our sons are 18 and 19 so in effect weve
four adults living in the house. The kitchen is
probably the main room that we all use so we
really wanted to do something special with it.
Working with Robinson Interiors and

Michael Grant the couple
chose a classic style kitchen
with plenty of visual hooks
and design features.

Lighting was another important factor in the room and in

addition to recessed ceiling lighting Brenda chose two intricate
chrome and glass pendant lights to hang above the island
and a Venetian wood dome to sit over the dining table.

THE DESIGNER

The client wanted a design that would sit
elegantly in the room and make full use of
the available space. They wanted to keep
their Aga so that had to be factored into
the plan as did the large fridge-freezer and
wine cooler. The mirrored splashback works
well on both a social level and to reflect
light back into the room. Also on the clients
wish list was the walk-in corner pantry and
the challenge with this was ensuring it sat
seamlessly with the rest of the cabinetry.

designer Michael Grant the couple chose a

classic style kitchen with plenty of visual hooks
and design features.
The extension meant they were able to add
an entire wall of bi-folding doors which mean
that, not only can the whole area be opened up
in the good weather, but that the room basks
in natural light meaning Brenda had plenty of
options when it came to selecting the colour
scheme.
She said: While we wanted plenty of modern
features and conveniences I wanted the overall
look to be quite traditional, nothing else in the
house is contemporary so it had to sit with what
was already there.
Colourwise I wanted something that would
be easy to live with for a long time but would
look very stylish.
The kitchen effectively sits in the corner of
the open plan room and focal points include the
large island with prep. sink and incorporated
breakfast bar, the antique mirror splashback
behind the hob and the bespoke overmantel.
The walk-in corner larder is deceptive from
the outside and neatly stores most of the
familys dried goods, making the full use of the

space while the floor-to-ceiling cabinetry is not

only practical but helps to make the kitchen
appear larger.
The couple didnt want to compromise when
it came to appliances and in addition to keeping
their Aga they knew they wanted a large fridge
and freezer. During the design process Peter
then realised he also wanted a wine cooler
which Michael was able to work into the plan.
Lighting was another important factor in
the room and in addition to recessed ceiling
lighting Brenda chose two intricate chrome and
glass pendant lights to hang above the island
and a Venetian wood dome to sit over the
dining table.
The lights are a real talking point in the
room, commented Brenda. I think they go
really well with the design and add in a little
interest.
The island is probably Brendas favourite
feature in the room as it takes in the views of
the surrounding countryside and Dundalk Bay.
I love that I have something to look out to
while Im preparing dinner, she said. Its also
great when we have guests round as I dont feel
like Im missing out.

The home: A new build in Co. Meath

Who lives here? Elaine, Mick and their
five children

hen Elaine and Mick were

building their new home they
knew the kitchen was to be of
prime importance. With five
children ranging between
the ages of 8 and 16 theirs is a busy household
and from the making of packed lunches to the
preparing of dinners the kitchen is a room
under constant pressure.
Elaine used her previous kitchen as a guide
for what she wanted from the new scheme.
I made a mental checklist of what I liked about
the old kitchen and what worked well and also
what its shortcomings were, she said. This was
the basis for the new kitchen. We use our kitchen
so much that while, of course, we wanted it to
look good it also had to be highly practical.
With a rough plan in mind Elaine then began
her research into choosing a kitchen designer.
I went down the normal route of going
through magazines to see what caught my eye.

There is always
someone in the
kitchen and meal
times can be
chaotic so it was
imperative that the
room functioned
well and had a
great flow.
I kept being drawn to designs from Shalford
Interiors and although I visited with a few other
companies when I met with Ferghal and looked
around the showroom at Shalford I knew that
was what I was after.
The couple wanted a large island with seating
space for everyone and loads of worktop room.
Storage was a big factor that was lacking
in our previous kitchen so I was determined
that this time around wed be able to keep the
worktops clear, Elaine said.
There is always someone in the kitchen and
meal times can be chaotic so it was imperative that
the room functioned well and had a great flow.
Thanks to the kitchens larder and walk-in
pantry there is now a place for everything and
the worktops are free for food preparation.
Initially Elaine liked the idea of a bold colour
scheme and toyed with the idea of blue before
eventually settling on a more muted scheme.
I was worried Id get bored of a strong colour
and was also aware of trying to create continuity
between the different rooms. I thought by
staying more neutral it would help to give the
entire downstairs area a better sense of balance.
To help add continuity to the home, Ferghal
also designed the utility and boot room, areas
which work well to keep the kitchen tidy and
clutter free. A hidden walk-in pantry stores the
microwave and a small second fridge and sits
neatly within the cabinetry.
Elaine said: On one side of the freezer we
have our larder unit and on the other is the walkin pantry. People are always surprised when the

THE DESIGNER
Ferghal OReilly
Regardless of the size of a kitchen
functionality has to be the primary
concern. With seven people in the house
this had to be a big kitchen but it also
had to be convenient and easy to use.
A clear working triangle makes meal
preparation and clearing up easy while
leaving a large portion of the room free
for other family members or guests.
The client was keen to have ample
storage so we included plenty of presses in
the design, meaning that while everything
has its place it is also easy to locate
and retrieve a particular item. The larder
unit is perfect for food storage while the
hidden pantry holds any overflow without
compromising the rooms clean aesthetic.

door opens up and the space is revealed as

from the outside it looks so compact.
Ferghal really took on board what we were
telling him about what we needed from the
kitchen, its unbelievable how much easier
things are when theres ample storage space.
Ferghals design allowed for the inclusion of a
window seat and means that there is no wasted
space in the room while the inclusion of an extra
sink in the island makes food preparation a breeze.
The islands unusual shape with its curved
worktop makes it a great social space as rather than
sitting in line the family are able to easily interact

with one another during casual meal times.

It also means that when the couple are
entertaining there is plenty of room for guests
in the kitchen without interfering with the main
working triangle.
The finished kitchen is sophisticated and
tranquil yet extremely hardworking. Elaine said:
Ferghal did a fantastic job at designing a
kitchen that can easily hold seven people but is
also convenient and a delight to use. Although
the room is spacious I never feel like Im having
to walk around it to get what I need - everything
is close at hand.

atherine and Paraic wanted a

traditional style kitchen with a
modern twist. Although large
in size the rooms square shape
meant they needed a designer
with the vision to make full use of the available
space and to work within the dimensions.
Greenhill and designer Peter came highly
recommended by several friends and from their
initial consultation the couple were impressed
with Peters ideas for the project.
The fact that we werent 100% sure what we
wanted meant it was even more important that
we worked with a designer we felt we could
completely trust, said Catherine. Peter was
great at asking us questions and helping us to

figure out what it was we were looking for.

The couple knew they wanted an island in
the room but were slightly restricted because
of the width of the room. Peters plan allowed
for a unit that would house the oven, storage
and have a seating area. The overhang in the
curved island top adds in detail without being
fussy and is mirrored in the rounded edges on
the worktops.
Nothing was a problem for Peter, said
Catherine. We didnt have to compromise
on any of the ideas and rather than just giving
us the most basic option everything was well
thought out and creative.
The kitchens Aga sits directly opposite the
island and by centralising these main focal

The size and shape of this kitchen
meant that creating a sense of balance
was crucial. It was important that, while
adding in detail and interest, we kept
the room as open and light as possible.
Staggering the heights of the overmantel,
wall units, larder, fridge and freezer help
to draw the eye up rather than just across
and work well with the vaulted ceiling.

points Peter has brought a sense of balance to

the scheme while keeping the open appeal of
the room.
The choice of a mirrored splashback behind
the Aga means that even when one person is
cooking they can still easily maintain eye contact
and carry on a conversation with whoever is
sitting at the island.
Running the overmantel and wall units at
different heights stops the cabinetry from
looking too solid and helps to keep the light
ambience of the room. Similarly the fridge and
freezer sit either side of the double door pantry
and balance its raised height.
A lot of thought went into the kitchens
colour scheme. On the one hand the couple
wanted to keep it quite simple as there was
already a lot going on but knew they would
need a shade that was in keeping with the

are warm and welcoming.
Peter suggested the pale wooden floor to
bring warmth to the space and tie in with the
high vaulted ceiling and worktops.
Catherine commented: When we were
designing the kitchen we knew it had to really
stand the test of time so we were cautious when
it came to selecting the colours. We wanted
something neutral but it also had to blend
everything together.
Storage was an important factor in the
kitchen so Peter worked plenty of presses into
the scheme for added convenience and to help
keep the worktops clear.
Were delighted with the kitchen, said
Catherine. This is where we spend most of
our time and I love that while its great for
entertaining it still feels really homely when its
just the two of us.

ituated in rural Co. Tipperary this

solid ash in-frame kitchen from
OnCraft Interiors sits proudly in the
centre of this magnificent country
residence.
The owners wanted a kitchen that would be
functional, efficient and designed with busy
family life in mind. Designer Kevin devised a
plan that would keep all the practicality and
beauty of a traditional kitchen while enjoying
modern amenities and style.
The homeowner commented: Given the
location and style of the house we knew that a
very contemporary kitchen would look out of
place but we didnt want anything too fussy or
ornate. We loved Kevins scheme because while
it was classic in essence it also looked very sleek
and sophisticated. The clean lines and simplicity
mean well never get bored of it.
The reconditioned Aga takes centre stage in
this open plan living space, with hob positioned
centrally on the island with bulkhead and
recessed ceiling extraction overhead adding to
the design and mood of the this space, allowing
modern to seamlessly meet traditional.
The island with its size and design works as a
social hub for the busy family and the downdraft
extractor works to keep the cooking zone clear
without interfering with the rooms aesthetic.
To fit the familys needs the kitchen was
designed with huge amounts of storage
space with tall, bespoke units and cabinets.
In addition to providing clever storage, units
such as the large larder work to create a nice
link between the kitchen and living room areas
by continuing the style of bespoke cabinetry in
complementing colours throughout.

The traditional Shaker style doors are set into

a frame and finished with Queen Anne reeded,
beehive style knobs. The modern appliances
blend with the large Aga that is beautifully
framed by the bespoke mantle, again fusing the
classic and contemporary.
The captivating design benefits from a wall
of natural light which hugely complements
the Farrow & Ball Lime White on the kitchen
cabinetry with a darker shade of Colortrend
Historic range Tobacco Plant on the large island
with a contrasting colour of the Dekton worktop.
The kitchen table and chairs had been a huge

to suit the new space and painted the table

legs and chairs to match the new colours of
the kitchen and then restored the solid wood
top to its former glory. It now remains a central
feature of this new extension to a beautiful
family home.
We spend a lot of time at home, commented
the owner. But prior to having the extension
work done it never really felt like we made full use
of the space. Wed all end up in different rooms
and entertaining was difficult. Having the open
plan kitchen and living space has really increased
our enjoyment factor. It feels like its opened up
the entire downstairs and were able to spend
much more time together.

their 1960s home they
knew it needed renovating
but were keen to maintain
the original character of the
house. Adding an extension gave them the
space they needed to build a contemporary
open plan kitchen and living area.
On their architects advice they met with the
team at Interior 360 to discuss the plan for the
kitchen. Working with designer Philip they chose
a handleless scheme from the next125 Collection
in a truffle matt lacquer with walnut veneer.
Commenting on the room Karen said: It was
quite an awkward space to work with as its thin
and long. Looking at it we really werent sure
what we wanted or what would look best.
Philip was great at advising us and making
suggestions. He seemed to have a real vision for
the project so we were happy just to give him
free rein.
A utility room now sits on the footprint
of the old kitchen and means that the main
kitchen only needs to hold everyday essentials.
This space saving move meant the couple
didnt need to compromise when it came to
appliances and finishes in the kitchen.

The client wanted something simple but
striking for this extension project. As space
was limited every single aspect of the
design had to be completely functional. The
choice of handleless kitchen was ideal as
its clean lines help to keep the open feel
of the room and draw the eye across the
space. By centralising the ovens and coffee
station on a standalone unit no worktop
space is wasted and it also works very well
as a social space with the neighbouring
breakfast bar incorporated into the island.

Karen said: About halfway through the design

process Neil decided he really wanted a coffee
station. I thought there was no way there would
be room for it but, as with everything else,
Interior 360 found a way to make it happen.
The orange splashback is a nod to the homes
60s heritage while looking fresh and modern
in the new scheme. Taking inspiration from this
they designed a wine bottle rack and used the
same vibrant shade as its backdrop.
He really though outside the box, said Karen.
He has an amazing eye for detail and we really
appreciated his input. We loved the idea of the
orange splashback and it was their idea to add the
aluminium hanging rail. At first I wasnt sure but in
retrospect it was absolutely the right move. It stops
it from looking too full on and also is very handy as
it keeps the worktops and sink area clear.
The hard working island houses a wine chiller,

counter space, induction hob and breakfast bar

and is neighboured by the kitchens ovens and
coffee machine.
Centralising these essentials gives the room
a sense of balance and establishes it as a very
social area. It was on Philips suggestion that the
couple went for a long, slimline hob and this
works to elongate the space.
During the day the room benefits from an
abundance of natural light and at night recessed
lighting adds to the overall ambience.
In the kitchen itself I just needed enough
storage space for our everyday cooking and
dining. I was happy for everything else to go in
the utility room, commented Karen.
I love that our kitchen is that little bit
different from the norm. Its so warm and bright
looking and is contemporary while in keeping
with the style of the house.

Leona and Sean changed
their mind several times.
They originally had it in their
head that they would like something quite
contemporary with straight lines and high gloss
worktops. After visiting Jonathan Williams and
seeing some of the designs in their showroom
they then did a 360 degree turn and decided a
classic style scheme with gently curved corners
would make the most of the space and be better
suited to their period home.
Leona explained: We initially thought that
we wanted something modern to contrast the
interior and exterior of the house but then
when we visited Jonathan Williams we were
really drawn to the beautiful handcrafted
furniture. We met with Johnny and he came
up with a plan that incorporated everything
we wanted and really balanced out the room.
Now when I look at it I cant believe we even
contemplated anything contemporary!

kitchen with a large central island the family

have a sophisticated kitchen that is very much
the hub of their home.
Were never out of the open plan area, said
Leona. Its where visitors gather and all the
conversations happen.
Deep presses in island storage and a double
door pantry mean there is ample storage space
in the kitchen for the large family with all areas
being used to their full potential.
We love to cook and bake and the island
is brilliant because theres just so much
counter space, said Leona. I also really
love the closeness of the island to the hob.
Its little things like that, that make so much
difference.
Key focal points include the curved
overmantel and integrated wine rack and
drawing the wooden touches through the
kitchen from the stairs, floor and window sills
helps to give a unity to the whole house.
From the dovetail solid oak drawers to the

of flow. I love that its in keeping with the period

of the house but yet is so functional and feels
completely bespoke to us.
Johnny also made suggestions when it came
to the appliances. The stainless-steel of the
ovens and American-style fridge-freezer helps
to balance the pale cabinetry and dashes of oak,
as does the darker door handles.
Leona wasnt completely certain on their
choice of hob but is now glad she decided to
trust Johnnys judgement. She said: I had my
reservations about the induction hob at first,
said Leona. Ive always cooked with gas but I
could see that sleekness of the induction hob
would work much better visually in the kitchen.
Its really exceeded my expectations and I
love how easy it is to clean.
The whole family are delighted with the
new kitchen and credit the team at Jonathan
Williams for their work.
This was a big deal for us, Leona said. We
had so much work to do to the house that it
could have been a very stressful time but Johnny
and Will understood that and were so patient at
listening to what we wanted and taking the time
to reassure any concerns. They also worked
around us and within their time scale.

The home: A dormer bungalow in

Kilpeddar, Co. Wicklow
Who lives here? Eileen and John

fter twenty years in their house

Eileen and John were ready for a
change. Initially they planned to
just renovate the kitchen area in
their open plan space but when
they began looking around they then made the
decision to do the whole kitchen, dining and
living area.
While no big structural changes were needed
they did play around with the layout of the
kitchen so that were there had once been a
breakfast bar there was now space for an island
and the room had a more logical flow.
Eileen did a lot of research when it came to
choosing a kitchen style and had her heart set
on a Hamptons style room with clean lines and
a very open feel.
The couple met with several design
companies and were dismayed when they
were advised that the plan they had envisaged
wouldnt work within the space of the room.
Eileen explained: We were disappointed but
felt that obviously the experts must know best.
I was actually on the verge of signing a contract
with one company when I just happened to visit
Kitchen and Bedroom Perfect on an off-chance.
I had my plan in my bag and when I sat
down to talk with the designer Eleanor for
the first time I felt like someone was actually
listening to what it was I wanted. She took the
time to go through everything and between us
we tweaked it so that it was exactly right and

THE DESIGNER
Eleanor Clarke
When Eileen first came into the showroom
she was a little disheartened and deflated
from her experience thus far. By taking the
reins of the design and talking to Eileen I
was able to come up with a kitchen design
that I knew would go beyond Eileen and
Johns expections. Creating a Hamptons
style to the kitchen gave the space a
warm, fresh and most importantly classy
feeling. The subtle colours of Mussel
and Cashmere of the solid kitchen doors
add to the sense of peace within the
kitchen. Surrounding the tall units in stud
and playing with the heights of the wall
units allowed both the contemporary and
traditional styles to collide. A bespoke
internal design to the larder unit created a
feature within, providing both storage and
service. The central island is illuminated
by under and over counter lighting
giving the perfect finishing touch.

ticked all the boxes on our wish list.

Eleanor suggested raising the heights of the
higher units in order to really make the most
of the space and as the hob is the first thing
that catches your eye when you enter the room
from the hallway she put a feature cupboard
above it with glass fronted units on either side.
On Eleanors suggestion the couple also had
a false wall fitted and integrated the kitchens
ovens and storage into the space.
Colourwise Eileen and John wanted a very
natural scheme with the pale cabinetry, warm
wooden floor and stone feature wall in the living
area all perfectly complementing each other.
Eileen explained: We needed this area to
tie-in with the rest of the house and I think a
neutral colour scheme is better suited to this
style of kitchen.
Eleanor actually blended two different
shades together for the island and units, its very
subtle but adds a bit of depth to the scheme.
Pops of colour have been introduced into
the room via potted plants and carefully
selected ornaments.
As the couple entertain a lot they wanted an

78

island with adequate seating space and a view into

the main cooking area as well as the living room.
It was important that the new design included
room for the fridge as it had previously been
in the utility room so Eleanor incorporated it
into the scheme and by placing it in the corner
has ensured it always has a clear passageway for
ease of access.
The couple had a very clear idea in mind of
what they wanted when it came to lighting.
They wanted bright task lighting and also mood
lighting for the evenings. Working with Kitchen
and Bedroom Perfects project manager Donal
they worked feature lighting through the room
with pendant lights above the island, backlit
units and lighting under the lower cabinetry.
Eileen said: We really appreciated everything
the team at KBP did for us. Weve got exactly
the kitchen we wanted and at a price that was
within our budget. Eleanor was fantastic at
keeping us on track and we had absolute trust
in everyone. The tradesmen worked around me
and when they were finished for the day youd
hardly know theyd been there.
I wouldnt hesitate to recommend them.

hen Fabienne and Robbie

moved into their house late
last year they were keen to
put their own stamp on the
property.
While the decor was fairly current it wasnt
quite to their taste so they set about revamping
the interior room by room.
The kitchen was very much of its time so they
wanted something much more contemporary
with clean lines and a bright, airy feel.
As there is quite a lot of wood running
through the house via the floor and window
sills they wanted to contrast this with something
clean and light.
Fabienne spent a good bit of time researching
exactly what she wanted and was inspired by
kitchen trends not only in Ireland but also in
her native France. When she discovered The
Kitchen Shop she loved that fact that all their
kitchens were custom made.
She explained: The fact that everything
was bespoke and handmade was a big appeal
as I had quite a clear plan in mind and wanted
something unique to us.
When we visited the showroom I was further
impressed and then when we met with Peter I
just really liked his whole approach.
Fabienne chose a dual colour scheme of blue/
grey and white for the cabinetry and contrasted
it with a deeper tone to frame the room.

I loved that The Kitchen Shop offered
custom made colours so were able to get exactly
the shade we wanted, commented Fabienne.
I work in design so Im around colour a lot
and had a clear vision of how I wanted it to
look. I wanted the two tone scheme to bring
movement and interest into the room.
In accordance with Fabiennes wishes the
sink and hob have been placed at adjacent ends
of the counter, giving an unbroken workspace.
I love cooking for people and quite often
when Ive family round theyll pitch in and help.
I wanted lots of space so that there was room
for everyone. It wouldnt work for everyone but
its very functional for our way of life and how
we use the kitchen.
Storage was another important factor so Peter
worked in the higher cabinets and incorporated
pullout drawers into the presses and larder unit
for ease of access.
Also on the wish list was a coffee station
so rather than interrupt the clean lines of the
main kitchen Peter suggested a floating island
unit to sit in the open plan area. This not only
saves space in the kitchen but helps to marry
the kitchen and living areas together. The same
blue wood stain was then used on the floating
shelves that sit opposite to give continuity to
the scheme.
We absolutely love the kitchen, said
Fabienne. Its so vibrant but also feels very
calming. We spend a lot of time here and love
how its so functional while looking great.

hen it came to renovating

their new home Emma and
John wanted to go for a
clean, contemporary look
throughout. The shape of the
kitchen was dictated by the positioning of the
stairs but working with Keith and the team from
Roundwood they were able to use this to their
advantage and create a striking, design-led kitchen.
The couple wanted something very clean
and fresh looking and so selected a bi-colour

Emma said: We had a very rough idea of how
we wanted the kitchen to look but we relied
heavily on Keith for his input. Roundwood had
done work on Johns parents kitchen so we knew
we could trust them to do a brilliant job and were
happy enough to let them take the lead.
Clean lines and an open appeal were the
main factors on the design brief.
We wanted something very modern with
everything integrated. Its not a massive
space so we didnt want anything too fussy,
commented Emma.
By working the oven, fridge-freezer and

ensured that not an inch of space was wasted.
Despite its simplicity the scheme is full of

either side of the window sill and is perfect

as a display area. Another shelf sits above the
induction hob, just below the higher cabinetry
and adds a bolt of colour.
Explaining the colour scheme Emma said:
We knew we wanted to go for a colour rather
than a neutral shade. I think as this is a smaller
room it needed that bit of vibrancy to make
it stand out. Keith was great at showing us
different colour palettes and we kept being
drawn to the blue tones.
I love it and think it has an impact on the whole
house as it makes everything look very current.
We also liked the fact that as its hand
painted it can be easily changed at some point
down the line if we want something different.
The U-shape of the kitchen is ideal for a more
compact room as it means there is still plenty of
counter space and one side of the worktop can
double up as a breakfast bar.
With the dining table sitting adjacent to the
kitchen the room is the ideal entertaining space
as conversations can be easily continued while
one person is in the kitchen.
The integrated Liebherr fridge-freezer and
Neff dishwasher keep the clean aesthetic of the
room and the quartz worktop is easy to clean
and maintain.
It takes very little effort to keep the room
looking well, said Emma. I was initially worried
that the brighter white would be hard to keep
clean but in fact its quite the opposite, a quick
wipe around and the whole room is gleaming.

As this was a large, well thought out space
Mary and Norman wanted a kitchen that was

Mary commented: We wanted something that

the popular styles that are around at the minute.
We wanted it to be elegant without being

process meant he was able to put a plan in

place that extended beyond just the kitchen
and allowed him to create complementary
architectural and design features throughout
the property.
Working with the couple over a two year
period every idea was carefully considered and
developed with the client in mind.
Working to the full proportions of the room
Darren designed a scheme featuring the
warmth of oak, soft paint finishes and warm
light helping to create a cosy and welcoming
atmosphere.
30mm thick in-framed tulipwood doors
were hand painted to create a timeless look
while curved solid oak doors with burr accents
punctuate the design, with the cornice and
book matched veneered panel to the front of
the island providing continuity.
The island acts as a social interface providing the
opportunity for social interaction and its shape,
scale and position help to create a subtle spatial
boundary allowing the architectural proportions
to appear reduced and the functionality of the
entire space to become defined.
The bow shaped island curves away from
the complementary curved cabinetry along the
back wall and out towards the open plan room
with two solid oak in-framed cylindrical units
defining each side of the island.
The soft geometry creates a welcoming
flow throughout the space with the burr oak,
pronounced plinth and elevated appearance
of the cylindrical units creating strong visual
hooks along multiple entry point sight lines.
These visual hooks draw the onlooker into the
kitchen encouraging social loitering and human
interaction.
The front of the island is bridged with an
elevated section which helps to shield functional
processes from view; the introduction of an
illuminated panel of book matched oak veneer
and casual seating encourages the colours
and textures of the kitchen to melt into each
other with adjustable lighting adding an holistic
element to the design.
The quality of this kitchen is emphasised
by the inclusion of a full height curved pantry
larder complete with slide away pocket doors,
sensor activated lighting and full height
revolving storage.
The inclusion of a ceiling well, up-lighting and
plaster ceiling coving punctuates the expansive
ceiling giving the kitchen focus and helping to
emphasise the stature of this design.

With only an embryonic architectural
plan as a guide the brief spilled out far
beyond the kitchen furniture allowing us to
create complementary architectural and
design features throughout the property
with every minute detail being developed
and evolved with the clients over a
two year period. This was no ordinary
project; this was a labour of love.

The home: A semi-detached three bedroom house in Wicklow

Who lives here?: Lisa, Chris and their three children

isa and Chris kitchen is testament to

the impact that good planning can
have on a project. After ten years in
their home they wanted a change.
Rather than moving house they made
the decision to add an extension on and with
the exception of the front living room they
completely remodelled the entire downstairs.
Lisa is still reeling from the difference the
extra space has made, she said: Its such a
huge change to the house. In all honesty its
changed our lives. Its incredible what having a
bit more space can do.
The couple had a fairly good idea of what they
wanted for their kitchen and utility room and
visited several kitchen designers in their local
area. They had almost settled on a company but
when they met their builder he recommended
they pay Cherrymore a visit.
Lisa said:
Our builder, Declan from Shorycon had

104

THE BEST OF IRISH KITCHENS

worked with Cherrymore in the past and he

actually took us to see homes he had done that
had used Cherrymore.
I loved them instantly. It was a beautiful
quality of work at great value.
Although they are based in Wicklow Lisa and
Chris were so impressed that they decided to make
the journey to Donegal to visit the showroom and
meet with Hugh McGinty, the designer.
We went up to Donegal and met with
Huey. We knew what we wanted and had a few
rough drawings. We liked him straightaway and
because we had seen three examples of his
work in real homes we had complete trust and
confidence in him.
This was the only time the couple actually
met Hugh during the project but because they
had a good idea of what they wanted and had
faith in Cherrymore it wasnt stressful.
Between Huey and Declan we knew we were
in good hands and were very relaxed during the

entire process, Lisa said.

Huey was so easy to work with, we met him
once to choose doors and give him a rough
design. Everything else had to be done remotely
via phone and email and his communication
was just incredible. Whatever we had seen
before from other designers he just took it to
the next level to give us what we wanted.
Lisa had previously had a wooden Shaker
style kitchen so this time around she wanted
something neutral where they would be free to
add pops of colour and statement accessories
like the large glass chandelier.
High ceilings and the large feature window
give the room a sense of space and light and fully
integrated appliances mean the appearance is
neat and streamlined.
As Lisa works from home Cherrymore fitted
an office area into the room which means she
isnt shut away and can keep an eye on the kids.
The office nook is great, previously I had a

bureau in the dining room but it meant I had

to pack everything away at the end of the day.
Now the kids can be sat having lunch or doing
homeworks and I can just work away.
Cherrymore also fitted a storage unit in the
hallway for the family to put their shoes and
coats. This helps with the flow and continuity
of the home but Hugh used slightly different
handles in the kitchen, hall and utility room to
mark out the different living areas and to avoid
the effect being overly repetitive.
Originally Lisa hadnt planned for a pantry
but this changed when she saw one in the
Cherrymore showroom.
The style I saw was completely different to
the scheme we were going for but they adjusted
it to suit our design. Id be lost without it now.
Everything in the kitchen has a multifunctional
purpose, including the island with its pull up
electric sockets and USB point.
Although they kept their front living room Lisa
admits it has now become slightly redundant.
We all love the kitchen so much, we call it the
big room were never out of it. The living room
is now only used as a little cinema room if we have
guests or the kids have friends round.

THE DESIGNER
Hugh McGinty
Although I only met Lisa and Chris once
during the whole process we kept in
contact throughout. Lisa gave me some
idea of what she wanted and was happy to
hear any suggestions I might have. As Lisa
works from home we incorporated an office
space into the layout and worked around
keeping the scheme bright and open.
Lisa had seen a pantry in our showroom
and liked the idea of it so we came up with
a style that would suit the room and fitted a
storage unit in the hall with the effect being
that people would get a feel for the kitchen
before they even entered the room, giving a
continuity to the downstairs of the home.

The home: A recently extended property

in Newtownabbey
Who lives here? Julie and Martin

ulie and Martin had put up with their

kitchen and its limited space for more
than two decades. Over the last few
years they had grown more and more
frustrated with it and felt unable to use
it to full advantage.
Julie explained: The layout of the kitchen
meant there wasnt the room for us both to be
in the kitchen at the same time. It had got to the
stage where I wasnt enjoying cooking anymore
as Id end up getting frustrated by the lack of
counter space.
It also felt more like it was just a hallway to
the back garden rather than a living space.
They planned an extension that would give
them more floor space and positioned the
kitchen so it looked directly out to the garden
rather than the next door neighbours hedge.
With plans in place they then began looking
for a kitchen company that could make
maximum use of the new space. From research
they had decided they wanted a handleless
German-style kitchen as they loved the idea
of clean lines, streamline appearance and the
fact that it offered ample storage opportunities
without making the room appear smaller.
Although this then narrowed down their
search slightly the fact that they didnt know the
exact dimensions of the extension at that stage
provided some issues when they were looking
for a kitchen design company.
We knew how wide the kitchen was going
to be but we werent sure how far back it was
going to go, said Julie. Many of the companies
told us wed have to come back when we had
the finished plan.
Tom from Strmer Designs was the only one
for whom this was no problem. He was able to
give us various options for the space and having
him on board at an early stage then meant he

110

THE BEST OF IRISH KITCHENS

111

KITCHENS

was able to make suggestions to the design

to ensure the kitchen worked perfectly. And
of course the brand was everything we were
looking for aesthetic wise.
As Martin is tall they wanted the cabinetry
and worktops to sit slightly higher than average
and to make storage and finding items easier
they chose a scheme with plenty of drawers and
minimum cupboards.
With a gas hob in the previous kitchen they
were initially hesitant about moving away from
this but realised a conventional hob would sit
much better with the sleek design and Julie
hasnt been disappointed with the results.
Its so easy to keep clean and has taken very
little adjusting to.
The dual islands with incorporated breakfast
bar, feature lights and pop-up sockets mean
the kitchen is now a very social space and
entertaining is much easier. Also as Julie is a
keen craftsperson she can now not only use the
kitchen as a work space but there is also room
to store materials rather than having to keep
them upstairs.
The kitchen leads on to a new patio area
through French doors and mean that in the
better weather the couple can open this room
up and enjoy their outside space in a way they
couldnt before.
Delighted with the finished result Julie said:
Tom has planned the kitchen so I can
practically stand and empty the dishwasher
without having to move anymore than one step
to put things away.
Not only does it look fantastic but we now
have a space that we can both enjoy and actually
spend some quality time in. Our only regret is
not doing it sooner.

THE DESIGNER
Tom Coffey
Julie and Martin wanted to position the
kitchen so it interacted with their garden.
They intended French doors and a patio
area for their extension so we worked
around that and because we were involved
from an early stage it was much easier.
