Rule: Adverbs ,or adverbial phrases ,of manner ,place ,and time answer the questions How?,
Where, and When? actions take place. They are normally placed in that order after the
verb whether or not all three adverbs are used. He usually works hard (how?)at home (where?)
all the evening (when?) .Where there are two adverbs of manners, or place, or time the more
detailed of the two comes first. Example :David sometimes meets a friend for lunch in the
doorway (place I ) of the nearest caf (place2) at a quarter to one (time I) on Mondays (time
2).
A)Put the adverbs in brackets into their normal positions in the following sentences.
I They sat talking (all the evening ; contentedly ;in the garden).
2. She put the hot dish down (on the table ;when the bell went for lunch ;quickly).
3. He often plays the piano (for hours; quietly; in the evening ).
4. The competitors waited (near the finishing post; impatiently; after the race )
